small square bed

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8a)

I took out concrete stepsfrom in front of the porch and redid the porch (or deck) , put new steps on other end. and when I was done, I ended up with a square area that runs into borders.
What do you put in square beds. Need some evergreens and flowers. It's pretty shady, but does get some afternoon sun. I have hostas everywhere, so would like to maybe leave them out.
So glad to find you all. I do a bad job knowing what to put where so usually end up disappointed with beds

HI Loraine, sorry you are having trouble with the planting of beds, maybe you are just selecting the wrong plants for you soil conditions or temp, even sun/shade, but anyway, there is no need to end up with just square beds if you can alter the shape by adding borders or removing grass or whatever this square is set into, why not try to take a walk around your local gardens, see what grows well in your neighbours gardens and try to copy these colours or plants, it is also possible that there has not been enough nutrients added to your soil because you say you have loads of
Hostas, these can survive for years in poorish soil as long as they get enough water, so to save further disappointments from other plants and flowers, I would do a soil check to find out what your soil lacks, add as much compost/animal manure as you can get dug into your soil to build it up and add goodness to it, you also need to feed your plants each year so they can build up a good root system, as for your square bed, lay your garden hose around this area, bend it or curve it into shapes till you are happy with the shape, then cut out that shape so you dont end up with a square. go along to your library or book store for some books on plants and landscaping to give you ideas of colour, shape, texture and what plants you can group together, hope this helps you to get your thinking cap on and you enjoy your new space that you have created. good luck. Hi Lorraine,
I totally agree--I had a square garden to work with- and I turned it into more like an ameoba, and put large rocks to frame it and was able to make it more like a raised garden after adding-more soil and mulch, for quite a different look. I added different colors and textures- some tiny flowers and some larger.
It will be your own masterpiece.

Hi Lorraine,
I have a camellia in a 1 gallon pot that I cannot find a spot for. Do you want it?
I think that you'd have good luck with camellias in shady/partial shade location like that square bed. Heck, I probably have some other stuff you might want, too.
I'm about to dig up two spirea that bloom tiny pink....you can have those too (but they might prefer more sun).
D mail me if you are interested!

Wow Laura, what a kind, generous gardener you are, so many folks just throw out perfectly good plants without even thinking that someone else might want them, good for you, I hope that Lorraine can use them, if not, some one else who can take up your offer, that's what gardening is all about, sharing not just knowledge, but plants too. Happy gardening. WeeNel.

Hi Laura, I would absolutely love the plants!! I can't believe you would be so nice. Let me know what to do now . How much will the postage be to ship them.
Anyway, let me know and I will get busy. I know the camillias work well here, my daughter in law next door has a beautiful one

Gilmer, TX(Zone 8b)

Lorraine I live in Gilmer. My week is fairly busy, but I could bring them to you this weekend. I also have some liriope (monkey grass), cannas, ditch lilies, mexican heather. The cannas and mexican healther will need lots of sun, though.
Can you D-mail me and we'll set up a time.
