Very nice pics Jane!

That's a cool looking WP, thanks for posting it!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Wow, a WP at a hummingbird feeder. Very nice! You have any of my Hummers down there?

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Today I had a lucky shot of a pair of Hooded Mergansers who appeared in the retention pond behind the grocery store. The male.

Wow! Aren't those the coolest things ever!!
Great pictures, Bsharf!!

Quoting:
I believe the term is "in eclipse"

Not quite - eclipse is the moult plumage that ducks have just after the breeding season (late summer to early autumn) when the males have the same drab brown plumage as the females.

Thanks Resin

Very nice pics bsharf!

They are beautiful!

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Beautiful Hooded Mergansers!

I spent close to 30 minutes this morning watching these 2 female Downy WP's fussing in the yard, it was pretty entertaining. They actually made contact once but most of it was just chasing each other around and a lot of squawking. This was the only photo I was able to get with both of them in it.

Nice pic sadie!

Wish I had some pics to add but I have a few small Hawks stalking my yard and it looks like a ghost town!

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Today, for the first time, I saw a hawk of some sort come flying thru the feeding area. I wasn't paying attention and it scared me almost as much as the birds, I didn't see it actually get anything and it didn't come back. It was amazing how motionless the 1 Titmouse, 1 Chickadee and 1 Downy, that remained in the tree, were and for how long. I don't think they moved for at least a couple of minutes.

Here's a scared stiff TM

Thanks Pelle.

It's funny, we were both posting about hawks. I hope mine doesn't become a regular visitor!!

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Pelle, I hope your hawks move on soon. I know they have to eat too but it's a bummer when they mess up the birdwatching.

I added a new feeder this weekend, an upside down finch feeder. I put it out Friday and finally had some willing to try it out today. It was funny watching them trying to figure it out, didn't take too long though :-)

Bsharf, I'm envious of your Hooded Merganser pictures. They are rare here and I considered myself lucky to get pictures of a juvenile bird this fall. I looked like the female without the crest.

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

For some reason, the Turkey Vultures seemed to be flying really low today.

Nice pictures everyone!

Pelle …Thanks! Hope your hawk finds somewhere else to go. I love to watch them soaring over the desert here; but it’s no fun when they scare off all the other birds. Between the hawks, roadrunners and occasional rattlesnakes I have here, my little birds really have to stay alert.

Sadie-Mae … Nice Downey WP’s

Mrs Ed … I was surprised too that my woodpecker went for the nectar feeder. I’m not sure where your hummers went; but mine probably joined them. I haven’t seen my hummers since early October; but they’ll be back in the spring.

Bsharf … Nice Hooded Mergansers. Watch out for those “Plain Jane” comments, okay? LOL ;-)

We had our first snow last night; but it had all melted by noon today. My birds look like fat little things with their feathers poofed out. Here’s a pair of Inca Doves trying to keep warm.

Beautiful pic Jane!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Beautiful pics everyone. Jane I love the Doves...they are DH's favorite and are regular visitors to our yard.

The Starlings are out in force today and though they seem like a nuisance they are still fun to watch.

Have seen a Killdeer by the pond two days in a row now...thought they were gone 'til Spring but read that they are in the Mid-West
through Nov. They always make me laugh!! If DH finds a Killdeer nest he always puts a round bale feeder around it so the cows don't step on the eggs.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I think our hawks have picked off all our doves here. They make me chuckle
Don't seem to have as many House Finch either......hmmm.

Well besides the Hawks stalking my yard we also had 2 pairs of

Red-tailed Hawks that came into the tall trees just behind my property and boy were those guys screeching their heads off! I've never heard them be so vocal before!

They look so cool coming in for a landing at the tree tops!

The squirrels get so nervous when their around, haha.

The smallest Sharp-shinned Hawk I ever saw came zooming into the yard today; if I hadn't gotten a good look at him I would have sworn it was something else. I'm pretty sure he got a House Finch that was foolish enough to fly into my ghost town for just a moment and it was really great watching his flying skills like turning on a dime in the air.

I guess all these Hawks is why I haven't had any Starlings yet. Theres hundreds in the area, I see them all over town.

Jeffersonville, IN(Zone 6b)

OMG, Pelle, the Starlings I saw tonight was just unbelieveable!! There were hundreds in my trees in the front yard. I opened the door, and to see all these birds flying as they do was amazing!!

I was watching the birds earlier today, and saw a few Starlings in a tree in my front yard. Well, the mockingbird did not like them, and ran every one of them away! It was so cool to watch!! Mockingbirds are not the nicest birds, but they certainly come in handy when it comes to the starlings!!

It has been such a long while since I have been able to look at everyone's pictures. So many birds I have not seen here before...the Ladderback WP, the Mergansers and Inca Doves. Thanks for sharing your pics and stories! :)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

As usual you guys are taking some stellar pics.. Wow wallaby, GP, pelle, lily, Dinu... and all!!

The usual characters are at the feeders daily. The little winter guys haven't shown up yet :- ! We did take a trip to the Piney Woods last weekend and I saw lots of them, but not to many close enough to take pics of.

This little Titmouse was kinda curious about me though, lol. They had so many good places to hide.

The titmice seemed to be flying along with these flycatchers, especially because of all the flocks of Black and Turkey Vultures that were weaving through the forest for carrion. That kept the little guys flying almost constantly, never lighting long enough to focus on.

There were lots of these little Yellow Bellied Flycatchers... so cute!!!
