daffodils

Irvine, CA

hi- I am forcing daffodils to grow in a basket for the holidays. When I water them, do I water directly on the bulbs, or around them?
and Question 2) can you give me some advice for planting daffodils in the ground...? light, soil, depth (the bulbs are Huge)

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

For forcing the bulbs for indoors, dont over water or you might rot the bulbs, they dont like to sit in wet soil for too long, also keep them in a dark place till you see the green foliage, then take them into the light, the foliage and flower buds will rocket in the light and warmth of the house,
For outdoor bulbs, get them in the soil soon as you can so they get a chance to acclimatize to the colder soil, get roots down and also build up energy for flowering, ALL the energy is in the bulbs as this is their little food store for that seasons flower show, soil conditions are like, good manured soil that is free draining, not soggy wet all the time, if you have wet soil, add some sand/grit to the soil to help drainage, they like good light and you can also add top mulch if you have frosts.
Planting the bulbs are as follows, dont pull your daff bulbs apart if they are 2 or 3 stuck together, you can split the large clumps up in about 2 years time as each year your bulbs will multiply themselves, all your different bulbs should be planted 3 times the size of the bulbs, so if a bulb is 2 inches from root end to growing tip, then plant them 6 inches deep, into good well rotted manure or composted soil, I always add a handful of bone-meal to the planting hole soil to give them a natural feed rather than use a chemical one as in the wild, the bulbs get nutrients from leaf-mold, dead animals etc. hope this helps you to have a wonderful show both indoors and outside in the garden, remember all different daff's will flower at different times so it all depends on the type you have as far as flower timing goes. good luck.
