Mitch, could you possibly post some photos showing how you do the hib cuttings? If not could you spell it out realllly simply for me?
Charlene
North Texas Roundup plant ID thread.
Hello Charlene, they are the tall kind, sorry. I hope you find the right flowers for your sister.
As for the pink you might try Prairie primrose, Oenothera speciosa, for early spring, and interplant with Carolina Phlox for mid spring and summer, the Mexican petunias also come in pink and bloom until fall, just some ideas.
Josephine.
Thanks Josephine. I am so lucky to have some of the tall ones. I took a bouquet of them from a friend's business. They took root in the vase. I have them potted up and plan on planting them in spite of the fear of the invasive problem they can cause. I think they may become one of my favorites. I love the color of the stems and I saw them in your slope photo with your other wild flowers. They don't seem to overtake the other flowers there.
The small ones I have potted up from my son's house will probably be enough to get her started as they also reseed and will multiply for her.
I will send her some links to the pink flowers you recommend. I love the photos of your Carolina pholx on your wildflower thread. I think I might like to have some of those here. Sis however, has a very small yard to work with and needs something more on the order of vinca or verbena probably.
Charlene
Thank you Charlene, maybe the next time I see you I can give you some of the Phlox, I love it. The mexican petunia is not invasive in my yard, maybe because i keep it well mulched. The clumps get larger but i don't have volunteers everywhere.
Josephine.
Sure - My Hibiscus cuttings -
Step one - cut a pencil sized and thinkness cutting about 6-8 inches long. This cutting needs to have 4-6 leaf buds and I only pick the ones that bloomed this year - they want to send out shoots faster and thus will have - at least I think more buds.
Step two - clean off all the bigger leaves, and everything but the top bunch of small leaves. Pinch out the tiny leaves on the top leaves also.
Step three - Cut the bottom of the stem into a V shape not removing the bottom leave bud.
Step four - I smash the end of the cuttings with the side of my knife once on each side to get things going.
Step five - dip in Willow Water, let sit for at least a few hours I have found the Salix Niagra is the best for this and kept a little tree here just for making Willow water all the time.
Step six - Plant in a sandy soil mix and keep moist. I use the Sunday cups from Sonic so I have the lid to place on the top and keep things moist for the cutting.
Step seven - wait and water, do not feed untill you see 4 new leaves and even them very very very little feeding untill ready to bump up the pot.
I do the same thing for most of my cuttings - the softer stems I do not bruise. I have done in ground and I take an old fish tank to do it. I simple place my cuttings in the ground were I want them to grow for a year or two and once I have 20 or so ready I top with a old fish tank the bottom of which is painted white. This can be in full sun with the top white it give shape and stays very moist. Really such an easy thing to do in winter.
Mitch, do you put the sundae cups outside or keep them inside?
I really appreciate all of your help. I do have an old fish tank, so I am going to try that method and will put some in cups with lids also.
On your step three, do you make the "V" an innie or an outie?
Thanks for the help.
Inside... I keep most of my cuttings inside but I have a spare room with good light that I use.
the V - cut the outside of the stem off so what remains looks like a V - so I guess on innie?
Is that Maya?
Hey Sylvia....what are you testing???
The first one is Maya - stunning too thank you for sharing. Do you know the name of the pink one?
Sheila its hard to teach an old dog new tricks! lol My Sony package is gone so i have to load off my hard drive and I am not so sure what I am doing or where my pics are going. lol Anyway I just took a pic of my 6 new cuttings a friend sent me from Georgia. They are leafing out like crazy . I had them in water for the longest. I didn t have any styrofoam cups, so I put them all in one pot. They are out side now .. what should i do if a freeze comes? Can I keep them in one of those storage rooms out side?
Sylvia, that orange thing is to die for. I have to have some of that.
Just let us know what it is and I will buy seeds.
Bring those cuttings out of the cold - they can take some cold once they have use but not when they are rooting... How wonderful to have such friends!
Lou, the orange blooming vine is Sylvia's Flame vine; isn't georgeous!!
Maybe she will root some to share at the Spring RU.
Sylvia, I don't know about Brugs that is Mitch's baby.
Mitch....If they already have roots can she store them in the dark storage, or just mulch and leave outside?
I did like you said on the one you shared with me at the Arlington Swap. I put a strip of wire mesh around it and filled it with mulch. It seems happy so far.
Brugs - will die to gound level but the roots willl send a new BIG shoot in the spring when things warm up. The stem might make it - I have had several make it but you can never count on it just mulch and know the roots are still there.
mitch, do you think it's too late to put a brug in the ground now?
Yes for me I would not risk it.
Kris in Rowlett, (Earthling).... say they come back for her... but she must mulch them really well.
What?? We have another person in Rowlett? I only know about Carla.
Sylvia, I see lots of possible seeds on the flame vine. Save us some. Everyone that sees it will want it. It is georgeous!
Mitch, I am getting an order of brug cuttings in the mail in the next day or two. What is your most successful method of rooting them? Is one method better for one kind than another? Here is a list of what I am getting:
BRUGMANSIA Cuttings 3 each:
Butterfly
Dr. Suess
Ecuador Pink
Frosty Pink
Golfito
Isabella
Strawberry Cream
Super Nova
Tequilla Sunrise
Thanks in advance for the help that I trust you will give.
Charlene
Oh my Charlene... That is seeds isn't it? Do that mean that vine is going to be coming up everywhere? The plants are growing off my fence straight to the roof of my neighbors house. I never thought it would go that far. I am going to cut that vine wayyyyyy back! Hopefully I can pull the seeded part back over here. I will still do cutting for you guys.
Charlene, did you order all those brug cuttings from Katz?
We ordered a lot of the same ones! OK here is what I do - Brug cuttings I take them find the "up" end and place in a very sandy mixture keep wet can covered. I loose very few, I have heard you need a bubbler to get them to grow but I have never found that to be a problem - at least not yet. I have grown 20 or so diffrent types of brugs from cuttings and they all do fine. I think keeping them moist but not too wet is the big key...
The ones Mitch cut and stuck into my potting bowl are going great. So far 10 out of twelve have more than one leaf. This was probably about 6 weeks ago.
I ordered my cuttings from flowerjunkie. They were just one dollar per cutting. I thought that was a great deal.
Thanks for the help Mitch, I knew I could count on you!
Sylvia, I don't know about the vine, so I am not sure if it will reseed, I will try to look it up. Is it just called flame vine?
Charlene
Right and that is with out rooting powder, and a few of them being very small.
Sylvia, here is the link to your vine: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1329/index.html It is Mexican Flame Vine. I will gladly pay postage and send you some other seeds for some seeds from this vine. I absolutely love it.
Charlene
Oh, Sylvia
Thanks for sharing the link to your brug photos!! They are so pretty- ya did it! Are these recent photos? The pink is Isabella or Frosty Pink- I can't remember what I sent you but I think it's too soon for blossoms, so these are brugs from last year or this last Spring?
My brugs have been rooting inside, or been potted up inside, since November 5th; we got our killer frost then in NE Georgia area. What zone are ya'll in, with your brugs there- are you still able to keep them outside, Mitch or Charlene?
I start my brug cuttings in a loose perlite/potting soil mix. But a friend of mine in this area starts them in pine fines, and they do great- he sells his on eBay. His are started in a greenhouse, which may have something to do with his success.
Near the end of December, I will put many rooted cuttings to sleep- this is not recommended for those with cuttings who have to keep them dormant for many, many months but mine do okey- put them into cool, not freezing, dark, like a basement or garage, and water sparingly. This also keeps the bug population near non-existent! I bring mine back out in late February and start them growing again under lights, then I move them outside, with frost protection when needed, in mid-March. Start fertilizing after they go back outside.
I'm sure in your zones you would have a shorter dormany period than me. I will not do this (forced dormancy) to my really choice hard-to-replace brug cuttings. You should not fertilize during the winter- brugs grow really fast and take up alot of room and so .......................... don't fertilize!! My not-enough-room issue is why I put many brugs into dormancy.
Hey, Sylvia, can I get in line for some of those Flame Vine seeds, too?? Sylvia and I share a passion/obsession for hostas, ya'll! Just to introduce myself to you!
Ya'll have a nice forum over here, real nice folks!
Brenda B
How 'bout a part 2, Ted? I've got DSL and this thread is slow to come up, so I can imagine how long it takes for those on dial-up
Brenda -
I let most all my brugs live in ground year round, I just dont have the room right now for them in the house. They are root hardy to zone 8 so even for you they should be ok in the ground well mulched. We have not had frost yet at my home - yet but will soon the last frost being about the time of mid March. I am moving to zone 7 and thus will have to find room in the house or let some of them go.
Mitch
Thanks, Mitch! Very helpful. Where are ya moving to? You just have to mulch your in-ground brugs deeper, over the winter in zone 7.
Now I'm waiting for Sylvia to add me to her list for Flame Vine seeds! lol!
Brenda
we are heading to Oklahoma City
Mitch you are leaving Texas? Why are you doing this? Oh my! What am I going to do?
Brenda and Charlene the seeds are yours! no problem. It will have to wait until Saturday daytime so i can see. I hate this time change ... I cant see squat! Just tonight I drove off the road to right .... trying to turn left into a shopping center, following someone else I ran up on the median ... it made such a loud noise ... everybody stop to look. I am a basket case tonight!
Brenda those Brugs are the ones you sent me last spring ... I did good, didn't I?
