Since I have started to identify several items in my new yard, I want to write it all down somewhere. Do you all keep a notebook of information, or keep it on your computer? Do you take pictures or write descriptions?
question about keeping gardening notes
I do a combination of all 3 things.
For perennials and daylilies, I write a description on a 3 X 5 index card which has all the info about that particular cultivar on it: The name, how tall it gets, when it blooms, and a description of the location it is planted, as well as a picture of it (usually from a catalog). These cards go in a file box I can take outside with me when I'm gardening. (It's easier than running into the house and getting on the computer)
I have a notebook with drawings in it which show different areas and where bulbs are planted so I don't accidentally dig them up when they're dormant.
Pictures of everything are on the computer.
Once you get more familiar with your space, you'll just automatically know where and what things are.
It is definitely a good idea to keep a "journal" of what you plant, and when...this way you can refer to it for the next season and adjust your planting times, and record how things did (or DIDN'T do...LOL ). It saves making the same mistake(s) again.
Another helpful thing to do (until you get more familiar with what you have) is to buy (or make) plant markers and put them with the various plants. That way, the name is right there in front of you when you need it.
I use the journal and blog here on DG (if you're not familiar with them, they're under "My Tools") The journal is a good place to keep track of the individual plants in your garden, and the blog is a good place to keep track of general notes about what you did in the garden on what day, take pictures of beds in different seasons, etc. If you need help getting started, there's a forum called DG Journals and Diaries and there are a couple threads in there to help you get started, or you can post questions if you have trouble with something. (the blog used to be called the diary, so in most of the posts over there it's called the diary. It's exactly the same thing, only the name changed)
I keep records both by hand and on the computer. I take my notebook with me in the garden and take a moment to make notes and reminders to myself of things that need doing, how other things are doing, what is not doing so well and what it looks like.
With hubby's help this spring, I took the trouble to draw out the entire yard on paper. I've been wanting to do some addtional landscaping, but this has really helped me get focused. Since we have all the measurements that has made it much easier to see which of my "dream landscape plans" will fit well.
