Should I cover tiny poppy sprouts with leaves over winter?

I have a very steep hill just at the back of our house, which I am trying to grow drought tolerant plants to hold back the erosion. Three weeks ago, I planted lots of poppy seeds in the bare areas for spring, and I see that there are many tiny sprouts showing through - would it be OK to cover the hill with leaves for the winter as protection for the little sprouts and to help stop the mud slide, or would that rot the poppy sprouts? Hi again, Sue - After the first hard freeze, feel free to cover your babies with a nice 3 - 4" covering of leaves. Just be sure to rake off the leaves in the spring when you start seeing any greening of your local vegetation. Check under the leaves regularly beginning in early March for signs of life, and take off their covering at that time. They should reward you with some beautiful flowers!- Dax
