Hi-I'm moving to Sims,AR in January and would like advice in starting growing vegetables and fruits-what grows, when to plant, seed resources. I'm interested in "edible landscape", organic growing and having as wide a range of varieties as possible.
Thanks, Laurence

Hi Laurence,
Welcome to DG! You'll find all the info you need here at DG. Get together an idea of what you want to grow and what your growing conditions will be, then ask your questions in the appropriate forum: vegetables, fruits & nuts, organic gardening, tomatoes, soil and composting, seed germination, etc. There are so many forums where you can get help from those who've been there.

Wecome to DG, this a great place to come for help and advice. Do figure out what zone your in, that will help act as a guideline on which plants will work the best in your area. Talk to your local extension office, they should be able to provide a list or information about what grows best in your area. Since you're in AZ and y'all usually have water issues, you might also want to explore using native plants and xerilandscaping to get the most our of your garden.
Hi Laurence, I say welcome also, you have found the best site around to ask all the questions that will crop up during your new garden once you move in, for now I would suggest you get along to your library to find some books that will fill you with not only knowledge, but some ideas as to how to start, how to prepare the soil, what is the best light etc for all your different types of fruit and veg, I would impress that you wont have a fruiting garden or veg plat with abundant supply of food for the first couple of years, but you will be able to get some crops to the table if you get it right from the start, dont go on a huge scale to start with as you need to get used to your soil type, your weather conditions and take on board that it takes a wee bit of time to understand how,
what and when you plant your seeds and care for them in your new area, I am sure that a lot of folks can tell you some of these answers, but you need to know how much time, money and enjoyment you want from this, it is a wonderful way to spend your free time, to feed your friends and family, but if you go at it all at the one time, so many gardeners new to it, get very disheartened, you also need to learn about pests and diseases that MIGHT be a problem, while all this sounds like you need to do a degree in gardening, it is quite the opposite IF you are prepared to learn as you go along, books will give you some steps to get you started, you can adapt all this reading to suite your own needs and skills.
Once you move, I would get back here once you know the size of garden, what you need by way of veg, fruit etc, and start the soil prep, the rest is actually the easy fun bit. good luck with your move, once settled, your new garden, look forward to chatting and help if I can. WeeNel.
