Currently I've two pink brugs that are putting out buds in my basement. I hope this is the last "cool" burst, so my brug can begin to be harden off and enjoy the cool pre-spring climate. They're so yearning to be outdoors. lol.

It seems the Pink blooming brugs are the hardiest. Or at least that is what I am seeing from my own experience. I have Whiskers, too, but it has yet to bloom, while the Pink Beauty and Equador Pink have bloomed numerous times for me and even given me the 3 seed pods. I got them all at the same time from Donna.

I have another question. When my PB produced the seed pods, all the leaves dropped off that branch. I guess it took a lot of energy to produce those seeds. But it now looks like that branch is dying back. The ends where the pods hung have withered and died. So I cut them back to the healthy part of each branch. Is this typical of brugs? Or am I doing something wrong. Being a newbie to brugs, I have very limited experience and even more limited knowledge of these beautiful trees.

LOL! about the emerging bloom touching the ground! Too funny! And the bloom hasn't even extended out of the sheath yet! LOL! WOW! Because of this, is it better to let the young starter plants stay in pots which bring them up off the ground a little bit more until they get a foot or so taller? Or does it really matter?

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi Becky!
Congrats on the multiple blooms and even seed pods, that is fantastic!
I'm a newbie to brugs too, so it's learn as I go. I have a NOID brug that's been in the ground for a while, compared to the named ones that have all been in pots. The NOID has grown so much and bloomed multiple times, so, a few weeks ago, I started putting the named babies in the ground too- I want them all BIG! Poor little MEM's blooms will just have to be propped up until she gets a little more height. Doesn't seem to bother the flower at all, it's grown at least an inch since yesterday!

When would it be safe for mine to be planted outside?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

CDLD;
For your zone and mine, it would be safe to move them outdoor after the last frost. It's a little tricky, since our last frost didn't come until around Easter last year. So I've moved my pot in and out of the gh. Move them out to benefit early from the spring-like weather. Move them back in when temp. drops below 30F. They need some aclimating when we haul them outdoor. Once they're used to the outdoor condition, they seem to handle the cooler spring breeze much better than most other tender plants would have.

Kim, thanks, I can't seem to keep up with the last frost dates. They really don't seem accurate do they. This new early dl savings time is nice. I was able to stay out longer pulling annual clover out of my pansy bed.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

You're quite welcome, oooh you've those annual clover there too? LOL, I myself I'm battling with "creeping charley" and creeping chickweeds. Those are something else! If they wander into the lawn, preimergent would have taken care of them. But they're tenacious!!! They have managed to have "sprayed" the seeds into my flower beds, so I've to get close and personal with them. lol.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Yes, my lawn is one purple mass covered in Henbit. I call it clover but it's actually Henbit. I can never remember to put out pre=emergents.

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Now is a good time to put it out. Mine went on the lawn 2/15/08. Trying to get ahead of the weeds for a change.

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Deborah,,, I left several brugs in large pots(actually pipes that I made into pots with no bottom) outdoors this winter (after taking cuttings of course) I am already seeing new growth coming up from the roots on some of them. Now if it will just quit getting so cold at night...

EFG; Jeri too already has her brugs sprouting up. Gorlie!!! Only mine would wait until May to sprout through the ground? Booohooo. That was how late my brugs outdoor sprouted back on last year. I was only a few month old (on DG - that is --no pun intended!), I remember making post left and right to find out when everyone else's in the region has them coming back from the deep sleep over winter. lol.

Mine are still coming back, that little set back with the cold weather hasn't slowed them down one litte bit!!!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Ok, that come to show....a little zonal difference makes a HUGE difference! But, but EFG is in the same zone as mine! Sun vs. Shade? What's it?

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Actually Kim I believe that EFG may be in zone 8A that close to Macon, Ga.

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Yes, we are on the zone line. and I walk on the "edge" LOL will try almost anything. My brugs in 'pots' are in some tree shelter from the cold and wind, but get quite a lot of winter sun. (I put a lot of newspaper in the bottom so that may have kept them warmer. Hope this helps.

Actually where I live I don't do anything other than the usual mulch. If yours are coming back already you're doing very good!!!!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I've sown many seedlings this year, as an experiment I'll plant them out in various sites in the garden and see how they turn out. :-)
The west side in my garden looks good for brugs this time of year, but I afraid they'll be toasted during the height of summer?

I'm finding that a little shade during the hot months helps also!!!

Kim, those little babies are adorable! You are going to have a brug wonderland!

Here's a pic of MEM from yesterday.

And this is how it looked this afternoon. I was out there last night in the dark with a flashlight, on my hands and knees, with my face shoved up in that bloom. The neighbors were probably sitting on their porch watching me...
It has a light delicate fragrance that is very pleasant.

I had one bloom yesterday and today. It has a couple more blooms on it, and I will take a picture of it. It's the only one that I lost the tag off of.

Wow, MEM is adorable even she is quite young to produce flower! Congrats Cathy. Lucy, I'm looking forward to your blooms, since your zone is the leader now on brugs' growing season. I've gradually harden mine off from the greenhouse to outdoor. Will post mine when they make some headway.
Kim

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

Oooh, yes, please Lucy, I wanna see!
Looking forward to your pics too Kim :-)

Cathy she will be darker pink in summer

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

Cool, she will look really nice against the white picket fence!
Thanks Donna!

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Mine may be an MEM, also. It's kinda pink, sorta looks double, with curly little tentacles, or whatever you call them. lol

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

post a pics of it. I am trying to remeber the names of the brugs I sent out lol. Maybe I can ID it for you. MEM makes a huge bloom. I did send out Day Dreams and it is a double pink

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

I'll get a picture if one of the 2 buds has turned pink, tomorrow. I should have got the one yesterday but the night before, we had a hard rain, for a few mins, and it didn't look too good. Mud splashed on it, because the plant is so small.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Lucy I also sent Tiara a double white

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

I have the DD and the Tiara, marked, so it something else, I think. It's not white, I know that much. : )
