daylily roots

Berkeley, CA(Zone 9a)

I'm removing masses of well overgrown daylily clumps. The root system is massive. How much of the roots need to be removed in order to replant something else and not have them pop up?

I've never had daylilies come up from the root pieces alone. If you remove any roots that have fans of foliage attached you them should be safe.

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

the best way to propagate from the Day Lily is by lifting the whole large clump of root, shake some of the soil off and then CUT with a sharp knife all the outer bits of the tubers that show either green growth, or, they show what is called root nobs, that is little swellings that the foliage will pop through, they also are better if the have a bit of root attached as this helps the tuber take up moisture and nutrients when separated from the parent plant, then either put the new bits into pots or the garden soil will do, add some plant food like blood fish and bone-meal to the planting holes as they are hungry feeders, you can also replant the parent plant the same way, give them a good water too as they have been pulled from the ground and will dry out fast, day lily like to be in large groups to flower well, so they may take a couple of years to really get going again,
Best wishes. WeeNel.

Thanks, WeeNel. I hope Not to see them. They have crowded out so much and flop over my hillside terraces into the downward ones. They will be tossed.

You could offer them for postage in the Plant trading section or put them at the curb with a "Free" sign.
