a few of my 10,000,000 skunk cabbages are showing their pretty, aroid shapes
What did you see on your walk?
Great shots kudrick. What a nice walk.
Nice kudrick - thanks!
thank you both. i don't often walk to the end of my property; it is covered in sticky bushes and is impassable (sp?) most of the year.
i followed the deer trails so it wasn't too bad :-)
Kudrick - thanks for sharing your walk with us! I especially found your fungi shots to be very interesting! The one that looks like the moon & green cheese is fascinating. I have a small collection of the "funky fungi" from some of our trees in NH and find them to have a beauty all their own!
It looks like a wonderful piece of property for finding all kinds of interesting things on a walk!
This Pileated Woodpecker condo is not inhabited right now, but last year we had a family with young babies living in it. As we would pass by it, my DH would knock on the tree and they would stick their heads out to say hello. LOL
donnie, thanks! i have always loved the woods, probably because i grew up in baltimore city, and my daddy used to take my for rides in the countryside. we would go 'mushroom hunting', and bring the shrooms back to my italian grandmother, who make the best spaghetti sauce and polenta in the world!
i love woodpecker; we have quite a few around here. a few months ago, a baby woodpecker flew into our glass front doors and i thought he was a goner. i put in a shoebox and when i checked on him later, he flew out of the box and around the room. i was sooooo happy! i took him outside and he happily flew of to mom.
do you live in fl or nh? i used to live in melbourne.
kudrik - we are now in Fla., and we are in NH for the summers. I loved your story about the woodpecker baby. That's awesome! I'm glad it had such a happy ending!
My DH and I love the birds - no matter where we are. In NH, we love walking in our woods too. You can walk for miles in 2 directions and never see anything but trees, huge rocks, mosses, mushrooms, cellar holes and wildlife. I grew up loving the woods - imprinted by my Father's love of nature - and I am most at home in my spirit when I am either in the woods, surrounded by flowers or walking along the river here.
awesome. we are truly kindred spirits.
have a really nice day!
Kudrick I love your woods photos. As we speak, ours are being covered with snow. But yesterday I took this one. It is one of my favorite trees, an old black cherry, on our road.
how gnarly and beautiful! i love twisted trees; i just bought a 'harry lauder's walking stick' and it is so contorted, i love it! i can't wait for snow, and it may come soon. hopefully
Bebop - I love our tall black cherry in NH. Occasionally we have had raccoons climb way up in the top to eat the fruit.....I've seen them do it twice.
Kudrick - kindred spirits indeed.....and I'd love to see a post of your walking stick. My DH carves walking sticks that are so clever. He personalizes them and gives them as gifts to family and special friends. They are awesome. They really are great to carry in the woods. We laugh because he has started his "urban line" and carries one on our walks around the neighborhood here. It's quite a conversation piece! Have you ever seen a gumbo limbo tree? We have started some cuttings here in Fla. because we love their contorted form....Gnarly is so interesting, and fun to climb as a kid!
I haven't seen raccoons up the cherry trees but I have seen the scat they leave with cherries in it.
Bebop - that last post should go on the scatelogical thread!! LOL
donnie, my walking stick is small, about 2 ft high. i'll go take a pic later. i looked up the gumbo limbo, and am sure that i saw them in fla. i remember an exquisitely weird specimen called an 'oily sausage tree', very twisted with what looked like sausage hanging on long threads from the upper branches. i also loved banyans. fla is a great place for unusual plants and trees. we had a botanical garden on campus with all manner of wonderful exotics. our prez was the head of the palm society and had many beautiful palms in the 'jungle' as we called it. my favorite is caryota mitis, fishtail palm. i have one in the house (it's about 7 ft. high) but i put it out in the spring with the other house palms.
Kudrick - Funny you should mention the fishtail palm. Just a few days ago, my DH and I were reading up on that palm as contrasted with the foxtail palm that is a real favorite of ours. The fishtail palm is very interesting!
What campus are you referring to?
Today there was a lot of activity in the river as we passed by. First we came across the little white heron who is often there when I don't have my camera handy.
i went to f.i.t. in melbourne. your last photo brings back memories of the melbourne causeway; used to ride my bike over it going to school and often stopped to watch porpoises and manatees playing in the indian river.
just went outside and took some pics for you. we are having a little freezing rain, and my rain chain caught the cameras eye.
if you're interested, i have put a lot of my plants pics on my website. go to www.kudrick.com and click on maryann's garden.
Did you walk to the window at least?
I do like the reds in that pic.
victor, simply beautiful, as always
Thank you, kudrick.
Maryann - I loved your pics and your wonderful website. Really lovely photos there....even peaked at your beautiful daughter's wedding....
That first pic you posted sure makes it look cold in Maryland!
Victor - those gorgeous shots of your Nandina should make their way to the photog. contest! They are very Christmasy! How on earth did you get the photo of the leaf impaled on your roof without climbing out on the roof in such slippery conditions? Like Al, you are Houdini-esque at times??? I also enjoyed your purple finch pics!
Thanks Louise. Hope the birds are not angry that I couldn't ID them!
Victor- I'm not certain about them, but they look like purple finches to me. We have more of the goldfinches in NH, but we had a number of purple finches in Connecticut. They're lovely birds.
