Look for youngish ones ...I don't know how good the chayotes are from your supermarkets.I use just picked ones ...you may have to cook the supermarket ones just a little longer ...until they are tender

In Australia for decades after the depression every garden had a choko vine a mulberry tree and a chook house (chickens) as these things saved many from starvation during the hard times.
