sprouting asparagus plant

Plano, TX

my asparagus plant has sprouted tall thin reeds (stems?) shooting straight up--what are they?

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

Are these the indoor ferns or the veg type of Asparagus, if it is the indoor fern off the same name, then your plant is normal and sending out new fronds, they will open to look like very fine fern leaves, if the plant is the veg one, then cant help you, the indoor plant cant take direct sunlight or the fronds will dry up and turn brown with all the foliage dropping off, you need to mist it every other day if kept in a warm/hot central heated room, well lit situation, but not at a window to bake in sunlight through the grass, with new growth, I would give a weak liquid feed and let the compost get almost dry before watering again, depending on the temp indoors, maybe water once each week, less if the compost is still damp. hope this helps, if not, someone else will help with the other type of plant, Good Luck. Yep, WeeNel is right. Those are the new fronds. Mine is doing the same thing right now. If you have a room or area in your home that gets light, but isn't heated, that would be an ideal place to overwinter your plant. Dry, warm air is tough on these plants.

well thank you for that information! it's kind of a funny looking way to grow!

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

Once the stick looking stems reach the height they are trying to grow to, then they will send or uncurl the foliage, once it unfurles, it looks very delicate like green feathers, the feathery looking foliage will turn brown and fall off leaving you with dried sticks if you let the air get too hot and dry, so misting is a way to prevent that happening, most ferns grow the way yours is, then they unfurl there lovely foliage, good luck. Oh, so that's why I have a bunch of brown sticks in my asparagus ferns by the end of winter....lol...thanks weenel, you helped me out! I just thought it was the natural progress of the foliage....Oh, sorry to butt in!

thanks all for helping me out with the asparagus plant

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

Hi Kls, no problems, and by the way, you are supposed to but in, that's how we all learn, so dont be sorry, just go right ahead and join in whenever you feel you need to, the plant by the way is actually a fern, and it gets it's name Asparagus Fern because the foliage looks very like the Asparagus we grow as a veg to eat, but yours is part of the Liliacea Family, mostly grown as indoor plants, but you get climbers too, and brown and woody looking dead stems can be cut off right down at the base. hope this helps you out. good luck. WeeNel.
