i was told that iris bulbs should be pulled up in the winter and replanted in the soring. i live in norfolk,va and it is only really cold for about 2-3 months(usually jan. to mar.). should these be pulled or just cut back?
wintering irises
I would think that in Virginia you could leave them in the ground and just cut them back. This does depend on the type of Iris you have. Some need winter cold, so if you don't have that for them, then yes, you will need to pull them and refrigerate them for a couple of months.
Hope this helps, Kwanjin
Iris should be left in the soil. they can be cut back after bloom and will set some new leaves. They can be easily moved or transplanted this time of year but no need in your zone to pick them up and store. They over winter just fine in the garden,
Thanks for the info!!! I'm thinking of moving them to a sunnier location, guess I know what I'm doing today!!!! Thanks again
If your worried about the frost getting to your bulbs etc, and you dont get really deep ground frost, just throw a mulch over the plant area and this will keep them snug and protected all winter, if a deep mulch is added, maybe you would need to scrape some away in the spring so the bulbs can get through the soil and dont sit in a wet mulched area for too long. Good luck. WeeNel.
Thanks!!!!
Dont mulch bearded iris. Their rhizomes will rot. Yopu might want to ask this question on the iris forum.
