No Plant it now!!
Bronc - are you sure they are Yuapon.... and thistles are GREAT for birds comign to your yard.
North Texas Roundup plant ID thread.
got it from coco-lulu. don't know which it is.
The red buckeye is a light brown and about the size of a large walnut.
The Mexican buckeye is black and about the size of a cherry.
Mitch! I'm not sure....they were labled yaupon holly. There was 6 of them and they were in 2in suare plastic pots.
I know the birds like the thistle but I have too much and they are not good for barefeet.
I'm pretty sure Louc has the Red Buckeye seed
I have yaupon - but the leaves are much smaller and still very very green.
Yes I thought the leaves looked quite large, myself. But I thought maybe that was how the younger ones were or maybe that they were in the shade. You know how small pecan and oaks will have really big leaves if they don't get a lot of sun? I hope they are yaupon hollies! Does anyone know who brought the "yaupon hollies" to the swap? Seems like I remember Charlene saying something about bringing yaupons.
Well, the leaves have the right shape, at least! Ooh, Josephine I can't wait 'til mine are big and covered with red berries! Great picture!
Ok. I have a plant that is quite common that I purchased at HD. The leaves are that size and purple year round. It has a pink bloom most of the summer. Have no idea what it is. Don't think you have a yaupon, TJ. It isn't a bad thing. I wish I had more.
TJ, can't tell from the photo, but have you checked out loropetalum? Mine has more elongated leaves than the photo below, and is all very dark purple right now.

I got several Yaupons from Charlene (at the swap) and they all look like Yaupons (ie, small leaves). They didn't transplant well, though, and most of their leaves are the same purple color as Bronc's. I'm hopeful they're still alive and will burst with new life come springtime.
Josephine, your Yaupon is just lovely. All of mine (Yaupon + Possum Haw) are berrying for the first time this year. Howard Garrett says that "on average" it takes a transplanted Yaupon/PH 3-4 years before they'll berry and, at least in my yard, he was right on target.
Carla
PB, I don't know but I hope they are yaupons. Maybe Charlene can get on here and clear up this mystery. Hey, the blue eyed grass, St. Johns wort and vinca MAJOR are all doing great and they are some of my favorite new addittions! I hope we get more time to talk at the next round up. Thanks
Carla, were yours in the small square plastic pots?
lady, that's the one. someday I will have to learn what things are instead of purple leaves with pink flowers. sheee.
Yup I brought 'em! The leaves are purple sometimes on the babies. Believe me they are yaupons! I have about 5-6 acres of them in a thicket of mostly all yaupons. If they don't survive, I'll bring plenty more next time. I bet they will be fine in the spring though.
You know only the male makes berries, that is why I sent more than requested so you would have a chance of getting a male.
I am going to look them up to see if they will propagate from cuttings. If so, I have loads of them with berries now and I will take cuttings to be sure you get males. I will LYK.
Charlene
P.S. Anyone with a backhoe is welcome to come get a big one with berries or a BUNCH of big ones! LOL
Then the cows could have more grass.
Thank you for the information. I have three mature trees that have been here a long time. Two have berries and one doesn't.
hummmmm
Mine doesn't berry either, Christy. Just gets covered with thousands of little white flowers. Luckily the neighbors' is about 10 feet away and I guess one pollinates the other, so theirs gets covered all over with berries. So it's not ours, but at least we get to enjoy it.
TJ, I'm glad that your plants are doing so well. Watch the hypericum. It might start out slowly, but in a year or two it will start spreading and take over places you don't want it. I've heard it blooms little yellow flowers, but mine's in shade so it never has.
deb, i am in touch with that company. hope to have my seeds soon. i wanted that climbing milkweed he has but he said his plant made no seeds this year. guess that will be the one i just have to have next year. lol.
Okay, I will take cuttings of the yaupons with berries. It seems they don't transplant that well, but do well from cuttings. You will at least know that you will get one that has the berries. I am going to mark some of them so if my winter cuttings don't take, I will be able to get some cuttings in the spring from the right ones. Spring round up working already! I really like you guys or something :).
Don't give up on your plants yet though as they may just go ahead and make it anyway. Of course I don't know how to tell if you have a boy or girl LOL. Just the males are the ones with the lovely red berries.
Charlene
What size pots were the ones you brought in, Charlene?
Bronc, I just checked my trade lists and I didn't have you down for yaupons. I put most of my trades in bags with wet paper and taped all my trades to one person together for ease of trading. I had you down for nandina bushes and I think we added some things that were not on the list later, but I didn't put very many things in pots.
I brought yaupons for Loonie, Mitch and Frostweed and I had some extras that I brought as well.
If yours were in pots, they were likely from someone else.
Charlene
Right I have that little ones here - and they are greenish and smaller leaf (well hard to tell but to me it looks smaller.
I also brought yaupons for patrob. Broncb, I am almost positive yours are yaupons and if the leaves are purple instead of crisp and brown, they will likely survive. Whether they will berry or not depends on whether they are male or female.
I am going to take cuttings this afternoon and start some male yaupons. I will be marking them for spring cuttings as you can't tell males from females when there are no berries on them. I don't have too much luck with winter cuttings, but I will try my best.
Charlene
Sheila said she brought the little potted ones on this post
Post #4266476
She was told they looked like Yaupon but she wasn't sure.

Let us see if this works better.

pbtxlady, I am so glad you posted the link to loropetalum as I just transplanted a very large bush from my daughter's house to mine. She is moving and wanted to save some of her plants before listing the house. She didn't have a clue what it was. Now I know how to care for it. Yeah!!
Charlene
Assuming nobodyelse brought yaupons, I guess I got 6 of the ones Sheila brought. Everyone agrees that mine look like yaupons (except Mitch), so I'll leave them in the ground where they are and hope they are what we think they are. I'm not really worried about the health of the plants, just the identity of them.
Charlene, could you get her to post some photos for the PF? There are a lot of entries, but that's the only picture I saw.
Bronc - they might be I have just have never seen them that color before...
Mitch, I was just messin with ya! I've never seen them that color either.
:-) no prob.
I also thought they were loropetalum. Looks just like my bush.
I think it's the "female" hollies that produce berries. The males simply pollinate.
Carla
Yes, just like humans.
pbtxlady, The bush is at my house now and has dropped it's blooms due to the transplanting. As soon as it is blooming again, I'll post a photo on the PF.
Does anyone have walking iris? My daughter gave me a nice lot of them and I had never even heard of them. She called them something else, but I kinda figured out the name due to their being iris and their walking habit. Several were still attached with one blade joining the two of them, it looks strange to me.
She gave me some bedding plants that she said I told her the name of them previously and that they would multiply. Well they did, but for the life of me I can't remember what they are. They have wilted due to the transplanting, but if they make a comeback, I will be posting them on the plant id. She said they have little purple flowers.
I can hardly wait for spring to come so I can see all the pretty things in bloom.
My Mya brug cutting didn't survive, so I am hoping for another one later.
Sorry about the confusion of the male/female on the yaupons. I knew it was one that produced berries, just got the wrong one. For one time in nature the female gets to be the pretty one LOL. If I were a cardinal, I would not like not being as pretty as my hubby.
Ah, but the female cardinal is less bright and less eaten by predators. Could be an advantage! My theory anyway. :>)
Sheila, you are in my zone, so when do the Walking iris bloom? You really took a nice picture of yours.
Charlene, are you sure about Maya? We may have gotten it from the same person (can't remember who--Kim, maybe?). Mine wasn't rooted, and I didn't think it was going to. But it got some tiny new leaves just this week. Yeah! :) :) So don't give up on it yet.
