Do You Have a Favorite Quote, Gardening or Otherwise?

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

It should have been, I liked Rodney very much,
but it was Richard -Google him. ☺

Northern, NJ(Zone 6b)

Henry Mitchell is good for many wonderful quotes:
The Essential Earthman - "It soon becomes clear to the gardener, who has probably started out to achieve a certain bloom, that the cycle of life in the plant is a good bit more enjoyable then the bloom itself."

"Now the gardener is the one who has seen everything ruined so many times that (even as his pain increases with each loss) he comprehends - truly knows - that where there was a garden once, it can be again, or where there never was, there yet can be a garden so that all who see it say, "Well, you have favorable conditions here. Everything grows for you." Everything grows for everybody. Everything dies for everybody."

Oohhhh. I like that second quote. That's a good perspective.

Did someone mention Einstein?

I tend to google a quote that suits the purpose at the moment.

Cute, Anita! That was just the picture I was imagining at the time.

I actually just saw this one and had to laugh...As I thought it said Victor...

"Victory goes to the player who makes the next-to-last mistake."
- Chessmaster Savielly Grigorievitch Tartakower (1887-1956)

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Now, that's perfect!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I Google people I admire and find out what they said on the subject(s).

"I once had a sparrow alight upon my shoulder for a moment, while I was hoeing in a village garden, and I felt that I was more distinguished by that circumstance that I should have been by any epaulet I could have worn."

- Henry David Thoreau

Beautiful sentiment, and a marvelous photograph to go with it.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hee hee - thanks Anita! Nice pic, WC. From this AM? We have about an inch or so.

Van Etten, NY(Zone 5a)

Thank you WaterCan. Thoreau gets to the essence of it all! Wonderful photo.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

... from this am, the DW thought I was nuts to go outside at 9am on Sunday...but then she 'knows me' by now... ☺

Yes, Thoreau really hits the spot... cool guy, wish we had more like him! - glad you enjoyed the shot, [they're] eating now... compliments of yours truly. ☺

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

WaterCan - I love that Thoreau quote and your photo is just perfect.....lovely way to greet a snowstorm! I agree that we need many more Thoreau's in the world. One of my favorite things was visiting the Walden's Pond area and cabin.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I'm a Thoreau fan too.

Wayland, MA(Zone 6a)

I love all of the quotes ! my friend phylis and I often thought we should right a book of old sayings , you know the ones that you grew up with , that you grand parents said to describe or compare something Jacks( My DH) uncle bibba was full of them . when describing jacks cousin who talked constantly he said
" that one was vacinated with a victrola needle"

(Zone 4a)

"Life is like a box of chocolates...you just never know what your gonna get"

I have the quote below written in my daughter's baby book...I just love it...

Maureen Hawkins:
Before you were conceived I wanted you
Before you were born I loved you
Before you were here an hour I would die for you
This is the miracle of life.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very nice, Dawn.

(Zone 4a)

Well thank you Victor.

I was hooked for good with the ultrasound photos. Was dreaming about it so much the next day driving home from work that I didn't realize I was speeding. Was pulled over by a cop.

(Zone 4a)

Yes those u/s pics so do make it so much more real when you actually see the life growing inside.

It took us a year to conceive the first time and I often thought of that quote and how true it was for me....

I do like this one alot.....

'I have found, through years of practice, that people garden in order to make
something grow; to interact with nature; to share, to find sanctuary, to heal,
to honor the earth, to leave a mark. Through gardening, we feel whole
as we make our personal work of art upon our land.'

And I saved the the best quote for northern gardeners for last:

"The fair-weather gardener, who will do nothing except when the wind and weather and everything else are favorable, is never master of his craft."-- Henry Ellacombe

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Fair weather gardeners are like fair weather friends.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I love that ..... "people garden to heal".
That's certainly true. And it works.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

True for me too. Also I garden to make a positive impact on the planet. Note: it doesn't have to be neat and tidy to be positive! LOL

Very nice, Amy. Very nice indeed!

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

This is a great thread. One of my favorites is " The Earth Laughs in Flowers" by E. E. Cummings I believe. Everytime I go by a field of wild flowers this quote comes to mind.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Oh yes. I've heard that one. It's nice.
e.e. cummings is one of my favorite poets.

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

There are several I have seen sandblasted into rock:

"Grow " "Garden of Weedin" those are two of my favorites!
Pat

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

I have seen these on garden plaques
"I tried but it died"
" Plantum Whydidibuyum"
"Unknownus"

I have one of my own and those who grew up in the 70's will appreciate it: "Weeding is fundamental".

Good one!

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

I keep reminding myself, "You are what you eat"! (? source) And another one along those pounds, "Eat to live, not live to eat"!!!!! (? source) Those two quotes from someone haunt me every time I open the frig. Eleanor

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

marie - I agree....great thread! I love all of the quotes I've read tonight here. - the funny ones and the ones like Amy's that just capture it all for me. I have always loved poetry......used to memorize tons of poems...and Candyce...I too love ee cummings. Nice job everyone!!

(Pat) Kennewick, WA(Zone 5b)

My supervisor used to tease me that I was the Queen of quotes. In therapy to put a client at ease I would tell them

"Don't worry about your spelling, Noncreative people only know ONE way to spell something!"

"The best predictor of FUTURE behavior is PAST behavior." (OF course people (your kids, spouse, parents) can change but don't bet on it unless YOU do something differently!)

The one my parents used with us kids when we got our drivers license "Pick a speed you can afford." THAT was their total lecture on speeding. It must have worked, all 4 of us have VERY few tickets in the more than 35 years we have been driving (I have NONE).

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very good psych! Love the spelling one.
