lbjnflower,
Some seeds have a hard seedcoat and when you nick, clip, file the seedcoat and then soak the seed in water it helps break the dormancy and speeds up germination. With the datura, I just use baby nail clippers and carefully take a tiny nip out of the hard coat and then soak overnight. Larger seeds such as Lotus and Ipomomea were easier for me to do with a file.

The below site has great germination info.

If you are new to seed sprouting, try something a little easier than clematis. These have a double dormancy and require 2-3 years to germinate.

Ibjnflower: The Sweet Autumn Clematis, is an easy germinator as clematis go. Put your clematis seeds in the freezer and bring out when you want to plant. This simulates mother natures winter. When ready to plant, lay your seeds on moist soil, cover lightly with soil. Then cover with saran wrap or plastic bag, until they sprout, then remove the plastic covering.
Datura's need light to germinate, so after soaking, if your planting inside, I take the eraser end of a pencil--make an indentation in the soil, place the datura seed in the indentation, press seed down with sharpened end of pencil to make sure it has contact with the soil. Cover with plastic and set where it can get bright light. Seeds start to germinate for me in 2 to 3 weeks.
If your planting directly outside, lay seeds on moist ground, press seeds down, you can cover seeds very lightly with soil outside, keep moist.
Just jump in and go for it.
