Help......someone took a saw to my Japanese Maple!!!

Norfolk, VA

I walked outside today only to find that someone had taken a saw to my JM. The tree will survive but my question is...can I root the limbs that were cut from it? If so, how do I go about doing this? Thankyou to anyone that can help.

Unfortunately you can't usually root a tree from cut limbs. In order to root a cutting from a japanese maple you would typically cut 4-6 inch pieces just from the current year's growth and stick it into a perlite-sand mix. That's the extremely simplified instructions. You'd need to do some research for the specifics. It can be pretty difficult depending on the cultivar... At any rate, I'm so sorry to hear about your poor tree.

thankyou. i will do some more research and see if any good can come from this.

thankyou julie. yea i would say vandalism.....it happened sometime after we went to bed. from what i've seen, i won't be able to get the limbs to root but i'll try anyway. never know, i might luck out. when i originally bought the tree it was just a stick with one leaf and looked almost dead. got it for $10.....i brought it home, potted it up and have babied it ever since. it is now a beautiful tree that is 9-10 foot tall. it broke my heart when i found the limbs had been cut from it.

What!?!? I can't believe the nerve of some people! I want to pass along my sympathy to you, as well.

I am so sorry for you. I would be so livid, I might have a heart attach. I'd say I hope you find out who did it, but I don't know if that would help you or just make things worse. Anyway, I hope you can get past the fact that you've been victimized by a total jerk and keep your yard and it's belongings protected from now on.

Good Luck :)

Thankyou to everyone. I am still upset over this but have come to the realization that there is nothing that can be done. Fortunately, my JM will survive and I am grateful for that.
Wow digger, 300 for foot stock? you must have quite a collection!

Hope the holidays are good for all of you, and thankyou again for your thoughtfulness.
