dividing lavender

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

is there an easy way to divide lavender? i have a vera and a munstead that have gotten very large, and i have been gathering things for a new co-worker of my DH who just moved to CT and is trying to establish a garden. I've been successful with oregano, black peppermint, dianthus, coleus, and coreopsis.

Thanks!

I have never split up my Lavenders as they have always grown from one main stem and just bushed out, I have taken many cuttings from them and had huge success with that, they become leggy and out of shape when they dont get pruned after flowering, to stop this leggedness, after they have finished flowering, get the garden sheers out and just give a haircut, dont cut into the hard wood stem as this will not re-flower, it will die off, all you cut is the top growth off that flowered that year, come spring, it sends out nice new soft shoots and these are what flower that year, to take cuttings, all you do is pull off any side shoots that have grown that year but not flowered, run your fingers down the bottom of the stem for about 1 or 2 inches to remove the foliage from that part of the stem and get a pencil to dab holes in the compost with added sand to it, the cuttings will root in about 6 to 8 weeks, then when they are rooted, pot them on to individual pots, nip out the growing tips to form bushy plants, within 2 years you have a new plant about 12 inches tall and should be bushy if you keep nipping out all the new shoots as they form, good luck.
