Gardnerkett: I need Head's! hahahaha. I like your's a lot, where did you find it? I'm looking at this rack of hairy plants I have and wouldn't it be cool to have an entire rack of heads??? haha. If I can divide the Rhipsalis...would you like some?

KatG - that stand is so beautiful!

Pass Christian, MS(Zone 8b)

KatG - I picked up my head in a little nursery in Fairhope, AL. Preast's Petals & Pottery 251-928-6073. If you call them they may be able to send you one. They tell me there is a male and female, so I am going back again to get the set! - They carry the most wonderful collection of Orchids as well.
I would love some of your Rhipsalis for "another look"!! - Have you potted your beverage stand yet?

Pass Christian, MS(Zone 8b)

Found another fun container today, thought it was too cute!

It's amazing what works for a pot. Here is one I had a few years ago. I called him Rad Man.

hcmc~he is very Rad! Perfect hair.

New Orleans, LA(Zone 8b)

Rad man. . .so cool.

Not very unusual, but I couldn't pass up on these chimineas for $2 a piece. Bought some succulents for them. I haven't potted them up, but what do you think?

karma~great idea, I like that!
Al~that is so cute, and tiny, what is it planted in?

New Orleans, LA(Zone 8b)

Thanks Cath. I wonder if Al's is in some sort of nut??? That is unusual alright!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

It's a portulacaria growing in a white oak acorn cap.

Spring is getting closer, so I had a dream I bought some cool old purses from the goodwill and planted and hung them on my privacy fence! lol gonna hafta try that!

Plano, TX

al-will that grow like a bonsai? will the small container stunt the root growth and let it stay in the little cap? it is so pretty and delicate--where do you keep it?

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

It grows very slowly (because of the root constriction) under lights, but you can see it's perfectly happy. ;o) I have a wick that you cannot see that hangs below the cap and through a grid, contacting a small capillary mat I wet daily (w/deionized water) to supply moisture. It's kind of a novelty thing I do to display with other plants (usually bonsai) at club events or other plant related gatherings. The acorn caps last about a year - 18 months before they fall apart (rot).

Plano, TX

i never thought of how hard it would be to water! i can understand the reason for the wick--that really is a novelty--must make your bonsai actually look large!!

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

.... makes almost ANYTHING look large. ;o)

I didn't see whether you were able to find out how to do the topiary with creeping fig, but I can explain how mine was constructed. It was an angel topiary that was already made up when I got it, a shaped wire frame, surrounded on the inside of the frame with sheet moss, filled with a mixture of peat moss and potting soil--more peat I think, based on the weight when it was dry. The whole form was liberally wrapped round with fishing monofilament, then the fig plants were teased apart and inserted in holes in the sheet moss. There were little U-shaped pins to hold the fig on the frame and direct the creepers where you wanted it to root. It was no time at all--maybe 12 weeks--before the topiary was completely covered and wanting regular haircuts. The most difficult thing was keeping it watered. You need to dunk it in a tub and keep it there until it gets well soaked, otherwise the water runs right off it like a duck's back. Eventually, I went on vacation and the topiary was like a bowling ball when I got back--hard as a rock and the figgys were dried out. I think I kept the frame hoping to re-do it, but just never got around to it. The frame is long gone.

After seeing your gorgeous head planter, you sure put me on a mission to find some! I spent many a late night combing the internet for "head planters"...hahaha. They're hard to find!

I finally found these two and I burst out laughing when I finally planted them today! They make me laugh, everytime I look at them! The old grumpy guy with the "dreadlocks" and the lady with the perfect rhipsalis hair! LOVE THEM!!! I think I'm going to order another couple lady heads as they'll never look the same with different plants!

Thank-you so much for the idea! You're very clever!

By the way...the guy is on sale right now at Ballard Designs for $34.99. (reg. $69.00).

I need to name my planters and when I look at the side view photo of the lady I think of Farrah with her shag haircut! The guy reminds me of Woody Harrelson (Cheers) with Dreadlocks! What do you think? haha!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

I love your heads!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

You did a great job. I love grouchy looking sedum head!

Pass Christian, MS(Zone 8b)

KatG~fantastic! those are great heads, and thanks for the net link!
That sedum dreadlock look is perfect - suits "mr happy" to a tee!
The rhipsalis is so perfect, I must get some for my head collection. I was thinking of creating a section in my garden with 5-6 (heads) on columns and call it the "wig shop" - what do you think?
So happy there are others out there with a quirky gardening sense~~:~))

Plano, TX

oh you did great with those heads! the dreadlocks are something else!! just love them both--when you ordered the pots wasn't it expensive for shipping? seems they would be heavy

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Thank-you all! I think they're adorable too! I actually ordered two more lady heads! This can be a real experiment - pixie cut, spiked rocker head, the sky is the limit!

Planolinda...I was surprised by the shipping cost because they weighed a ton. $17.00 for both. Ordered them on a Sunday and had them on Wednesday. Great service too! The packaging was crazy though. I was tired by the time I got the Male opened. Boxes inside of Boxes and tons of paper and tape! Well, I guess I shouldn't complain as everything arrived in one piece!

Sounds like it would be great in the window of a beauty parlor.

Pass Christian, MS(Zone 8b)

They would be perfect for a beauty salon!

Order'd my "Mr. Happy" today, thanks for the link to the site ~ KatG.
Lots of interesting stuff. Thought the faux log planter was kinda fun!

Where can I buy these "head planters" you speak of? ; )

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

They really are wonderful. I've been checking my sedums and so many seem ideal for the hair, just as KatG used for the grouchy man. I'd love to see more of them planted with sedum 'Ogon' and 'Angelina'.

This is 'Ogon'.

just found this thread... all of these are just great

Pass Christian, MS(Zone 8b)

jlp~see KatG's note above, she found them at www.ballarddesigns.com, online. I found my first one in a garden store in Fairhope AB. - will be looking for more though!
pirl~that Ogon, looks perfect, I will be on the lookout for some this spring.

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Pirl...That would be great for hair! I've never seen Ogon, but will also keep a look out for it! I just got two more Lady heads that I have to plant! I can just see myself walking out in my garden in the dark at night and thinking...who are these people! Hahahaha! Or...when I have a party and my guest's start talking to them! They are just too fun!

Kat

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

The other one that might give a Shirley Temple effect is 'Angelina'.

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Pirl...that is cool! Where are you finding these great succulents? I'm thinking that I have a ton of Artillery fern growiing around here. Kind of same color/growth etc.. Could give the look of a "perm gone bad" hahahahaha!

Thumbnail by KatG
Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Asparagus fern would look really "Kooky" hehe

Thumbnail by KatG
Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

I also have a couple of big containers of this Foxtail fern that just grows like crazy. Now would this just not make for the "ultimate punk rocker"? LOL. This pic is a few month old and it's doubled in size and needs to be thinned out...Sunday's my day to work outside. Can't wait!
