Hi There,
I planted a bare root weeping elm (umus glabra pendula) in mid September of this year (2007). I have watered it regularly and I gave it a hit of Seasol and it is now the beginning of December and it still has not begun to leaf out.
There were little buds on the branches when I planted it and they have not opened at all. The buds are brown and seem to have dried out. The tree seems to be still alive. There is a greenish tint to the trunk and the branches are still supple. When I broke open one of the buds there is still a green centre...
Is there still a chance for this tree or does it look like its a goner?
Thanks, Sean.
Bare root tree not leafing out
My guess is it's just a bit of transplant shock, I'd give it a little more time yet. If it's alive, it should eventuallly put out new leaves.
That would be my guess, as well. I had a wisteria that I transplanted in March of this year and did not get leaves until late July. It leafed out a little at first and then took off in August. So give your tree a little time.

Hi Sean, I know this may sound a silly question, but did you soak the roots of the tree for a couple of hours before you planted it, bare root trees and shrubs really do need hydrated before planting, I would also dig with a trowel, really close to the roots a small hole and set an upturned juice bottle into this hole, cut the base off the carton first, so that you can fill it up a few times each day to get water right down to the roots of the new tree as it could be struggling in your climate especially as it was pulled from the soil and no container full of compost to keep it alive while in transport from the grower. also add a good mulch around the root area to help keep some moisture around the roots. remember, some trees do have a rest period and dont grow for a few months each year. Good Luck. WeeNel.
