Azaleas for house plants?

Dayton, WA

Did I get Azaleas spelled correctly? I'm a veggie man with only a smattering of flower/houseplant knowledge, but my significant other wants to know if Azaleas can be grown as houseplants.

They do sell them in the houseplant section at the store sometimes, but I have a feeling they'd be happier outdoors.

I have succumbed too many times to the beautiful azaelas that are offered around Valentine's Day. Every single time I have failed to keep this plant alive, I was determined that if I just tried something different, I would succeed. Good grief, if I can grow orchids and hoyas, why should an azaela cause me so much trouble??? I tried misting, pebble trays, special acidic fertilizer, placing the plant by a humidifier, different sun exposures. Nothing worked. It was if one day my plant had leaves and the next day it didn't.

Now, if my right hand reaches out to pick up one of these plants, my left hand slaps it and I remind myself that I have slowly killed somewhere in the neighborhood of a dozen of these plants. I have totally given up on this plant.

Wow, what a testimony! I'll tell my significant other to make sure her left hand knows what her right hand is doing around those azaleas!!

I have loads of them in the garden, but as Ecrane said, you get florist ones at this time of year right through the winter, I have good experience of outdoor ones, but zilch for indoor ones, I secretly think they are treated with either hormones or special grow lights to get them to the stage they are at in shops, however, my experience has always been that the ones for indoors are so temp sensitive that the winter heating in the home dries and kills them, also the artificial lighting we have on in winter harms them, too close to window kills them, too far from natural light also, so I would advise your wife to walk on by when she sees them and settle for something else, they are lovely little plants, but boy, I'd rather throw the money into a charity box to be honest. I got one a few Easters ago and was able to get it outside before it completely died off and it came back, but when I took it indoors for winter, it was a goner. Good Luck anyway. WeeNel.
