North Texas Roundup plant ID thread.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I brought one extra Mealy Cup Sage (White), but I don't know who got it. It would have been in a 4" pot and only about 3" tall.
I brought some free trade extra Rose of Sharon, but the media in Bronc's pic doesn't look like mine, but that has been 3 weeks ago! LOL! If they were mine they are either white or white with red throat.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

3 weeks.......you mean you don't remember? lol. i must not have gotten yours since this one is a foot plus tall.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Mamajack, I brought you a rose of sharon about a foot tall. It is a double pink or lavendar I don't remember which one was yours I brought one of each that size.

Charlene

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I got the really large Dubl Pink ROS from you Charlene and it was the first thing I planted!! I can't wait until next summer when it blooms.
I do have one fairly large Salvia/Sage in a 1gal pot that I don't know who it was from. Anyone recognize this?

Hey! I need sumpm'n to do on New Year's!

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila, I brought that red gregg salvia .I have been out of town, so I'm just catching up with all the fun.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks for the ID, and good morning Anna! I didn't remember pre-trading for any, but I knew it was a salvia and planted it out in full sun. It will be loved. Can you tell me what variety it is or the shade of red, I went back and checked your list and didn't see it?

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

I gave you one small one which was called "Garnet", I think this one was originally labelled "red". Maybe you mentionned wanting one at the Wildscape.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I have that one still inside, it wasn't rooted enough just yet to set out, but I think that was the Garnet. So I will have a surprise 'red' to look forward to in the Spring!
Actually lots of surprizes, so much of my bounty is items I have never had before! Can't wait until next spring when I retire and can enjoy my garden all the time.

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

It sounds like you are counting down the days. It's nice that you get to retire when you can work in the garden alot.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, that was going to be my only hobby when I retire. That is why it was so depressing to have two back surgeries and now having to watch how I turn, stoop, etc. I was afraid I would never be able to use a shovel, or pull weeds again. But I have managed to arrive at a point that I can plant a few items and use some helpful tools to get down and back up from pulling weeds. Advil is my friend when I over do it on occassion. My co-workers get so tired of hearing me say how many days I have left. LOL!! Yep, I am counting them down. Monday I will have 120 "working" days left! (The formula removes the weekends & holidays)

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

120 days to go you say. I know you are counting them each and every day.

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

I brought some Rose-of-Sharons

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Melvatoo....I have loads of the white or white with red throats coming up as volunteers. If you would like more, I will pot them up in the spring for you.

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

Thanks Shelia, I have loads of them too...

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL!! I read it wrong, Melva! I thought you "bought" some ROS. Sorry!

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

That is okay Shelia..I have done that before! (many times!) I misread something one time, got a totally different meaning from it, and my Mother looked at me and said "why... I thought you could read!?!" thanks Mom....

Sheila, in the military, we would call you a 'short timer' & give you the little ribbon off of a bottle of VO! lol
:~)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL! Melva...good one Mom.

Linda, I have that short timer attitude too! I find myself caring less and less about problems other try to involve me in! LOL!! "Not in my circle" as they say! LOL!

I have some questions about some of the plants from the swap.

Sheila, do you have your butterfly gingers in shade or sun? I read that they like shade, so I put mine in a spot that is normally shady. But right now it's getting a lot of autumn sun. I'm not sure if it dislikes the sun, or if it's just going dormant for winter.

Brugs. Ted said I should treat them as tropicals. For those in this zone, do you protect them all winter? Or do they do okay when it's, say, just 40 as opposed to freezing? And do you cut them back or anything?

Firespike. Haven't seen Carl on here lately so I'm hoping someone else has this plant. Does it have to be in shade, or can it take some sun?

Sheila, all those water plants. Do I need to sink them or anything?

Josephine, how about frogfruit--sun or shade? I thought it was shade for some reason, but now I'm not sure?

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila, the Firespike can grow in mostly shade to about half shade. Just give it at least some dappled shade in the hot afternoon. Also, mulch it real well because it is borderline here.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Patty, The Butterfly Ginger in our area can't stand direct all day sun, or the leaves will look stressed. I have mine on the south side of the house and it gets morning sun until about noon, and part sun and shade the rest of the day. This time of year isn't bad on full sun, but they couldn't stand it this summer. They spread a bit each year, and will die back in the winter, just cut them back and mulch just a bit. I didn't get blooms the first year, so don't be discouraged if that happens. I tried them in the pond once, but they are so tall they would blow over and I would have to fish them out!
The Sweet flag (var. grass) just weigh down with rocks in about 4-6" of water. Pickerel does best in about 12-14" deep and potted. The Lizard tail will do well in any depth as long as it is in a pot, it roots very well. The Yellow Flag Iris will be fine in a large pot at about 12-16" It grows 3 foot tall. Horsetail will do better in 6-8", and don't plant it in the pond. It will spread and the roots push the rocks away from the sides of your pond. I think I covered them all.
Oh.....don't buy any aquatic soil, I have loads of it that you can wash with bleach water and reuse if you are interested. Since I am not keeping as many plants and have less ponds than I did, I don't need it.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Patty, the Frogfruit will do well in sun or shade it is very adaptable.
Josephine.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, thanks, you guys! That's a big help. My sun is so different from usual right now, and on some of these new things, I don't know whether it will hurt or not.

Sheila, I might take you up on that offer for the aquatic soil. Last time I bought some, it was something like $25 for one potful! For now, I put your guys in baskets or nursery pots, in the same clay I use for the water lilies. They all seem happy enough at the moment, but I'll want to fix them up in the spring.

BTW, Sweezel, the Mexican mint marigold is doing fine. I put it in a hot spot, and it didn't really miss a beat.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Brug - I grow mine in ground, cut down after first frost to 6 in tall or so pile mulch high and top with a 5 gallon bucket. If I know it will be warm for a few days I will take off the bucket. The part you cut off if you want to cut before it gets cold can start your backups in the house - easy from cuttings- you dig them up and pot to bring in. Just strip off the leaves and tender tips and you are good to go!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Mitch, the starts that you gave to me all have sprouted. yay

Barbara, the strawberry leaf thingy is still green. No sprouts yet but I'm not going to pull it up to see if it has roots.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Mitch.

Hey, did the water lily survive the division? I'm curious if fall is an okay time to do it.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

I think it did, looked great last time I checked.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Mitch, I have a question about the tall brugs that you sent me. I have potted them in large pots and put them in my hoop house. Will they sprout back out this year? Should I cut them back or leave them tall?

The small ones are growing just fine. The tall ones I am not too sure of.

How are all your little trees? Did you turn the playground into a forest? Miniature forest that is LOL.

Charlene

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Charlene they should leaf out if they get enough light and heat. Leave them tall.
Do not cut them below the Y as they will have to make another Y to bloom.

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks Ted. I think I'll bring them inside and put them in front of a window.
Charlene

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

I was thinking I might do the same thing. I'm not ready to put them in the ground yet, and I'm not feeling very confident about my garage.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

The trees most of them look great - a few are dark and I dont know - the brugs whould get green leaves here soon. Are the stems still green and firm to the touch?I bought in two one with leaves now just starting and the other with no leaves but still green. If they are green they are more then fine. You can cut back and grow more brug babies with the stems or you can leave the whole... I cut a little and start a few more each year.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

About three weeks ago Mitch brought a brug and about made me faint when he started cutting it up. I have a rooting bowl and all twelve pieces now have shoots on them, including the mother plant. It is in my tool shed. Lots of plants there this year. Gets very warm during the day. Will probably put an electric heater in soon.
