What is your most unusual container

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Ummmm...I just might put a "rhinestone" barette on mine! La tee da!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

lol! just found a baby head http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=8090431
may have to do one for my new grandson!

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Oneanji! It's adorable...but did you see the size? It's like 2 1/2 inches wide and tall! Nah, that can't be! It's really cute and they just had to have made a mistake on size!

Kat

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

well, maybe I can plant a lil plug in it :) my grandson only has peach fuzz for hair right now, so maybe I could just stick a peach in it and be okay for now! LOL

Pass Christian, MS(Zone 8b)

KatG~love the "sister" grouping!!
oneanjl~that baby planter is sooo cute.

Found some more "head planter" sources if anyone is interested.

Hi Gardenerkett! So many heads, so little time.......

Or, for Minnesotans, so many heads, NO hardy plants..... actually, temps hit 36 degrees here yesterday - out of the deep freeze!!

Ballard Designs has mailed my heads! HURRAY! (wait a minute, that sounds a little...off.....lol!) Will be working on all of your instructions on pic posting. Angel, please post some pics too!

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks Gardner for the links. I did see some of these on my mission to find heads! The only thing is that they state shipping time of 4-8 weeks on the Ballacor heads and when I see something good, I don't want to wait. The Charleston garden ones are gorgeous, but $$$!

Poor Muddylou...Spring is just around the corner!

Pass Christian, MS(Zone 8b)

KatG~wow, I did not realize they took so long, you would think they could make them from scratch in that much time!
and yes, a bit pricey!! I was just excited to actually find some more!
Happy Spring head dressing everyone!

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Gardner...I was so excited to find them, I nearly bought the Charleston Garden one...was glad to find Ballard at a substantial savings, Gotta say though, that the one from Charleston Gardens is really beautiful! Sometimes they have too much hair molded in though...Isn't the entire idea to have your own hair???

I have 4 planted heads now and my guy emailed me the other morning after being here and seeing the project unfold, and the subject was: Queen of Pot heads! hahahahaha. I'm not sure that's a very reputable title! LOL!

Pass Christian, MS(Zone 8b)

KatG~Your guy sounds like he has a great sense of humour!

Well, I got my boy head today!! and do they ever do a good job of packing!
Could only manage a bit of juncus spirales, so he's sporting a bit of a messy comb over, for now.
But I think they look cute together!

what is the long string like plant in the hair on head on the left? you did a great job!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

lol! A match made in 'garden' :)

Pass Christian, MS(Zone 8b)

They do look kinda cosy, don't they
The plant is jancus spirales, its the best I had right now.

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

OMG! Garnerkett! You are too much!!! I LOVE your Boy! He's great!

Yeah...were you tired after you finally unpacked him? hehe? Like, what's up with all the packaging? All that green paper and boxes within boxes. But obviously was a real good thing though, as we have intact heads! haha

I just Love mine! Thank-you for the inspiration!

I really love the closeness of your two also...Unfortunately "dreadlock guy" can't pick a woman out of the three! He's fickle! hehe

I had my dear friend come over tonight and introduced her to the "head family". She thought they were really cool! Other people though kind of question my sanity. Hahaha! I just get such a laugh everytime I pass them!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I have a bedpan with some hens and chicks in.

Pass Christian, MS(Zone 8b)

2pugdogs~lets see some pics, sounds like it would be cute! I am assuming the hens and chicks are plants?:~)

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I don't know if I have a picture, but I will look for it. Yes the hen and chicks is a plant.

This is my head container - the planting reminds me of a pretty hat!

gg~That is so cool! Where did you ever find it!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

I thought mine was unusual, but being that so many have head planters, I guess not. Anywho, I present to you Vertumnus, the god of the changing seasons. mgh is the godmother and she named him for me.

He is known as Vertie in TX, lest he be beat up by the local bullies with a name like Vertumnus....

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=3175785
this is an old pic, his hair has grown quite a bit and he refuses to get a haircut. I think it comes from hanging around the bullies. His hair is lysimachia and cury liriope.

Gardnerkett - I got my head (or half head, I guess!) container at Urban Gardener, here in atlanta. They also have them at Habersham Gardens in Atlanta. This is the larger one, they also have a smaller one.

And........I think my husband saw a terra cotta one at Four Seasons pottery in Roswell!

So they are pretty easy to find. Here is another photo

gg~your are so lucky, looks like a great garden center - Urban Gardener. I checked out their website to see if I could order the planter, but could not find it, oh well:~( I will keep looking locally.
http://www.theurbangardener.com/index.php

But they look like they carry the Mr. Landscaper Drip Irrigation System, which is what I use to keep my containers watered in the summer and while I am away.

vossner~great Verti head (and cute story!! LOL) I am sure it looks great now that its a bit longer!

Greensburg, PA

Kat,

Your rhipsalis looks like it might be a capillaformis. I have one of those and it is what originally gave me the idea for my heads. It's in a hangng pot and every time I look at it it reminds me of green hair. I was afraid to move mine (and it was too big for the head planter). Your's is absolutely great.

BTW, I got my heads for $8 each at the local nursery on discount. Nobody wanted them but I had to have them the moment I saw them.

Lot's of great pics here. I've been out of touch for awhile and it was great to see them. I'll try to respond to the other posts over the next few weeks and also hope to post a couple more pics.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

This is sort of a container and definitely unusual. We found a couple of these large wire storks and are going to use them for bean and cucumber trellises. I love the idea of gardening + fun. Hope you enjoy my idea,

i do like your idea--is that what they are sold for?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

No, it was just a decorative item?? at HomeGoods. You could also topiary them. I also like the idea of pretty veggie and flower mixed gardens. There were only two or I would have an entire flock.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

not terribly unusual, but I was enchanted by this one and just had to have it, an iron teacup

Great ideas everybody! I suppose you can basically use anything you want to make an interesting container! I just love the moss filled forms - I've got a flamingo and I need to do something with him this year!

Here's an update on the "girls" hahaha. The Bacopa is really working out good for hair! We'lll need a trim soon! haha.

I'm telling you, these the funnest things you could ever grow! When I tell my friends about them, they're like rolling their eyes and thinking "omg the poor woman is now planting chia heads!" When they see them, they're just blown away because they're just so cute and they want one! I've already made a couple for gifts...

Next week: NECKLACES! haha

I've enjoyed this thread more than anyone will ever know. Shopping for some heads this spring and plants to use will be so much fun. I do have an old broken brass/metal/rusted standing lamp base that I'd like to make into a tall planter for one of my shade gardens. Maybe mixup some live moss brew to grow on it and use some of these plant ideas too!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

here is today's pic of Vertie. He's turning into such a hippie w/ that long hair.
