Ouch is right! Oh My!
Do You Have a Favorite Quote, Gardening or Otherwise?
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
Joyce Kilmer Oates (?)
Also there's a fave of mine by Eleanor Roosevelt around here somewhere and an Einstein that my husband has been quoting a lot recently.
OH YEAH! (this one is seasonal!) the best things in life aren't things. x, Carrie

Oh yes, Carrie! I remember that one!
It's always been a favorite of mine.
Also ... 'Common sense isn't!'
How about a little Mark Twain for "local" color?
Thunder is good, thunder is impressive; but it is lightning that does the work.
Absolutely!
also twain i think:
there are lies
d****d lies
and statistics.
"Whatever it is, I'm against it!"
Marx
(Groucho, of course)
Yep, that is SOOOOOOoo true Ameth! My Sister teaches stats and part of her assignment to the kids is to bring in examples of misleading information, like graphs that are "accurate" but misleading. A graph that only shows a portion of the info gives the impression the differences are HUGE!! When the stats are 12.1 12.2 12.4 for instance, if the graph shows ALL from zero to 13, you see the difference is quite small between 12.1 & 12.4... BUT if you only show 12 to 13, the difference appears to be quite substantial! Only one example of "a statistical lie".
I just read this great line: "no one who loves nature and studies it can ever feel alone or unloved in the world."
It's from one of our home school books called The Fairyland of Science by Arabella Buckley. No date in the book, but she died in 1929. It can also be read as a free e-book at Project Gutenberg - gutenberg.com.
I like that one, Sue!
The tree that inspired Joyce Kilmer to write that poem is just down the road from our farm. He was staying at a house that was being used as a summer "boarding house" when he wrote that. It has a beautiful view of Mount Monadnock. One of our older friends' Mother knew him and had some of his handwritten works. Next summer I'll take a photo of "the tree" if I can remember to. The first settler who built our farmhouse was related to the person who built the boarding house. Every time I pass the tree, I can see what he was thinking! It is a beautiful, huge sugar maple - really pretty in the fall.
Don't know what reminded me of this, but I found it in a frame at an antiques shop a few years back, and I keep it in my bedroom. If I had a guest room, I'd put it there.
Sleep Sweet
within this quiet room
O thou! whoe'er thou art,
And let no mournful yesterday,
Disturb thy peaceful heart.
Nor let to-morrow scare thy rest
With dreams of coming ill.
Thy Maker is thy changeless friend,
His love surrounds thee still.
Forget thyself and all the world,
Put out each feverish light,
The stars are watching overhead.
Sleep Sweet
Good Night! Good Night!
Ellen M. H. Gates
Lovely, Sue....comforting, don't you think?
Oh, absolutely, Louise! I have that first paragraph memorized!
"I wouldn't say I invented tacky, but I definitely brought it to its present high popularity."
Bette Midler
The second verse hits the mark for me too!
"Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!" I love that line and use it often.
Memory, what's that line from? It sounds so familiar.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid!

No - Treasure of the Sierra Madre! One of my faves.
Really? Whoa - I wonder if it was "borrowed" from Sierra for Butch Cassidy movie? From Wikipedia -
"Badges?... We don't need no... stinkin' badges!!" is one of the most frequently quoted, misquoted and parodied movie quotations in history. In 2005, it was chosen as #36 on the American Film Institute list, AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movie Quotes.
Or maybe, I'm just wrong again.
The next part in Wiki credits Sierra as the original!
don't be like that - you're both pretty, ok..?
; )
Your right - it does credit Sierra as the original. I'm going to have to get Butch Cassidy from the library and check it out. chuckle
Amy??? Was that a line too?
just from me...
; )
AMY LOL, that was too cute! And so appropriate! Mmmmm are you a mother of daughters???
no - i'm a stage manager. a sort of mother to actors, dancers, singers... (some of whom may have been known to call me a different sort of mother!)
Not OUR Amy! They wouldn't dare!
hahahaha - don't bet on it...

“When a man plants a tree he plants himself. Every root is an anchor, over which he rests
with grateful interest, and becomes sufficiently calm to feel the joy of living.” ~ John Muir, 1877
That is very nice.
I had started a new Quotes thread on Sat., 26th, (just found it on p. 3) called "Another Quote". If anyone knows how to link over, I'd appreciate it - or tell me how to.
Thanks!
No problem.
What a great list, Victor. It brings back so many good memories. I laughed out loud when I read "There's no crying in baseball" and "Snap out of it," because those two never fail to crack me up, no matter how many times I see those two movies.
Another of my favorites, which probably will earn me some jeers, was a line Sharon Stone delivered in "Diabolique." In the scene, she's smoking and walking past a man, who says: "Second-hand smoke kills, you know." She blows the smoke in his face and replies: "Not reliably."
I've wanted to do that so many times.
Ha ha. Actually Al put the link to the all-time movie quote list. I agree with 'Snap out of it!' - great moment! Also love the scene in the Godfather when he smacks the Sinatra character and says 'You can act like a man!'.
My two oldest sons, 30 & 26 share a house together and they love to watch movies. It is fun to hear them communicate in movie quotes!
It's much more fun to communicate in Stooges quotes!
"Oh, a wise guy! Nyuk nyuk."
