Victor Should Write a Book

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

I can't get through all the threads I'm watching now before my bedtime! LOL
That's why I never seem to make it over to the NE Forum to check on new threads or birthdays......Imagine if I ever try to lurk on other fora!!!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I've pretty much given up other forums...

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Sometimes I forget this site is about gardening !

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I think that's 'flora', Louise! With no apostrophe.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

LOL, Victor....I can't forget all those years of Latin!! Forum, Fora! LOL

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Speaking of Latin, does anyone remember the old joke:

What's the Pope's phone number?

Et cum spirit...2 2 0

If you can pronounce it, and you get the humor, then we know how old you are ! hee hee...

I think my blood sugar is dropping...

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

You definitely need chocolate, then.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Ok - no latin lessons on the west coast - how are the numbers pronounced in latin?

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

It's a play on words...phonetically it would be: "et coom speery two two oh..."
translated from Latin would mean; "...and with your spirit "...(it was part of the Mass before they started doing it in English.)

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes - even I could figure out the first part - well, actually I haven't figured it all out 'cause I don't get the play on words. And the number 2 is not pronounce "too" in latin! What is the Latin word for 2? It's deux in French.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

It's a catholic thing...goes back two thousand years...too hard to explain !
It's an old joke from the mid 60's.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Jasper! Do you or don't you know what is Latin for "2" (this is driving me nuts - well, I'm probably half way there, anyway lol)

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

I should know this, but maybe I'm wrong. I believe the latin for "two" is "bi"...

i.e. bilingual, bicycle, bipolar, etc.

or maybe it's just a prefix....

Latin Dictionary. does this help anyone?

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

good link, Gloria. I think it depends on if you're using it as a noun, adjective, etc.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Harper, Your just thinking too hard. The latin sounds like the Enlish numbers 2-2-0

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

daves right. Now why didn't I just say that to begin with ?

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Sorry, I meant Seandor.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Gee, I don't mind be confused with Harper - that's a real compliment!
So 2-2-0 is like saying 'two' in Latin - but with a stammer?

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

2-2-0 sounds like tu tuo.

Excuse my latin, I haven't spoken it in centuries.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, you seem to be rather highly functioning for a gentleman centuries old. :-)

Greensboro, AL

tu tuo = you two

We just say y'all down here.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks gloria125! So it's "and with your spirit - you two" well, I guess it loses something in translation.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Et cum spirit tu tuo = and with your spirit (roughly)
tu tuo SOUNDS like 2-2-0

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks Dave - I finally got it. What can I say . . . I am a bit slow on Saturday nights.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Well, my grammer is lacking. ;^)

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

LOL, Dave!

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

dave...you crack me up...not having spoken latin in centuries...!!!
How's your Greek these days?

Do tell us what was going on when you were in your youth. If you don't want to divulge your age, just tell us this: Did people really not believe Columbus ?

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I hate to admit this, but I once know a fellow who was fluent in Ancient Greek - well to read it anyway - he studied classics - anyway I found it a total turnon! Which now confirms that I am wierder than you ever supposed.

And no DH does not speak or read ancient Greek and he doesn't know lol

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

we'll never tell...

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I can't wait for Victor's come back to THIS one!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I grew up in Astoria, Queens and have many Greek friends. I could put you in orbit, Michaela! Too bad I can't write it. Just saying it results in spitting all over my screen.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

toooo, tooo funny! I'm sorry - I am talking ancient Greek (don't know about modern Greek) Somehow, spitting all over the screen doesn't sound that seductive . . . . lol

Well, maybe Mrs. Victorgardener is thrilled by it :-)

Greensboro, AL

I can't write Greek but I can write Russian. My computer can't though.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

You can write Russian? How cool is that? I think you can adjust word processing softwear for other alphabets, but not sure you could cut and paste it to DG

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

So, Victor, does this Latin lesson help any in the writing of your book? Or is is just useful in mouthing off to the other inmates?

Greensboro, AL

It took 3 days to learn the cyrillic alphabet. After that Dostoyevski is a piece of cake!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - impressive, Gloria!

Greensboro, AL

Even you could do it Victor! I always wondered about the wisdom of learning a language like Russian when there were no Russians to talk to. I also took French and there were no frenchmen to talk to, just a few Canadians. But every college requires 2 foreign languages at least. Its supposed to do something positive to your brain cells I guess.
