Donna ... that makes sense and would explain the root success of mine in water.

We'll all have to compare photos in the Spring/Summer of our Brugs from Donna. I'd love to see how they all look and what the blooms look like. I, too, don't mind sharing cuttings once my grow into trees and get bigger. (Hopefully next year!)

Does anyone know how well they grow from seed? I have some seeds and am curious about trying to grow them.

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

Becky, I ordered some seeds for B. sanguinea and one sprouted yesterday. It took about 24 days for it to germinate. I hope the other two come up.
It's the large sprout towards the top.
The little guys on the bottom are Calliandra eriophylla.

Cathy, did you have to use bottom heat for the seeding tray? That's cool, and thank for passing on the info.
Becky, I purchased 4 seedlings this early summer, the Dger sent me 2 bonus seedlings, the total half dozen seedling grew at an oustounishing speed. I first potted them up in 4" container, in no time I upgraded the pots, and they grew to be about 4 feet tall. Currently I'm overwinter them in my basement with extra light. They're doing well. I was fascinated as to how well the seedling will take off.

Kim, I used bottom heat on and off. We had a cool snap where the temps were in the 40's at night, so I put them on the heating pad (I'm sharing it with the seed tray until I get a real heat mat) at night, took them out in the sunlight during the day. Sometimes I left the heat on all day. It was like having another set of pets to take care of!
The whole lot of various seeds got all kinds of heat, cool, sun, shade , just about every condition possible. While I was away for 5 days, several things sprouted. Guess they were sick of me checking on them every hour on the weekends!
I'm glad to hear the seedlings grow fast ,maybe there will be blooms next summer- pushy, aren't I?

brugs grow great from seed and sometimes will even bloom the first year.

SV your B. sanguinea won't last long. They won't live in our heat and humidity. It might make it over winter but by summer it will die. Brug Aborea won't grow down south either. I even tried inside in the a/c in a sunny window. Our nights stay to hot that is why California and out west/up north can grow them. It may be 100 in the day but it will cool down to the 50's or 60's at night

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Wow, Donna, I'm glad to hear more info. about brugs. Is versicolor a san. brug?
I'll head out for Christmas Parade down town, bbl.
Kim

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

Oh the heartbreak! Well, maybe it will bloom before it expires. Thanks for the info Donna!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Versicolor is not a Sang. Versicolors loom white and change colors and usually have a very long stem that the bloom hangs from. A good example if Ecuador Pink.

SV if you get it through winter you might look to see if you can make a good trade for it in spring

Donna, just wanted to show you this beautiful MEM that came from your contest. I looked over my brug babies, wanting to plant one in the front bed, and this one just looked the healthiest, so I picked it up and found that it has two buds on it! I cannot wait until it blooms!
I lost 3 of the babies from the contest, sadly I think the Fafard soil mix I was using was just too soggy. (I've since tracked down a source for the ProMix I adore.)
But the other three (and the other cuttings I acquired not long after getting bitten by the BrugBug) are doing very nicely! I do believe Vixen is also pushing out a bud.
Counting the days till Miss Emily blooms...

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Cathy you are going to love MEM. Her blooms are absolutely Huge

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

That looks wonderful Cathy! Way to go!

The only ones of mine that didn't make it were the DD (which was a bummer because that was my favorite) and the MM. Everything else looks VERY healthy and ready to be repotted.

Donna, I'll think of you every time one of these babies bloom.
Kristi

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Cathy, I thought I had missed out on a contest...LOL Well,,, I did --last year. Looks like a healthy Mem,
Elaine

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

Kim, I'll be burning batteries waiting for her to bloom!
Donna, I just looked at MEM again in PlantFiles, I think I might wear that page out... One of the Rhapsody seeds sprouted, but so far that's the only one. I think they may have rotted rather than germinated.
Kristi, those were two that I lost also, Tiara was the third "survivor" of the mucky soil.
Elaine, I just had to resurrect this page so that we can share pics our babies! I went a little crazy and managed to acquire 22 different "flavors" of brugs and 2 NOIDs.
DH likes them too, so that's as good of an excuse as I can find!
Cathy

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Wow, I'm so excited for Cathy and Kristi, I on the other hand have lost DD and MM, but the rest are looking well. I'll post pic when mine making buds. Thanks again Donna and Kristi.
Kim

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

I'll post pictures of mine too just as soon as I see buds or the weather warms enough to plant them outside. Most all of mine are doing fine. A few will grow leaves then drop'em, then grow more, then drop'em again. So I'm crossing my fingers on those. Can't remember which ones are doing that without getting up and going in the kitchen to look. Next coffee break, though, I'll make note.
I'm so proud of them and want to say thank you again Donna and Kristi for sending them to me.

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Cathy,, 22 ?????????? Wow,, when you start taking cuttings, you will be nominated Ms Brug Queen and WIN,,,,LOL
Let me know when you start cutting please, would love to trade. I have a few...

Oh yes Elaine, I admit I went a little cuckoo, but I certainly won't have any regrets when I'm tripping over blooming brugs! I'm gradually putting them in the ground, so they will take off and I can take some cuttings and share the wealth! I guess from what I read that cuttings "take" better in the spring and summer rather than the fall.
Those two are beautiful!!! And I don't have either...

Athens, PA(Zone 5b)

Whooa Cathy! I thought I had the most cuttings between Elaine,Deborah, and The Donna Contest☺☺I am down to 8 survivors out of 14 but no buds......sigh...if love for the Brugs was enough,I'd have a hundred♥Way to go Cathy!!!!

Athens, PA(Zone 5b)

I have Brug seeds now from Kim too! Oh how I hope I can grow them successfully Kim!
What fun,fun,fun☺Zone envy here☺

Lu

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi Lu! Glad your 8 babies are still hanging tough, spring will be here soon!
Hopefully we'll get some good spring rains to really make these brug babies GROW, GROW, GROW!
Happy seed growing!!!
Cathy

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Thank goodness my "Donna" Brugs are still in my kitchen window. The two I have in my sunroom have spider mites on'em. Geezh. I told myself I'd take them outside today and repot, but my other self decide not to go.

Posyblossom, I've never grown Brugs from seeds. Be sure to keep up with the progress of those seeds. I'd like to hear about your success with'em.

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

LOL at your "other self!"
Mine don't always agree either!

Athens, PA(Zone 5b)

HAHAHA you fun folks! On that note,I am heading for bed to dream of Brugs Blooming and growing and blooming.

I will keep you and Kim posted on the progress of the seeds Deborah. It sounds as though you will all be pollinating and growing your own seeds from Brugs which I hope to get a chance at too. I have been reading how to manually pollinate a Brug and I think I can do it if I ever have blooms to try on.☺

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Deborah,, LOL,, my "other self" should stay inside and do some organizing, but when she came home from work, she just went right outside and started planting seeds..
Elaine

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Elaine, we are getting to the point in our lives we owe it to ourselves to do what we want when we want. Go on out there and play in the dirt, if you are too organized, you would be asking your other self where you filed it. Right?

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Yep,,, LMAO

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

This conversation, Elaine ... sounds a little like the movie "Me, Myself, and Irene" with Jim Carey! LOL! So which self usually wins? The gardener or the organizer? LOL!

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Guess??? bet you know the answer to that.
Nitey nite. Have to go work in Kindergarten tomorrow (not the teacher, though)
Elaine

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

Here's MEM today, she has 4 buds on her. I propped the largest bud up on a brick, since it is so long and the plant is so short. Can't wait until she opens up!

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Hi,,, and nitey nite..
Elaine

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Cathy my Mountain Magic expired also. :(( Miss Emily Mckinsey however is doing fairly well. Congrats to you with the buds on MEM.

I also lost DD, and got a replacement from another generous DGer.

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

Kim I lost that one too, and a couple others, but the rest are doing well. I hope this is our last cool night (OK, COLD to me), so they will all start growing faster!
