My questions is - What are the best indoor plants for providing oxygen and taking toxins out of the air and such? I have been reading that plants are good for this but have not been able to find consistent answers as to which plants are best. Thanks so much for taking time to look at this as I am new to growing plants and taking care of them. I am really enjoying what I have been doing so far. If you read this and wouldn't mind looking at my other post helping me to remember a name of a plant my grandma used to grow that would be awesome. Again thanks.
What are the best indoor plants?
aandmmom,
What level grower would you say you are? 0= total newbie, 10= expert in your field. (No degrees needed here, though...)
If you're a level 0, my recommendations would be things that are pretty easy to keep; most of the larger Sanseverias (snake plants), Chlorophytum (spider plants) and most of the more common, less fussy cacti. Wandering jews of all types are pretty easy, also. as well as Pothos and Heartleaf Philodendron.
Of course, then there's the issue of light- what type of light does your house get? If you're lucky enough to have a lot of good natural sun, then there's a lot more to recommend. If not, there's always light tables.
You could use the winter to do research on what you'd like to grow, and see if anyone here has extras they could trade with you. (A lot of people are willing to send plants for just the postage they cost to send.) I know I'm already propagating a lot of offshoots to get ready for next trading season! Some of the packages are already designed just for newbies- every plant is common, so most of the experienced growers have them, but they're a great way for someone brand new to start with.
As for what plants clean air the best, you might want to check out NASA's site. I think they have a list of the best plant air cleaners.
Hope this rambling answer helps!
Marsha.
(PS, I did check your thread about your grandma's plant. Would you happen to have any pictures at all- even old black and white ones that could be scanned? A picture is truly worth a thousand words...)
