Let's get together #2

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

Kim that's no problem. My DH calls me Kitty, and I think that's because he has had a cat named Kitty for 7 years, so it's one less name for him to remember...
Here's a pic of the Aphelandra hartwegiana (I rmembered to look at its tag!) that will bloom soon.

Cathy, the choko is a pear-shaped vegetable which grows on a vine. Nothing to do with chocolate.....They sell them at our grocery stores, but I have yet to cook one. Chrissy can tell you how to cook them. There maybe a picture in the plant files.

london England, United Kingdom

Cathy, I have that lovely salvia too! Wish I had all the other beautiful things I have seen here!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Chrissy takes the prize when it comes to blooms. We all have some plants that bloom just gloriously, but Chrissy...everything blooms its heart out.

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

Texas77, thanks for the translation! I've tried chayote squash (the local name for the choko here) and found it to be rather bland and pleasant. Added some garlic & cheese and it tasted good!

Terri, I imagine you've probably used that Salvia in one of your beautiful flower sculptures?!!! Maybe it will be the inspiration for a moonlit periwinkle parade...

Chrissy, send some of that magic plant dust our way!

I'll be dreaming of flower garden all night long.
Cathy

Cathy, I'll have to try it....love garlic and cheese!

Well I turn my back for a minute and we are into the food again ha ha ha I love the chayote ( mine is a very good white smooth type ) I cook 2'' chunks of it in baked vegs (you know with your other baked vegs ) or lightly tossed in good extra virgin olive oil and roasted with unpeeled garlic cloves and sprigs of rosemary ...plenty of pepper and salt ...cook for about 30/40 mins until tender remove from oven ...sprinkle with a little balsamic vinegar and put back in the oven for another 10 mins ...the balsamic vinegar caramelizes the surface of the choko and it is just delicious. You get hundreds off a vine and you can pickle, boil,
curry and bake them, they take up the flavour of whatever you cook them with.
I have been very busy today with errands for hubby but I confess to watching two movies ...one last night that I just could not resist
Moonstruck (love it) and tonight I could not resist Fried Green Tomatoes ( by the way I think chockos par boiled first and dried then cooked in a similar fashion would be most acceptable) Both of these movies are great favourites of mine :)
Oh the salvias are just lovely ...aren't salvias great plants? I just love them and the edible one is very pretty when in flower as well as delicious to eat!
I did not have time to take pictures today let me see what I can find
Sorry if you have seen it before ...I can't remember

DH has been cooking fried green tomatoes all summer. I tell myself it is a vegetable and there isn't very much oil . He does pan fry, not deep fry and uses olive oil. Does that make it healthy. Makes it good, I know that. Chrissy, I am going to copy your recipe for the choko. We have them in the market and have never tried them. We will usually eat anything that can't get off the table by itself.
That sounds so good. Even at 8 in the morning.

supposed to be a glorious day here. Noticed the EE's are still putting out new leaves. They are supposed to be frozen to the ground by now.

Oh LouC you are so funny
"We will usually eat anything that can't get off the table by itself."
Look for youngish ones ...I don't know how good the chayotes are from your supermarkets.I use just picked ones ...you may have to cook the supermarket ones just a little longer ...until they are tender
(test with the tip of a sharp knife). In Australia for decades after the depression every garden had a choko vine a mulberry tree and a chook house (chickens) as these things saved many from starvation during the hard times. I hope you enjoy them.May I show you a "borrowed picture" of a tree someone sent me seeds of from tropical QLD ? I am excited about them as I have never grown them before ...

This is the other kind of seed they sent ( another borrowed picture)

I have no doubt whatsoever that you will have total success with both seed...and...that they will grow in record breaking strides. Wonder if I could grow a choko? If they are grown in Mexico, I would think there is a fair chance they would produce here. Something to consider for next Spring. The pictures are wonderful.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Wow, what a breath-taking flowering tree!!! Congrats Chrissy. Oh, may I come to visit?

Oops that was the wrong one ...back later with the right one meanwhile I hope you all have a wonderful day ...I have finished my coffee and will have to go mow the weeds shortly the rain has stopped for a bit I think although they have just said that we can expect showers and thunderstorms until next Monday!
Until then y'all take care now !
(picture of a cousin to the "borrowed pics" I grow this one but it only grows to 10ft ...I took this pic in the Spring when it was just staring up)

It is 6.15 Thursday morning 77F and the sun is shining for the moment ...the Photos I posted for the first two are the photos of one lot of seeds and the other lot are candlestick senna.
Yes LouC anyone can grow chokos if you have a reasonable Summer warmth ...they will die down in the Winter but they come back in the Spring. You can just cover the plant up with a bit of mulch after cutting back the foliage. In Texas I would let it scramble through trees so it has some shelter from the hottest sun.
Hi to everyone else ...that last one that I grow is called senna
didymobotrya whew a mouthful! ...well I am off to mow the weeds now I hope I take out a few grasshoppers while I am at it you can practically hear them chomping away at everything! :)

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi Everyone!!!!!!!!! Hope you are having a good day!

We have a grasshopper in the garden that I would like to find!!!! He has eaten several of my plants. If I catch him, he's a goner!!!!

It is warm and sunny here, very nice out. Have to go run some errands, be back later!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

We had some huge grasshoppers this past year - is it a plot? :-)

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Not many grasshopper found in my garden but one or two this summer. Ain't I the lucky one. :-)

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Grasshoppers weren't bad here this year. So the crops and gardens were mostly saved from hoards. lol.

Now getting ready for snow, maybe freezing rain this weekend. :~(

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Oooh Pepper, I was thinking of going further South, wanna come down here for a short vacation. 66F. today, and also found some butterfly in the garden. :-)

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

I would love to see the South one day. Oooh, butterflies! Miss them but have lots of birds now to keep an eye and ear out for.

I am actually looking forwards to the snow. I just didn't want it this weekend since I have to travel into the city this weekend and deal with crazy drivers. Let it snow on Monday!!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Pepper, for you and my other friends here, come and walk a virtual tour of my garden ...this year in review. Hope you will enjoy follow my threads.

Oh Lily, Love, what a wonderful trip. Thank for sharing your Paradise. MIL has 2 acres on the water of a beautiful lake here in Texas. Your lake has a really pretty outlook.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thanks Christi, I lived in Galveston Tx. for a few years. Then moved here to Al. since '86. My kids loved it there and sometimes call themselves Texans. :-)

Kim, what a beautiful garden you have, thank you for sharing the tour with us. It must be wonderful to be walking (and working) there in real life! Gorgeous!
Aloha
Jenny

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Aloha Jenny; the next best thing in gardening for me? Gardening right where you're! lol. It's my dream to revisit Hawaii someday.
Kim

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Kim, which Island(s) did you visit? If you ever get to Maui we have plenty of room! Then I could pick your brains and maybe I could end up with with just such a glorious mass of blooms!
The area I live in is not so easy as one might think to garden in. We are in the rain shadow of Haleakala and only get a few inches of rain a year - not quite what everyone thinks of as being Hawaii. In order to garden I am having to put in watering systems, oh to live on the windward side with afternoon showers! But on the bright side, the beaches are gorgeous, and the sea is blue, blue, blue!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

The trip took place in the mid-70's. I was a young girl then, I can't remember which Island in Hi. It was neither business or leisure trip. Thus I'm longing to come back to really appreciate the beauty of such wonderful tropical Islands. You know Jeri11? She's made a trip there this past winter. I'm teaming up with her for a revisit in the near future. We'd love to visit.

Thanks Terri, I'm heading back out with trovels & gloves, wanna join me for an outing? Just kidding.
I too have enjoyed some of your posts with flower arrangements. Wonderful tallents you are sharing with us here at Dave's. Thank you.

The weather is perfect. have been out doing what gardeners do...talking to the plants. Still have Gulf Frut cats everywhere. The butterflies don't seem to know it is almost December. The high the next two days is supposed to be 79. Would be great if we didn't get those 25 days in between and everything is up and running and gets killed out right.

Christi

It is pure magic isn't it? peaking into other people's gardens ...to think that one day I wanted to know about a plant that was sulking on me (it is doing just fine now :) and I googled the question ...up popped a site called daves garden ...it explained that it was designed for gardeners everywhere a place to talk gardening ...well that was last Winter ...now since that time I have been all over the cyber World and talked to hundreds of wonderful people here in these forums ...I have swapped bits and seeds with lovely and generous Australian gardeners from all parts of Australia.
It has been such an amazing journey for me ...thanks everyone :)
chrissy :)

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Speaking of Australia....the fern after it's namesake.

I see you have a peanut butter Cassia Chrissy.

LouC - I noticed the same thing today...Butterflies don't know it's December...Lets see only 16 more days to go!!!! Shortest day of the year will be behind us on this side of the pond, and we're on the downword slide...wooo hoo!! That's celebration in itself!

The little dangling gecko decoration at the end of the fern is Sharis mark she left on the garden!

How funny! And here I was blaming it all on Pooter! LOL

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

What a gorgeous tree fern! I wasn't sure if it was my eyes or if there really was a lizard hanging from the branch, how cute!
I'm already looking forward to longer days too, not enough time after work to get stuff accomplished before it gets dark. Come on spring!
