Hi JMR, there are no stupid questions on this site, only questions that people need an answer to, so dont ever feel you cant ask for the thought of being stupid, Firstly a bog is an area of ground where for various reasons, the soil is continually wet, NOT flood wet where water stays on the surface like in a pond, but you often come across a BOG area around the edges of a pond, therefore some people take advantage of this area to grow BOG plants, these plants dont like to sit in deep water but like their roots in wet soil and very attractive these plants are, other people who like the bog plants, but dont have a wet area will create an artificial BOG area by digging a wide hole, laying thick plastic sheeting in the bottom and forking a few holes in the sheeting for some water to run away as they dont want a pond, then they fill the hole with soil and compost allowing them to plant the bog plants they so admire, they then refill the hole from time ti time with either rain water or a hose pipe due to evaporation and the plants can survive for long in dry soil. A bog area is probably similar to what you would call a swamp so long as there are no deep patches of water. hope this answers your question in a more simplified way, but dont be too scared to ask any questions you need answers to, that is how we all learned to get a garden started, good luck. Might be a great place to put in a rain garden if it's not soggy all the time :)

you will be surprised at how many lovely plants that you love, but cant grow because you dont have a wet patch to grow them, a good place to look for things you might quite like is to visit a well planted pond and look at the plants that grow around the margins of the pond, these are what you can grow in a bog garden, things like Angels fishing rods, some iris have to have damp wet soil to grow and there are things like big leaved Hosta, to name a few so good luck, do your research and have a look at books in the library for this type of gardening, it is good fun and you have plants that others cant grow.
