Colloquialisms Part 2

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

We were getting a bit long for dial-up. This is where we came from:

edited to say: check the 11th post down for the correct link as to where we came from--and it wasn't from under a cabbage leaf! LOL

Well, I messed up--but that's okay--I'll "fix" that hyperlink when I figure it out! LOL

(Zone 7a)

Got into edit then erase it and redo it. See if that works. And "Hi"!!!

(Zone 7a)

I got this in e-mail today. Thought it might be fun to pass it along since we were talking about misspellings a few days ago.

***I cdnuolt blveiee that I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd what I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in what oredr the ltteers in a word are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is that the first and last ltteer be in the rghit pclae. My son brought same at our Thanksgiving and I couldn't believe that one could understand the message...amazing..better not tell those students who are having difficulties with spelling..might start a new trend..

(Zone 7a)

Oops! I'll keep my "trap" shut. LOL I saw this a couple of years ago and it was pretty cool then, too.

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

I have seen that, also, and it is amazing! I didn't have a bit of trouble reading it--so there goes my 11th grade English teacher's theory down the drain! LOL I wonder how this will affect spelling bees all across the nation! HA!

(Zone 7a)

Their arguement can be that they had all the letters! What's YOUR problem?

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

I don't have one--I'm a really good speller except when I get to typing too fast smdnkjitheroa;p[dlfn !

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

I've tried 3 times to edit the top post. When I click on edit, "it" won't let me copy. What do I do now. One of you computer-literate people is more than welcome to do this editing for me!

(Zone 7a)

Let's see if this works.

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/781638/

And I didn't mean you, marsue! Sorry if it sounded like I was asking you what your problem was. I meant the people at our imaginary spelling bee! LOL

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Kwanjin, that is quite all right. I'm so dense at times that I am not easily offended--must be the "dumb blonde" syndrome for seniors because I have gray hair! LOL

(Zone 7a)

You know how you get a mental image of someone you don't know, have only "Heard"? I had an image in my head of you being 30ish with dark brown hair and a BIG smile. NOT how you just described yourself.

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

That's funny because that is what I looked like 35 years ago! Ha,ha,ha!
and this is what I look like now---with 2 of my grandchildren at the Little Rock zoo this past summer.

So cute!!! All three of you.

Here's me and DH...we're at an old shipwreck in Oregon.

Great photo, kwanjin--kinda looks like you are in "the belly of the whale"! I had red hair once upon a time when I colored my hair after it started turning gray--only a darker red, more auburn. I colored my hair for quite a while but when it got to be as gray as it is now, it became too much trouble, so now I am content being the "old gray marsue".
How about some pics of the rest of you so we can put a name with a face? I suppose I need to change the name of this thread to "Colloquialisms and other stuff". It's just for having fun so it doesn't matter what we talk about as long as we keep it within the guidelines of DG.

(Zone 7a)

I've let mine grow out since then. It's more the natural color of dark brown. Only two greys though. When I was 36, DH found a long white one in the back. I've not noticed anything until now. And it's been a long time.

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

I was thinking about some more "colloquialisms" tonight and came up with "blood is thicker than water". It is pretty universally used, I believe, to indicate that you can always count on family when friends desert you. Have you all found that to be true or have you found that your friends are really those you can count on when times get tough?
What about it, DG-ers, what has your experience been in this regard?

(Zone 7a)

My family sticks by me NO MATTER WHAT!!! Friends have come and gone but my family...You can do the stupidist things and they'll just laugh at you. I base most of my friendships on what my family is like.

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Hey, kwan, is it just you and me on this thread now? Where did everybody go? do you think we should combine the colloquialisms and neighbors threads or start a new thread and call it "just visitin'" or something like that?

(Zone 7a)

We should do that, I think. I would hate to "hog you" all for myself! Maybe we confused everyone?

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

I don't know about confusing them, maybe they just haven't found the 2nd thread. Why don't you go ahead and start a new thread with a different name. We can post here for anyone who finds this thread to come over there but you should do that because I am having trouble getting my hyperlinks to work.

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

Now don't go movin' just when I finally found this.

Didn't go back and read the original thread(s); I've got one of the old slow dialup situations...

But if you don't mind a KYian butting into the conversation...here's a few that are tossed around locally a bit. If they've already come and gone previously, throw a BTDT (been there, done that) at me.

"If you had three hands, you'd choke to death."

"Would you like a regular, or a lot?"

"Nummy"

"Amalance"

More to come...

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Hey, Vi, welcome and no none of those have been posted--they are all funny! I especially like the one with 'three hands'! LOL

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

Ok, that reminded me... if brains were dynamite, they wouldn't have enough to blow their nose!!!!

LOL

Janis

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Hey, I just found the 2nd thread. Why don't you go back to the first one, and put a link to here? Maybe others will find there own way, but it would be easier if you posted the link.

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks, woofens, glad you found us!
Defoecat, I just put the link on the other thread. For some reason my computer won't let me copy the info in my browser up there at the top so whenever I want to put in a hyperlink I have to type out the whole thing! Bummer! Anyone know where that expression came from--"Bummer"?

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

What's "Nummy"?

Isabella, MO(Zone 6b)

I think it means "dummy" but Vi will have to answer that one, to be sure.

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

I have heard "Nummy" used instead of pacifier, or Binky......

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

Nummy means Good or Yummy also...My Mammy used to say when someone would Honk their horn **Blow yer nose, you will get more out of it!!**

-South Central-, IL(Zone 6a)

Woofens, "if brains were dynamite, they wouldn't have enough to blow their nose!!!!"

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

I found you!!
How about, More fun than a barrel of monkeys!! Or...he has two left feet!

Dillonvale, OH(Zone 6a)

FlowrLady glad ya liked it :)

Janis

(Zone 7a)

Or.."Doesn't have two brains cells to rub together."

(Zone 7a)

After my daughter started talking, she had trouble with certain words. She had a stuffed panda bear she called "Penny Bear" and whenever something happened that was exciting or out of the ordinary, she would say "Oh my gumus!" (goodness). We still use that one today.

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

"If you had three hands, you'd choke to death."
My wife brought this from Germany with her -- inherited from her grandparents.

"Would you like a regular, or a lot?"
This is fresh from Prestonsburg, KY -- where my wife was prudent and asked for the regular and was overwhelmed by the quantity. Only then did she peruse the menu to determine that in these parts, a "lot" was spelled lite.

"Nummy"
Dusty must be from Wisconsin, like my mom. This is her phrase for what's good, especially from her kitchen.

"Amalance"
What else would you call that vehicle with flashing lights, sirens, and toting sick folks to a hospital?

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Nummy here is good, but nummy naw is extra good. My granddaughter coined that phrase.

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

Good Grief Nooooo.. I am most assuredly NOT from Wisconsin...I have Ohio roots, and Kentucky roots, but I am a die hard Tarheel from eastern North Carolina!!!

Your Momma must have been transplanted... LOL

Um Amalance aka Meat wagon...

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

LOL, yep, I've heard "meat wagon" used around here!
