Nice pics adel.
Very dark and overcast today; heres a male Cardinal.
Daily Pics Vol. 37
Wow! Cool bird. I'd have to go through about ten states to see this Northern cousin of the Loggerhead
Let's see, . . . states of nervousness, anticipation, excitement, and the others . . . ??
;-))
Actually, GA, TN, KY, IL, WI, MN, Manitoba, Nunavut . . six states, a province and a territory would get you to and beyond their range ;-)

Oh good I guessed right about the Shrike
Thought you would!
Two Red -tailed Hawks had come into a tree right behind my shed.
It didn't make any of the feeder birds leave at all; I guess their more concerned w/ Sharpies&Coopers
Yep - Buteo hawks don't have the manoeuvrability to catch songbirds at all. Their main prey is rodents, rabbits, and similar. That's why the squirrels were more worried!

Love the pics everybody!!!!
You're giving me lots of smiles adelbert! I certainly need some of those! Love the expressions on the birds faces, your captions fit well!
I have been snooping and enjoying everyone's pics. Not great weather here, some birds around but my camera has been given a Dec. 20th repair date. That at least is some sort of good news, they will repair it!
Adel your a real card, lol! Nice pics
Wonderful photos everyone!!!

Wow, look at all those snow pictures!! We have had a light sprinkling so far but nothing like the snow pics above! We usually don't get much until Jan and Feb. (and last year in April lol) It has been really cold for here though. With all the pre Christmas hoopla going on I have missed a lot of great bird pictures here!
I took a few seconds today to run for my camera on my way out this morning. I only had the short range lens on unfortunately but I wanted to send a picture of a mockingbird guarding his berry treasure trove. For berry appeal you really can't beat winterberries! The branches get loaded and the birds go crazy for them (if they can get past the "berry police" that is)
Adelbert, what kind of bird is that? Nothing like him around here.
Lily,
Very beautiful, colorful and striking! Do the deer bother the Winterberries? I'd like to grow that in my yard. What variety of Winterberry is that?
Lol, I know the 'berry police'! We have Mockingbirds that defend any and all berries from all the other birds!
Marilyn
Lovely winterberries, and great shots of the Northern Shrike too! (Good id pelle!) We get the cousin Loggerhead here in TX!
LOL adelbertcat!! Too too funny!
I had this small Sharpie looking for breakfast....:- It happened to be posing beside the Moonvines I am allowing to seed, lol. I can do better than that!!
bebop............which pic are you asking about. The ones eating peanuts are #1&2 are Western Scrub Jays #3 are both Steller's Jays and #4 is a Steller's Jay and a Spotted Towhee.

Thanks Resin!
While I'm always thrilled to see a "new" bird, I lost a tad of my enthusiasm in reading that the Northern Shrike sometimes preys on smaller songbirds. It was probably eyeballing my feeder birds when I spotted it. It was only about 40' from my suet feeders.
They do have some nasty habits otherwise their a cool looking bird!
Nice pics and commentary adel! :-)
debnes, Real nice pic of the Sharpie!
Beautiful pic w/ the winterberry Lily!
Great shots, everyone .......
Tigerlily, congratulations on your Northern Shrike sighting.
debnes, nice shot of the Sharpie. I know that the overall size, and the size of the head are distinguishing characteristics between the Cooper's and Sharpie. As times passes after taking a photo, I forget the visual size of the bird. Just looking at a photo can then be misleading (for me) as to the Hawk's size. I've got a lot of Hawk photos that have yet to be clearly identified.
For example, is this Hawk a Cooper's or is it a Sharpie ? As I recall the size, it wasn't small so I would say Cooper's. Unfortunately, the photo was taken right under my bird feeder.
.
Poor Mourning Dove.
He looks like a Sharpie to me.
Thanks Charles! It sure can be difficult. I think I have a few pics unidentified too. The one there with the unfortunate dove looks like a very large sharpie to me. We can ask Resin to make sure though.

Great photos everyone...Lily..I love that berry bush and the mocker guarding it! Makes me laugh he looks like he takes his job seriously!
Thanks for entertaining me everyone!
For example, is this Hawk a Cooper's or is it a Sharpie ? As I recall the size, it wasn't small so I would say Cooper's
Cooper's for me too - it's a big bird compared to its Mourning Dove dinner, and the legs are stout . . . not exactly 'sharp'!
Resin
Wow, lots of hawks here this morning! I'm really jealous lol!
The winterberry is either 'spakleberry' or 'winter red'. i have three planted in a triangle and I forget which is which. I have the male 'apollo' planted off to the side in one of my daylily beds as he isn't nearly as interesting but needs to be in the vacinity of the females.
Lots of great pics!
Nice pics nanny!
Very cute pic dellrose!
Thanks Pelle ;0)
