Let's get together #2

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Tropicman is doing good. He just doesn't have much time to get on here right now. He has too many greenhouses plus working so time on here is limited. I talked to him the other day.

The sweet potato incident was petty funny. But we decided not to tell my aunt about it cause it was the first time she had ever made them. The potatoes weren't quite done and the marshmallows caught on fire. She knows nothing about it. LOL. We took pity on her.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

You are very sweet. Glad Don is ok. Tend to worry about his health.

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

lol. Only health problem right now is not enough time on here. :~)

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thanks for the pic. of the Queen Crepe Myrtle Chrissy.
Hope everyone is having a good evening.

Hi everyone! Glad you all had a nice Thanksgiving. We only had four of us for dinner, but it seemed like more! The work leading up to the day is what kills you. When I think those were my ancestors at the first Thanksgiving, I'm amazed. BTW, we went out and bought a treadmill yesterday!

Chrissy, I saw Bindi and her mom on a news show the day before the parade and she is as cute as ever. The interviewer commented on a movie offer she heard Bindi had rec'd and Terry piped in and said "Bindi doesn't know about that." Good on ya, Mom! Bindi said she didn't want to get away from the animals. Very focused, that girl. :-)

Loved the tour of Maria's garden.

Kathleen

Hi k and everyone, yes she is the exact replica of her daddy ...I hope she will be ok ...children are very resiliant and she has remarkable genes.I greatly admire Terry she has suffered terribly, but has shown great dignity and strength.
Have fun on the treadmill!
I was watching a medical show last night and they said that for all those people "pounding the pavement" there will be a future (in old age) of injured joints. They said if you must run ...run on grass or sand ...but better still if thinking of your joints walk instead! they also said treadmills were very good.
I bought one a few years ago intending to use it while watching the telly ...ha ha ha we switched it on and it sounded like a jet plane warming up, I could not stand the noise, these days I just walk ...yes on the grass!
Have fun with it k!
Oh look at that pretty picure! Ll what a lovely place you live in :)
Coooeeeeee TM we miss you mate, take care ...I can just see you there in your greenhouse :)
Mmmmm that coffee sounds good 77 I think it's about that time for me ....love my coffee!
7.30 am Monday morning Sydney time 72 F muggy and damp
Guess everyone is just about recovered from your celebrations by now, Sydney had a huge Christmas parade yesterday! Christmas is fast upon us ...well coffee beckens
Have a good one y'all :)

It's been quite the rainy and cold weekend, only to be topped by clearing skies and temperatures below 40F, I think 37F is the forcast. about 40F below my comfort level. Despite the cold, the plants are responding to the rain. I spied the aristolochia blooming.
Looks like it will be back to normal by mid week 70's/50's. I'll probably have to move stuff back out of the green house as it heats up despite windows all the way around that I open. Now only if I could open the roof too!
Several winter blooming tropicals are budding now, will take pictures when they bloom.

Jeanne, I think that coffee smelling guy was flirting with you!

Here is the aristolochia..or however it's spelled.

Now that I know where you live, think I might just bring my little tisket/tasket basket and my little snippers and get a little of this and a little of that and somemore over here and somemore of there...

Brought the double red thingy into the house. Afraid it might be too cold in the tool shed. Sure don't want to loose it.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL, bring a truck too, I'll give more than little tiskets.
My double thingys seem to like the cool weather

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

35 degrees?

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi Randy! That aristolochia is gorgeous! Do I have one of those?????? If not please add it to my list of wants!!!!!!!!! LOL WOW!!!!

As for coffee guy....you think?????? Never know! He did have a nice smile.

Christi...not sure on the exact temp but it sure is chilly out! and Windy too! I put a jacket, and hat on this evening and took a walk out in the garden and sat things up that the wind had knocked over!!! Brought the Phalaenopsis orchid inside until it warms up some. Much too cold for me to stay out there for very long!!!!!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Sun's out today. Yay!

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Lovely photos!
Long time since I have seen such still water as that Lily_love, the reflections of the birds is wonderful!
Chrissy, the crepe myrtle is so pretty, you have the most awsome color in your garden! Hope your ear is on the mend - that must have been some blow you took...
Randy, fancy getting a bloom when the weather has been so chilly for you! Is that also known as a Dutchmans Pipe? Or have I got the wrong vine? Does it have a weird odor? Inquiring minds want to know!
Hey you guys - "double red thingies"?
Aloha!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Get so mixed up by corresponding with the same folks on different threads. Randy sent a start , 16", of a tropical red hibiscus. It has two strange blooms in one stem. He posted a picture somewhere. Maybe it is in the Texas Forum someplace. His is still outside. Quite a difference in zone 8a and 9. He can get away with a lot more than I.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

And in turn you can get away with alot more than I. Christy. Yes those dutchman's pipes but not the Giganteas, but its relative the Elegans cultivar is said to be hardy in cooler climate. Giganteas didn't do well here in my zone. (Def. need overwinter indoor).
Thanks again Chrissy, I'm glad you've enjoyed my other threads.

This is gigantea dutchman's pipe. :-) The "Elegan" its blooms are somewhat smaller, but almost identical, and it's said to be hardy here. I'll have one plant outdoor for the experimentation/investigational trail. lol.

Hi everyone still raining here, we had 1 inch in an hour last night the Russian sage is lying flat on the ground! but after seeing those Malibou fires I am not complaining!
LouC sometimes my Hibiscus throw "sports" so you may have a sport or sports on yours, you know like the camelias sometimes do.
It will be interesting to see what happens.
Oh Lily_love ...your botanical garden is so lovely ...and in such a lovely area it must be like living in the Botanical gardens.
Look I wonder if I could ask a favour of you ...we ozzys want to exchange some Angel's Trumpet cuttings ...I have never sent cuttings before and I see where you folk have great success in doing it ...please pretty please could someone tell me the best way to do it?
Things like how to pack and how long they can travel safely etc,
I would really appreciate it.
The Dutchman's pipe is pretty amazing. My mum used to grow it
until someone told her it kills some butterflies is that true? or just a myth.
77 take it easy, and everyone else stay cosy and warm ...I am off to paddle up to the letterbox ha ha ha PS this is my huge Murraya in it's second flush this season the air is full of the scent :)

As I mentioned once before, Chrissy. Popular culture has the garden of eden in Africa. I think it was more someplace right outside of Sydney. would expect this beauty in the tropics but not OZ.

Hi LouC it isn't really all that wonderful at the moment I took that pic yesterday ...you should see the petal carpet right now it is an inch thick with the flowers washed off in the heavy rain, it's like this (and I am sure you can relate ) when you have the water ...you can hear things growing just about. In the drought it resembles African Summer, brown fields and lethargic plants just hanging on by a thread, give it water and manure ...Eden :)

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Chrissy;
I know a few friends in MSG forum that may know ways to ship international, I'll invite them here to chat with us, and give some idea.
Brugs are so tough a plant. Cuttings will travel easily if pass international inspections? And I don't know how that works.

As far as Dutchman's pipe, perhaps that what Old-wives' tales. Dutchman's is host vine to some beautiful butterflies. The caterpillars' wormy, spikey appearances perhaps wasn't for the fainted of hearts. But they give way to some beautiful butterflies which I'm on the look out to find out more.

We finally have sunshine and my lake has dried up, and yes I am taking it easy....still vegetating!!!!

Chrissy your plants are beautiful!!!!!!!!

Chrissy, here's a link to a thread on the Plant Trading Forum that might help - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/502752/

Looks a bit bedraggled, wet and chewed on but I love the exotic scent and the leaves are huge, this one is hanging over my second floor balcony ...right where I can smell them through the window.
This one gives you big yellow fruit that tastes like fruit salad to eat ...the flavour is ok but I prefer the "prper passionfruit for eating ...this one is really just for loving.:)

Golly sorry everyone I did not make myself clear I mean we ozzies want to swap with each other within Australia, I don't think we can do International stuff because of disease and bugs. All I wanted to know is how to ensure the cuttings get to their destinations alive ...sorry you see Australia is a very big place like America and it may take days for cuttings to reach their destination.Thankyou very much for your quick responses I feel awful *blushing* that I did not explain it properly.
My Carissa isstarting to flower ...love the pretty white star flowers and scent :)

The 4'oclocks are leaping out of the ground in all this wet ...flowering soon :)

Thumbnail by

Chokos will have an early crop I think ready by Christmas ...maybe ready to be cooked roasted in a little olive oil flavoured with garlic and rosemary and a sprinkle of salt and pepper and balsamic vinegar! yum!

Thumbnail by

Jerusalem artichokes growing like mad ...ever grown them? they look like little sunflowers and the vegies themselves are a great substitute for water chestnuts ...very good for diabetics

I will go and do some work now ...have a good one! each and everyone!

Beautiful garden as usual, Chrissy. Ok, never mind about international trades issue. lol. Brug cuttings being sent locally, they should be good in transit during mild weather. (Neither burning hot, nor freezing cold) 2-5 days in transit usually is best. Most of us mail them out on the 1st day of the week. That ensure, no sitting time in the back of transit companies over the weekend postal off-day. :-) No postal service here in the States on Sunday, how about the land of Oz?

Chrissy, beautiful pics, the carissa and the wax b's look beautiful! We are dry dry dry in SW Florida, wish we would get a nice day of rain.
Here's a pic of a Polydamas caterpillar on my pipevine, chomping away happily. When I bought the vine, it had a freshly hatched butterfly on it and another hatched in the car on the way home! Plant it and momma butterfly will find it, there are 6 fat cats on it now.

Finally got some beautiful Firespike to put in the garden. I love these gorgeous red blooms!

Thanks for sharing those beautiful pics. as well more info. on the butterflies, Caren (?).

Lovely pics s those dear little Mickey Mouse faces! and the firespike! ...before I joined daves garden I did not know of that name at all ...even though I grow it, mine is not in flower yet.
The little chubby muncher looks very well fed ...there were some huge butterflies dancing around in the back yard between the showers ...I was surprised to see some I did not recognise all over the much rain battered boges they were very big ones and many dragonflies hovered all all over the place as well. I ducked inside for the camera but it was raining again when I went back out.:(
I might see them again today and if I do I will try to get a couple of pics. Meanwhile here is where they were
Happy gardening everyone!

Chrissy, that is my favorite color boug! A question for you: what are chokos (yesterday's post 4232534)? Jerusalem artichokes or something else? Do they have anything to do with chocolate? If so, I want a dozen!

Lily_love, I'm trying to keep track of at least one of the cats so I can take another pic when it's chrysalis time, we'll see.

One of the plants I got from Gardino Nursery a couple months back is already throwing out a bloom stalk, I think it's an Aphelandra, will have to take a pic of it soon. It will be orange, I can already see the color peeking through!

Cathy

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thanks Cathy, forgive me for calling you Caren....at least I remember some of the letters...lol. Please keep us posted of the Cats' progress.
