Not Eactly Sure What this is....But It Isn't Pretty

Bend, OR

This plant was given to me by someone who couldn't possibly have watered it. There were 2 of them and I gave the bigger one to another friend of mine with more room when I re potted it. I figure this is some sort of Yuka or Corn Plant, but my real question is if I should just cut the top leafy parts of it off?

I cut quite a bit off already but thought I read that it may be best to chop it off and let it start over?

Also curious about the best way to take cuttings from this one.....I would like to cut it back and share it. This one is also pretty new to my home so I think the leaves dropping are from the transport and new pot ordeal.

First one looks like a Dracaena of some sort. The second one is a Schefflera. I can't help you on how to take cuttings of it, but one thing that you might want to be careful of is watering--the way that pot is, it's hard to tell when water has come out the bottom and is sitting in the bottom tray that's attached to the pot. This means it's easy for the plant to be sitting in water without you realizing it, and the way some of your leaves look could be a symptom of overwatering (although there are other things that can cause them to look like that too) Make sure whenever you water the pot you take that bottom piece off the pot and drain the excess water out so the plant's not sitting in water.

I agree with ecrane3 that you have some sort of dracaena. my thoughts about it would be to air layer the branches I could explain how to air layer but your best bet would do your own research that way you could learn your own technic. Then like you said cut it off, three or four inches above the soil. This should release hormones to tell the auxillery buds to grow. Hopefuly the bud are still viable and will grow, this is why i would air layer first that way you will still have a plant incase it doesn't grow. As for the propagation of your Schefflera you can either take cuttings, put some rooting hormone on them and stick them in some rooting medium but make sure you have 5 or 6 nodes. I think that I personaly would air layer as many plants as you want to share and when they have rooted pot them up and give them away
