where to keep bulbs before planting

It is still too warm to put my narcissus in the ground, so can I just keep them in the house? In the crawl-space under the house? In the refrigerator? I want to plant them in mid-November.

Hi Jullie, if you have only just got your Daffi bulbs and need to delay planting for a few weeks, then keep them in the dark in a cool area where it is dry, if you put them under the house, be aware that they will be eaten by mice, squirrels etc, you might not think you have mice, but they will be around somewhere and dont know anyone who has not lost bulbs in this way, you could also put them in pots in cool dark area till November and then when the time comes to plant them, you just pop them into the planting hole along with the compost from the pots and the roots will be undisturbed if done with care, this way, they may flower up to a week or so earlier as you have giver them a start in the pots/compost, always plant your bulbs at least 3 times the depth of the bulbs so if your bulbs are say 2 inches from root to growing tip, then your planting hole should be 6 inches deep, even deeper if you want to add compost to the bottom of the planting hole as this will take up a few inches of space, hope this helps you out and you enjoy your flowers come spring, good luck, WeeNel.

Julie,
I always go ahead and plant my bulbs in Oct here in MS so I would think you'd be O.K. over there in AL too. They might try to put on a little top growth but unless it gets REALLY cold, they will just sit there like that all winter and then finish growing come spring. I've never lost any by doing it this way. I just planted some iris a friend gave me a couple of weeks ago and they are looking good. By getting them in now they will have more time to set down a good root system.

Here is my bit:
If your soil never freezes and your daffodils require it for flowering, you might want to keep them in the fridge for a while, just be careful not in the fruit and vegetable drawer, because apparently it inhibits the flower formation.
However, I suspect (I am not sure) that you are in Zone 8 somewhere, and you have some (at least mild) winter. Then, I would keep them in a cool dry and shaded place (dark is better) until weather cools down, but I think you have to plant them before the expected frost date (check your local and plant them about two weeks before).
I agree with WeeNel that keeping them outside or under the house might stimulate some rodent problems; if you have to, just keep them in a protected box (wire mesh?) that can "breathe" and check on them from time to time. I'm of no good in telling you of chemicals to repell the nasty pests, never did it before.
During storage, try to avoid plastic bags that have no holes (best use paper bags or newspaper), since humidity and airtight containers/bags can spoil your bulbs.
Lots of luck to you! I hope you'll have a wonderful garden the coming spring!
