Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
i am going to print that out where i can see it every night. it used to be one of my favourites, but somehow i lost track of it along the way... i definitely need to work on that.
Do You Have a Favorite Quote, Gardening or Otherwise?
Absurdities are some of the best parts of my day.
Love that Emerson quote, Amy! Filled with wisdom!
thanks! i tend to be someone who obsesses over mistakes, and wants everything to be so perfect that sometimes i don't manage to do ANYthing. So that one and L Cohen's "crack in everything" that lets the light get in are really important to me...
Amy - Love that quote. I should put that one where I can see it also. Psyc - great quotes and I can use that spelling one (should include that with every post I send)!! I;m using the speeding one with my two daughters even tlhough they are grown up and I have no control over them any more (never did either). Both have had several speeding tickets and haven't learned from them. Eleanor
Primrose Sue, I was rereading the quotes on this thread and was wondering if you knew the source of the 1st one you posted by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings about needing a place of enchantment ? It reminds me of Virginia Woolf saying we need " A Room of Ones Own". An enchanted place or room would be even better - I guess the garden will do.
I am not sure if I have this exactly right but one I really like is " we are not humans having a spiritual experience we are spirits have a human experience"
I loved the spelling one too : )
laura
Great inspirations, Amy and Laura.
My mom used to say this to all of us:
"With all that you have done today,
have you helped someone along the way?"
I don't know if it's a real quote, or one she made up, but it has stuck with me all my life.
Another poster I had over my desk when I worked at the hospital (my supervisor was NEAT freak). "A clean desk is the sign of a sick mind." Of course what would work equally well for me is "A clean house is the sign of a bored housewife!" I'd rather weed than vacuum anyday! My garden generally looks better than my house.
If I try hard enough, I can cultivate weeds in my house and dust on my daisies! LOL
Another one for neat freaks - "a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered brain and an empty desk is a sign of an _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _!" That doesn't always work though - I have to unclutter my desk to get my brain uncluttered but then I guess my brain would be empty. I like to keep things around me organized cause it helps keep my brain organized and functioning clearly even though those things get a bit dusty!! it also saves time if I put things back after I use them. Then I don't have to spend time looking for titems when I want them again. OK, so i have an uncluttered, empty, dusty brain!! Eleanor
Yes, I admit it, I do NOT like chaos and things that are not put away. I just don't always "getaroundtuit". If there are too many things uncomplete. or not put away. I HAVE TO STOP and take care of it because it is distracting and irritating too!
THE KISS OF THE SUN FOR PARDON, THE SONG OF THE BIRDS FOR MIRTH, YOU ARE NEARER GODS HEART IN A GARDEN, THAN ANYWHERE ELSE ON EARTH.
Lovely pixie! Eleanor
That's a good one, Pix!!!
Yes. That's another good one, pixie.
I love that one.....trying to get DS to make me a graden stake with that saying. I want him to make it and do all the art work on it, he's very creative and it will mean so much more to me.
I agree, pixie. It's the gifts made with love that seem to be the most treasured by us.
Here are 800+ to choose from ;o)

Thanks so much Terry!
I love this one it speaks the truth.
"...a garden is like life: something is always doing well, something is struggling, something is being born anew, and something is dying."
Edith Reed
Been there ... seen those.
I have used a few of those quotes on the greeting cards I make. Of course, I give them their proper credits. Thanks for reminding us, Terry.
It is not the critic who counts. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marked with blood, sweat and tears, and who knows in the end the triumph of high achievement. But if he fails...he fails while daring greatly and his place will never be among those poor and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat.
Theodore Roosevelt
Good one, Sherrie.
Ok...on my shopping spree today, I stopped in at the Christmas Tree store near me. They have about 15 or so of the books I described earlier, the price of the books= $1.99. It would make a neat/unexpected gift for a gardener that you know, or yourself. If anyone wants one, or a few, let me know so I can go pick them up. Plus it gives me a reason to go back to the store...lol.
Thom, did you post on the decorating thread yet?
On a serious note - "Does the one who dies owning the most toys, WIN?" Can't remember where I saw that but I didn't make it up. Goes along with, "When you die, you can't take it with you"!! Eleanor
p.s. - I've saved a lot of quotes over the years but they are in a box under another heavy box and I can't get to it unless someone gets it for me - I keep forgetting to ask someone.
Eleanor:
I hope someone can get it for you, as I don't want you over-doing it and landing your sweet self back in surgery.
I remember seeing the bumper sticker on a BIG RV "We're spending our Children's Inheritance". The funny part was, I associate that expression with environmental causes. You know, old growth forest, clean water and natural resources like petroleum. THIS time they actually meant MONEY!!!
I've seen that bumper sticker before and it has always given me a bit of a chuckle, too. I took it to mean money also the first time I saw it.
"Life is what happens to you, while your busy making other plans"John Lennon. "True,Smokey the Bear, doesn't set forest fires, but he eats boy scouts for their hats"Lenny Bruce "The rain has filled the birdbath Again, almost"Jack Kerouac
"I love deadlines, I'm especially fond of the whooshing sound they make as they fly past."
"Old age and treachery will win over youth and skill."
I have been quoting this to my kids since they were teenagers. I do not know where I first heard it. but I love that expression!!!
Not YOUR parents?!! I love the word 'guile'.
I was able to get to my box of quotes. This is one of my favorites - "A century from today, these things won't mean a thing: the house you lived in, the money you made, the clothes you wore, the kind of car you drove, but the world will be a better place because you loved and helped a child!"
"Some complain because the rose has thorns; some give thanks because the thorns have roses!" ( Is your cup half empty or half full?)
"Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be!"
"Blessed are the flexible for they shall not be bent out of shape!"
"Most of our lives are spent: 1) spending $$ we don't have and 2) buying things we don't need to impress people we don't like!"
"Learn to accept what is given instead of always yearning for more. Lavish expectations too often tarnish blessings!" (from one of my favorite books - "A Year By the Sea" by Joan Anderson)
These quotes have been on my frig at one time or another and I'm thinking maybe some of them should go back. I sometimes keep forgeting what's really important in my life!! Eleanor
Don't we all, Eleanor! I hope you didn't hurt yourself getting to those neat quotes! Lots of wisdom in dem d'ere words!!
"Blessed are the flexible .... " I love that one!
I like that Gumby one too!
Just discovered this thread, love it
This is on a tile on my fridge, I have to read it now and then
If you are going through hell, keep on going...
