That's getting a jump on the season, JD! x, C
Scattelogical ramblings and desultory humor - Epilogue
hey...
be nice to us vegetarians (or fishitarians in my case)!
last year, Eric and i brought a Quorn "turkey roast" to Thanksgiving, and everybody tried it, and liked it - it went quickly - maybe it was the novelty.
We may have Thanksgiving just for us here this year (we'll see his folks in Brooklyn on Friday, his brother has to work), and do what i have done in the past - make a Thanksgiving of food we are actually thankful for! (Who needs turkey and stuffing and pumpkin pie - the possibilities are endless...) I'd be really thankful if i could get shark here, but it never seems to happen. Why could i get shark at any supermarket in St. Louis, but not in CT? (i don't think the sharks came from the Missisippi!) One year when i was living in NYC, i got Moon Pies for everyone cause you couldn't buy them there.
I don't celebrate Thanksgiving, but I always cook a turkey for the cats. The Safeway sent a free turkey in last week's delivery, so the cats already had their Thanksgiving. If Safeway sends a free ham in next week's delivery, they'll have their Christmas early too.
I always have the traditional Thanksgiving shark.
: P
this is the random thread, is it not?
My family will be in for quite the surprise when I serve them up with a nice roasted and stuffed Possum this year.
If Granny Clampett can do it, why not?
I once tried to catch a shark off of Woods Hole. It was HUGE and this music would start playing every time it came around.....
Just teasing Amy. I'm very non-carnivour tolerant.
Stuffed lettuce will be the feature here. With 80 heads of it growing I have to be thankful and use it.
We're having turkey and all the fixin's. Not cooked by me though. DD#1 has the honors this year cause I'm having surgery on Tuesday. I will be in "la-la" land for a few days according to DD#1. I planned that well - don't have to cook or clean up. But I have to pay up $$. We're going grocery shopping today to buy all of the food. I can't lift or do much of anything for 6 weeks so my holiday shopping is all done except for "Heifer Project" which is one of my favorite charities and that is done on-line and I can lift my credit card. We're only buying for Colin this year and the adults aren't exchanging presents. My kids don't have any money and they told me I've already spent enough on them so it's going to be low key this year. More of enjoying the family and church events and less emphasis on the presents. (Never really placed much emphasis on them anyway) And since I can't do anything for 6 weeks I had to put up my decorations this weekend if I was going to have any. I'm just hoping no one comes to the house between now and after Thanksgiving. (Shh, don't tell anyone I'm rushing the season - oopps, I just did) I didn't put any outside yet, but I'll make someone else do that when it's a more appropriate time. Eleanor
Eleanor - my favorite sister and I often buy gifts from organizations like the Heifer Project, too. I was just trying to decide whether to buy a goat for Hati or a bicycle for a girl in India for my nephew's family this year! I'm thinking about a gift for myself, too - my $25 will buy $325 worth of clothing, school supplies, etc. for a NYC inner city child. What could be a better present - no wrapping, no dusting and good karma!
Yankee - and helps someone in need!! Eleanor
Very nice ladies. Holidays are time for giving. Good luck with your surgery, Eleanor!
have y'all heard about the give one/get one laptop for every child project? http://www.laptopgiving.org/en/index.php
My DH, who writes software - often for unconventional gadgets - ordered one the 1st day they were available. (i guess it isn't exactly a Xmas gift, cause he is keeping his to play around with, but it will surely be a welcome gift for whatever child gets the other one!) It is really a cool thing - we saw a video feature on it - they can only be ordered until November 26...
Amy - such a great idea. They are so expensive and there are so many families that can't afford them. Now days kids really need them for school. Eleanor
There was a great deal of work that went into designing these laptops - they are built especially for children in developing countries - who may lack access to things we take for granted like electricity, telephones, and libraries. And they only cost $200.
They use solar power? Right?
soular power! right on!
they have a built-in solar panel, and the battery can also be re-charged by turning a crank.
it is really a cool idea!
But I'm not sure they would be suitable for a US DGer -- x C
Eleanor, I hope your surgery and the recovery go very well. Be sure to let us know how you are doing when you feel up to it!
Believe it or not, our neighbors across the street have had Christmas lights outside and a Christmas tree lighted since Halloween! My DH has a plan to decorate the tall, skinny palm tree in our front yard somehow.......I'll try to capture it if I can. This is our first Christmas here, so it should be interesting, since we usually cut down our tree in New England. Of course, all of my Christmas's as a child and teenager were right here (usually sunbathing in the back yard on Christmas day as a clueless teenager!) and my Mother mortified me one year with a gawdy tin-foil tree and a revolving color spotlight on it. It was HORRID!!! What was worse - my Dad designed and built our house to have one end that was all glass. Of course the multi-colored tin tree was front and center where EVERYONE could see it turning colors. Terrible!
I have already set my table for Thanksgiving dinner because I love the colorful table this time of year. I also set my Christmas table way ahead with Christmas china that was a gift from a close friend - one piece at a time - for years. It reminds me of her and I use the table as a holiday decoration. I just took a photo of my table to show y'all (that's southern for "DG pals"). LOL
Very pretty Louise. Small gathering?
Louise - the table setting is beautiful. I remember as a kid I helped my mother set the table with the good china for holiday dinners - usually the day before. Everything had to be just right with the table ware and glasses in the correct place. I was so careful not to break any of the dishes. Our table(s) for family dinners occupied at least two rooms to accomodate about 30 people. Thanks for the well wishes for my surgery. The surgery is Tuesday at Albany Med. and I might be able to come home that night if I behave myself!! If not I'll have to wait until Wednesday. Eleanor
Wow! What beautiful dishes! Are they Imari?
Eleanor:
Did I miss the reason for your surgery? If so, I'm sorry, and I hope all goes well for you. You certainly have a positive outlook about it, and that will help a lot!!
Louise:
Great looking table. I love the colors!!
Thanks, Everbody......Yes, Zuzu, they are Takahashi Imari....our tradition for every Thanksgiving for almost 30 years. I'm very relieved that they weren't smashed or stolen when our house here was broken into. Good eye, ZuZu!!
Victor - yes, our number for dinner will be quite small this year, but we are going over to join my niece and nephews for dessert. We opted to stay home for dinner and will have our traditional meal and football. Will you be having a huge family gathering?
I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving! And Eleanor.....best of luck!! Heal quickly!!
We'll have about 12 people. That's enough!
Sounds like a good time, Victor! Enjoy! Who will cook the turkey??
The Mrs.
I'm guessing that your role is to be the life of the party??? And the clean-up guy???
"The Mrs." he said...in a DEEP manly voice !
I would love a clean up guy.
The meals I would make on a daily basis if someone cleaned up after me!
Pretty much, Louise! Sometimes I can be a turkey. JD, you're correct - my Adam's Apple bounced off my knee when I said that.
Yeah, Deb - I have a clean-up guy.........makes it much nicer to be the Cookin' Gal!!
JD - are you the cook or the clean-up guy? Or just the vivacious host???? Deb needs a clean-up guy........who's volunteering????
I can't complain, DH does a lot of other stuff for me, spoils me pretty well!
I need a DH - we've been over this I think.
Al, if you sold some of your winning photos, you could afford a clean-up guy.........really!! You've got what it takes there!! Congrats!
Thanks Louise. I'm not above selling out.
Isn't that how you won?!! Hee hee.
DB...I'm definitely not the cook...usually the clean up guy, as long as there is a dishwasher installed.
