What is your most unusual container

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Both of those are great. I wonder how Blackie SPV would do - it might get too leggy.

How about a body for the female?

OK, just discovered this thread and have ALREADY gone to Ballard Designs and purchased Grumpy Guy, Lady Head, AND the faux bois planter. And it's not even 9 am yet!! You guys are a bad influence on me! lol! Seriously, the head planters are soooooooo funny. I've actually already got a head planter (found it years ago in New Orleans - there used to be this wonderful cast cement store right in the Quarter but it's sadly long gone) but now I have some great ideas for it, thanks to you. Only problem is, there will be NO planting for me until the temps here rise a bit - still sub-zeros - siiiigggghhhhhhh. Keep those pictures coming! (I'd add a picture of the New Orleans head but I have no idea how to add pics - sad but true).

Saint Paul, MN(Zone 4a)

Just ran a "head planter" search on Ebay. Not much there. Most of the items are the small ceramic lady heads with hats vases from the 1940s and 1950s. There was one buddha head that had some possibilities - once in Ebay (www.ebay.com), search either "head planters" or "buddha head planter". I'm going to pass on him, as I've already visited Ballard Designs this morning! But KatG is right: these head planters are rawther scarce!

Saint Paul, MN(Zone 4a)

There's some nice head planters at www.dsgardenshop.com, there's even a "head planter" category (look at the menu on the left hand side of the page). Go figure....

I am going to check out Hobby Lobby when I am well enough to leave the house.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Amazing what can be done with a 2 pound coffee can. Look at all these heads:

Wow! I hope she posted they way she made those!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

In the thread Gourd said scooterbug had posted about them in her thread.

Pirl...Love the body! hehe. Yes, I think Blackie would do well. I went to Lowes today and picked up a couple of unusual succulents - One might make a cute "tiara" hahaha. Hopefully the weather will hold out tomorrow as I'm hoping to finally get out there and do some serious gardening. My Guy is looking forward to it also, as it's a great way for us to spend the day together! He's a CPA and these days is so under stress...but he also grew up farming so this is his genuine enjoyment! Hey...he can spend as much time doing things in my yard as he wants! haha

You are too funny Muddylou! You sound like me when I first seen GardnerKetts head! OMG...I was on a mission and yes, did the Ebay thing and also seen the ones on dsgardenshop! The Ballard ones seemed the best to me and I'm glad you ordered them! I don't think you'll be dissapointed. I also love the faux bois planters! They're too cute! Shipping was fairly reasonable I thought for such heavy items!
Have fun! They really are enjoyable!

Muddylou...It's really easy to add photo's if you currently have them on your computer. Just press Browse and find your photo and press send. I'd love to see your head! haha

Is the faux bois planter sold out? I can't find it on the Ballard Designs site.

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

I'm still seeing it...try this link Happy!'

I'm so tempted to order the Faux Bois Log Planter - but hopefully it will go on sale one of these days! It's nearly 5 feet long!

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, KatG -- I don't know why I wasn't able to pull it up.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Couldn't a similar planter be made with part of a downed tree?

Saint Paul, MN(Zone 4a)

Hullo Everyone! I was so inspired by all of this head planter talk that I went shopping for something more hair-like to put in the old New Orleans head planter (BTW, THANKS to all for the technical & emotional support regarding posting photos! I hope to attempt it someday soon! LOL). Ended up with a spiky hairdo. Not sure it works. Hmmmmm. Back to the garden store (throw me into the briar patch....). Thoughts for good "hair": baby tears or that "string of pearls" succulent (could make your planter look like she/he needs a good hairwashing).

Pirl, I do think that a very cool planter could be made with a real tree. I've been thinking of doing exactly that with some HUGE tree trunks up at our cabin on Lake Superior. I've been thinking about sticking sempervivums (chickens & hens) in all the crevices - love that texture. The real logs will ultimately rot though, unless you find some sort of preservative. Have you seen in the latest Pottery Barn catalogs that they are selling sections of (hopefully) preserved logs as end tables (for a couple hundred dollars!)? Very cool looking in the right room.

KatG, I am seriously eye-ing that huge faux bois log planter on Ballard Designs....it would be perfect in cabin-land....only problem is keeping it watered when we're only up there every other weekend or so.....I LOVE it though.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

How about planting the log with water crystals. You could do sempervivums in pots, with crystals, and they'd probably love it. It would still take years for that log to decay. I have stumps that still isn't decayed after 15 years.

I found this at the beach in January of 2006.

Then I put plants inside the hollowed out driftwood.

Pirl, wow, that driftwood is gorgeous. Your container combinations are beautiful as well.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks. It was prettier this past summer when I added two tree roses to the area.

Pass Christian, MS(Zone 8b)

pirl~that log planter is just beautiful!
muddy~I had the same problem with keeping planters watered, as we travel alot. I picked up a kit from Lowes that you hook up to your hose, comes with about a dozen little drip heads. Put a timer on the main hose and then hooked up the watering system, works really well. Set it to about 5 min a day. I have about 4 sets of them around the house.
I found it in the underground sprinkler section of Lowes.
I will try and find the name and repost.

Plano, TX

that drift wood is so pretty--since i live inland and no driftwood comes my way i once bought some old peices at an estate sale--the woman said they were from her mothers collection and were worth a lot of money but of course she was selling--is old drift wood any more valued than any drift wood? does age matterf?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I've never tried to sell it so I wouldn't know. There was a driftwood collection at a museum on Prince Edward Island that was very interesting.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi everyone! I'm new here and I love your containers! Might have to go find my own head to plant :)
I use rain bird drip sprinklers for patios and for our veggie garden. they cost about $40 for each system and it came with a tmer and all the stuff to set them up. lowes and home depot have them. The only downfall for me has been if one of the lines gets a clog, you dont notice until the plant starts screaming "water me"! so I would say keep a close eye on the moisture level of each plant.

Keep all the wonderful pictures coming! I'm a visual person and this site is better than any of those magazines I was reading before ! LOL
Anjl

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Welcome, oneangl! Glad to have you here. DG really is so much better than magazines because we can ask each other how something was done or ask for ideas. It's so nice that people are so willing to help.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks,
Hey will this work for hair? http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/63687/

I can see it now on my fron porch....:) just gotta find a head :)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Great!

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Pirl...I LOVE your driftwood planters! And yes Oneanjl - You do have to buy a head! haha. After seeing GardnerKetts, it became a mission!

They are fun though!

Here's my latest additions that I planted today.

This is the "Queen"...I don't know what kind of succulents these are, but I thought the one looked like a crown! LOL

And here's the three sisters together! It's typical isn't it. All different and there's always got to be one "flamboyant" one in the group! hehehe

Plano, TX

you really did great with those!! someone was selling heads on classifieds in dave's garden --very different from your heads but very interesting too--did you see them? they are like porcelin doll heads

Saint Paul, MN(Zone 4a)

WOW y'all have been bizzy today!! KatG - LOVE the new heads! Still laughing! I am 1 of 3 sisters & you've got us nailed- I'm the flamboyant one! ; ) Pirl, your driftwood planter is to DIE. Lake Superior produces a lot of driftwood so I've got a new project! LOVELY!

Hello PlanoLinda! I'm pretty sure that there is no particular price difference between "old" & "new" driftwood. I'd absolutely love to be wrong though, as there's tons of it along the North Shore....

Anjl - (angel?) - I love silver falls dichondra - I had several big pots with it last summer (it was the skirt for pennisetum rubrum) & it was gorgeous; even rooted AROUND my pots & kept spreading - PERFECT for "hair" - but plan on spending lots of time in the salon for trims! Grows like a weed. It's a little difficult to find here on the tundra so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this summer....cannot do without it now!

THANKS to all for the watering ideas - the water crystals are GREAT & I will not do containers without them. Too lazy!

Saint Paul, MN(Zone 4a)

BTW, Anjl, Ballard Designs has the Grumpy Man head & Lady head that KatG has used above....www.ballarddesigns.com....I just ordered them too....I bet Ballard is wondering why there's a "head" run..... they really should send a gift certificate to KatG!

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

Lol! I was thinking the same thing 'head run'after reading these posts! I've spent alot of money lately, so want to see if I can find something local instead of paying shipping costs. Sick in bed this weekend, but as soon as I'm able, I'll be out head-hunting! My DH loved the idea!
I have tried to find silver falls here, but to no avail, so now I will try seed swapping-just as soon as my seeds arrive :) I saw the silver falls on another thread and fell in love with them! then I saw this thread and now I HAVE to have them ! lol!

Anjl (yes angel-old-old name-from back when I was an angel o

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Angel - I think Park's Seed Co. carries the seed for dichondra.

Kat - your heads are great and proof that many heads are better than one. Love all the do's you've given them. The one new gal almost looks like she has a Mohawk in the center. You really do both the men and women so well. The guys always seem to look like Roman emporers but the gals look current - maybe they like the "older" men.

Muddy - I'm one of three girls, too, and I'm also flamboyant compared to the other two.

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

It really is too funny! Sisters! Personally, I only have my soul sisters and those ones tend to be similar to me. However, I've seen so many families where the kids are so different. Love this portrait though...You've got the earthy hippy-don't have a care in the world one, The Princess...and the fashion maven! It's so true!

Okay...I better get back to real life and stop thinking about "heads". People who know me are going to think I've lost my head...but no, I've gained 4 more! haha

Kat

you all just gave me an idea! I have 3 sisters (all 4 of us have very diferent personalities ) and I have 4 daughters with different personalities...hmm thats 8 different heads! LOL guess I have alot of head hunting to do!

I will definitely check out Parks seed co for the silver falls. I need something I can put in a pony tail for 'my' head! :0)

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

OMG Oneanjl! You're going to be a busy gal! That really would be so cute though! After you get them all done, you have to invite them all over and have a "Head Party". See if they can figure out who they are! HA!

(ah...a pony tail??? Now your making me jealous! hahaha)
