A question about watering

Moline, IL(Zone 5a)

I live in ILL. zone 5a. I was wondering, with the wierd weather we have been having, if I should be watering my garden outside? Normally we would have had some freezes by now, but our temps have been between 35 to 40 degrees outside. Some of my plants have gone into remission like they should, but I actually have buds and roses on my creeping rose. My rhodie just bloomed a few weeks ago. One bloom, lol but it bloomed.

That's a good question. I just watched an episode of Gardening by the Yard this weekend and he said that unless the ground is frozen to keep watering all of your landscape plants, just do it in the morning so they have time to dry before night fall.

Sue, I had a clematis bloom this weekend. I've continued to give them water once a week until this week because we finally got rain.

I live in UK and have just removed a flower bud from one of my Rhodie too, all my garden has been either flowered it's self to death by June/July, or some things have flowered again like my Clematis, but that's gardening for you, or nature I should say, in a zone 5, I would be cutting back on the watering now as if you encourage new growth now, and a frost hits your area, all the new growth will be killed off and in turn can cause die back further into your rose shrubs/climbers, just dont prune them till early spring so that they dont suffer from frost damage on any tender growth they have put on this late unless they are too leggy and will suffer from wind damage, in some milder winters here in UK (very rarely) we can cut rosebuds at Christmas, someone told me to cut very tight rosebuds with a good stem, wrap them in tissue paper and put them into the freezer, defrost them in very cool temp and then you can display them for Christmas, but personally, I have never tried this and would not want to do it for a special occasion unless I had enough roses to try it out first. Back to your garden, I would stop watering now and let nature do the rest, you dont want your plants to fore-go their natural rest period as they may be weakened for early spring growth. Good Luck and just enjoy what you have got for now. WeeNel.

If you're going to water, water deeply and try not to splash on the roses.

keep in mind that it is cooler and you will not have the evaporation that you would if it was
a lot warmer. you have to count the dew and frost also as precip. you are in humid il not dry san antonio. currently i don't think you need to water.
