I can't see the beak well enough; maybe Resin could tell.

Sorry; looks like a House Finch to me.

Needs a pointier thinner beak to be a Pine Sisken.

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Female House Finch for me too. The males and females PS both have a little yellow on their wings. That's one I've been watching for, I think I saw one this weekend but didn't get to take a photo, darn.

My Pine Siskens aren't coming around anymore thanks to this guy and his buddies who are here everyday.
Oh well at least I had them for a while and was able to get some decent photos.

Pelle ~ that fellow is just causing you all kinds of problems. Do you think they'll hang around all winter? Is there any solution, short of taking all the feeders down for a while, to disperse the birds?

Marlton, NJ

Hi sadie, Yes I think they'll be here all winter. I thought about taking down the feeders but that might be just a very temporary fix.

The birds that come around are very aware of the Hawks and I haven't seen anyone get snatched up yet.

Yesterday the Sharpie and 2 Juncos were both on the arbor at the same time!
The Juncos were deep inside the Wisteria vines but it looked like such a strange situation as the Hawk was paying them no mind at all.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

nanny good choice the hawk pic for an opener!

Sorry they have decreased your special small birds pelle. :- I suppose they have to be very hungry or very brave to chance the hawks.. Good thing you have the wisteria for some of them to hide in.

I always love your mergansers adelbertcat!

This morning it's the usual characters here...

Thanks for the ID and link on the Common Mergansers Adel and Pelle!! I don't believe I've ever seen one!

Great pics all...I can't pick a favorite as I truly love them all!

Sharpies are a terror. We saw one once last year but never again.

Big excitement here this morning. A redpoll arrived. The question for you experts: will he eat black oil sunflower seeds? That's all we are putting out these days and he seemed a little confused at the feeder. But that may have been "jetlag".

Congratulations Behop on your new visitor and the great pic! I will be anxious to hear more about this bird...Rose

Very nice bebop Redpoll ! Here is some information that will answer your question. http://www.nps.gov/archive/gaar/Expanded/key_values/natural_resources/birds/bird_descriptions/common_redpoll.htm

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Pelle - sounds like you've got some brave little Juncos there!

Debnes - very nice pics of the Cardinal and Dove. I had 15 Cardinals at the feeders this past Saturday (male & female) that's was a sight!

Bebop - congratulations on the Redpoll, I'd love to see one here but we're in the very south end of their winter range so I doubt it but I'll have my fingers crossed :-) The Cornell site says "Frequently visits bird feeders, especially thistle feeders"

Birds are like humans at times. I assume weather conditions can alter one's behavior. This Blue Jay hasn't gotten the holiday spirit yet and is unwilling to share food with his neighbor, the peaceful Dove. Sound familiar .......

Good one Linth!

Is that a new feeder I see?

Linthicum Heights, MD(Zone 7a)

If George Foreman can have five (5) sons named George, Blue Jays can name more than one offspring Jay, also.

How do birds of the same specie tell one from the other ?

LOL Charles!!

This seems to be the only Mockingbird having claimed the territory. Comes by several times a day to my window for a few mealies. The sparrows aren't brave enough to come right up to my window.
