question about artemesia...

Midland City, AL

What's the difference between 'Powis Castle' artemesia and 'Silver Mound' artemesia? Which do you like best?

Sorry I can't tell you my personal opinion but maybe this site will help, I hope.

I haven't grown 'Powis Castle' so I can't share, but by experience 'Silver mound' cultivar has a compact habit, solf and serve as foil for other colorful planting is ...wow eye-catching. Plus, it's hardy in our zone.

It's apparent that 'Silver Mound' is low to ground hugging type of plant. Where as 'Powis Castle' and others' textures are more coarse and spread bigger, wider, taller? All are attractive. I soooo love my 'Silver Mound' though.

'Silver Mound' I believe is a little smaller and more compact, and the foliage is also a little finer and softer feeling than 'Powis Castle'

Here are the Plant Files entries for both so you can compare:

Silver Mound stays short and compact...Powis Castle gets rangy and lanky and way taller, and looks like heck when cut back, but regrows quickly.

I've found that those two Artemisia are extremely different in their use and cultural requirements. In the south, 'Powis Castle' tends to grow tall and shrub-like, and therefore it is best suited for the back to middle of a perennial bed. 'Silver Mound' is usually kept fairly low by our heat and in my yard it never grew over 8" tall so I always plant it at the front of the border. Also, 'Powis Castle' tends to be much more tolerant of heat and humidity. 'Silver Mound' usually looks pretty tired and bare in the middle by the end of summer (but I still love it for texture). One helpful hint for growing either one is to make sure to not water the foliage. Wet plants go downhill quickly!
