CA Fires

Count me in, too. Maybe a thread for people who live in that area to post if they would like help re-establishing their gardens?

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I've been quietly lurking and waiting to see what I could do to help out.

I like the idea of the Releaf fund. Will this be a fund that is always available for contributions regardless if there is an active disaster?
If so, (I don't know if this would be appropriate?) but maybe you could add a box to the subscription or renewal page to add a voluntary contribution to the ongoing disaster fund, or are there legal issues with that sort of thing?

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

susybell,

I don't know if the relief fund will be available at all times.

Adding a box to the subscription is an accounting nightmare. Before DG was bought, I did all of the accounting work, and keeping all of that separate made my head hurt :) That's specifically why we left them separate during Katrina. Now that NameMedia owns us, they don't want to deal with that either, not to mention it is a tax liability. Also, it would then be NM's money. Dave and I have always thought that people work these things out better than cooperations :)

Hi Trish,

That makes lots of sense. I forget that you're corporate owned. (So, do you guys ever get a vacation? Seems like you both deserve one for all the hours you put in.)

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, I don't get paid, so I guess I don't get a vacation (or maybe every day is a vacation!)

But, yes, both Dave and Terry get vacation days- 2 weeks per year, I think. The question then becomes- when do they find time to take it?!?!?! :)

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I like that susybell - "Re-leaf" fund....very appropriate!

Warm and fuzzy and witty!

got to actually meet The Dave today at the RU. Even nicer in person than he is on DG.

I was out of touch with my friend who lost her house and I just caught up with her. Its so hard for some of these people because she was turned down for any fima aid because she has insurance. Her and husband had to rent a place i while they figure out what insurance will cover and how long it will take to rebuild. The olnly place they could find that would take her pets was almost twice her mortgage. I just dont understand why our goverment only helps people with inurance. I mean sometimes I feel so angry when I hear stuff like this because we pay all these taxes and then they turn you down. grrrr. Its almsot better to be aloser and not work in this country these days. She lost everthing . Her home was in rancho bernardo. The didnt give them the evac notice until 4 am that morning and she said embers were falling in yard already......

Im not sure what you all had decided to do, but its a long way off before they will be able to plant anything and we may all forget about the fires by then, but what I was gonna do for her is go through my kitchen stuff and give her any extras, because imangine you have nothing left to even cook with. Her and husband havnt had answers on how much insurance will cover but hopefully its enough to build and fully furnish her house.

Her name is Kate and I mentioned that I would give her contact info to the forum.

If you, or a co-worker, or a friend, know of someone that lost their home - please have them email us for the form at sandiegowildfireblankets@gmail.com. We are asking that the burnt address be included, just for verification purposes. Also, we would like to have a way to contact the nominee and the requester.

Haven't heard a peep. I checked with jazmine188 after the first rains, and she said she was on high ground, so OK.
I should check with wcgypsy and see if she knows anyone in need.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I too am checking with some CA friends....
