A Distinct Sound

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok, I wasn't going to say it, but I will...

the sound of a dog laughing

North Augusta, ON

Distinctive sounds....one I hear almost every night...the howling of a pack of wolves.

Trying to house train my new puppy.....she hears them howl and heads right back to the house.....and I always spook myself, thinking if I shine the flashlight into the field I could see the glowing eyes......

I was thinking about this thread when my DH got up this morning for work. Here's what I heard and could tell what was happening without looking...

The shower water, the electric shaver, the basin faucet, teethbrushing, coffee brewing in the kitchen, DH putting pants then shirt then boots on, coffee being poured into a travel mug (cream and sugar added), can of cat food being opened and the immediate sound of two starving cats, breakfast being served to said cats, jacket being put on by DH (where the hell's my phone being muttered under his breath), back door opening and closing, garage door opening then closing, his car driving away.

These are all distinct sounds that I hear every morning but never really think about. It was kind of sad after he left knowing I was now alone in the house. This is, until I started hearing the other sounds of our neighborhood.

Train whistle (that's a lonely sound), dogs barking, cars starting up and down the street, traffic on the highway, cats bathing, rain...soothing. So much so I went back to sleep.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

The quiet is spooky to me. I like frogs croaking, birds singing.

I would love to hear the wolf howling.

(Zone 7a)

I've only heard wolves once, on a trip to Idaho. Coyotes, lots. How about elk calling? That's an eerie sound, too.

Wilton, CA(Zone 9b)

It must be the spirit of Halloween; seems alot of the sounds listed have a scary feel. But of course the baby laughing is just too precious for words. Hven't heard the dog laugh! Have to go to the link.
Screech Owls have a frightening call.

Cat fights in the night. Oooo, always scare me til I figure out what it is, can sound like a baby crying.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

static on a tv is spooky in the middle of the night.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

have heard cat fights since childhood but recently heard what someone told me is a fox noise at night- really creepy.

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

I used to babysit for my DB and DSIL who live way back in the woods in the middle of nowhere. After the kids were in bed I'd often go out on the deck to have a smoke and a cup of coffee...waiting for them to get home around 11:30. They always told me about this "creepy, crazy sound in the woods" and I thought they were just trying to freak me out...till I heard it. I can't even describe it. It wasn't a howl or a cry or a screech but somewhere in between them all, and it made my skin crawl and sent me flying in the house faster than I think I've ever moved. Whatever it was that made that noise I don't ever want to meet up with. It could make a person believe in Bigfoot and what-nots!

North Augusta, ON

Reminds me of a bobcat screech I heard once in the woods....had the same effect on me........

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Could be a bobcat, they've been sighted around here now and then but not often. The creepy, crazy noise doesn't happen often and it's only heard at night as far as I know. It's probably the distant neighbor playing tricks, lol!!!

(Zone 7a)

Here's one I heard tonight. "Good evening ********* shoppers. The time is now 9:00pm and *********** is now closed." Happiest sound I've heard all day. That and "Welcome home!"

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

worked in a small mall store and there was a teenage mutant ninja turtle video game out in the common area that would play the song if nobody played the game.....can still hear it ! how can one lose selected brain cells please?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Heroes on the Half Shell!

LOL

Springfield, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL critter! I am hearing rain, ponding out of a broken downspount, unto an overturned , plastic tub.

(Zone 7a)

I walk by a GNC store in our mall and I always hear "Have you checked your weight today?" I hate that! Does anybody else have one of these? It's the scales they have outside their door that does this.

My dog's toenails on the kitchen floor...

(Zone 7a)

Slurping a drink? I can always find my DH at a store by listening for his distinctive sneezes! Dust everywhere gets to him and he will sneeze a dozen times and by then I've found him! Chain saws, jackhammers, backhoes, hammers, drills...

The sound of a baseball bat connecting on the sweet spot?

The opening notes of "Fur Elise".

Springfield, OH(Zone 6a)

Oooo those are good ones, especially the ballbat.
Depsi, that had got to be my favorite so far, the dogs nails!

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Oh yes, the chain saw scares me to death.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Other things in stores now ready to talk to you--motion sensor i guess--there's one at WAWA, there's something in the electronic computer toys aisle..hate them.

love my mom saying 'Hi hon' on the phone' her standard greeting. but that's a given.
Hated the phrase 'time to get up' since she had to use it seventymillion times during my chilhood LOL

(Zone 7a)

When my daughter calls me and I don't answer, her standard voicemail is "Hi, Momma. Just called to say 'Hi.' " That's conforting thing to hear, too.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

awwww

(Zone 7a)

When my mom wanted us to get up, she usually said, "Get up or you'll get dumped!" She always smiled when she said it but we knew she was serious!

New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)

Our cat is an indoor/outdoor cat. But I always bring her in at bedtime. Sometimes she doesn't like it however...and wants to go back out. So after we are in bed, she gets up and rakes her paws down the miniblinds at the window...bdddddddddddttttttttt...like a tommy gun going off!!! Needless to say...she gets her way!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

She has you well trained! ;-)

St. Louis County, MO(Zone 5a)

The sound of wind in the fall when the leaves are dry. The plink of the leaky faucet late at night. The sound of the smoke alarm when I cook (lol). Thunder rhumbling in the distance. Grandkids squealing Maw Maw when then get out of the car (great joy!).

lewiston, ID(Zone 6a)

Cathy, know that I am a member of your community. I have a sticker on my fridge that says "Dinner is ready when the smoke alarm goes off!" . One time I was to take a casserole down to neighbors for a potluck dinner & they called to see where I was (I had gotten busy on another tangent) just as the fire alarm went off. It's always a chaotic, crazy, loud scene 'cause the two dogs are barking & I'm running around trying to find the boat hook outside that is long enough to tap the alarm to turn it off. The alarm is located in the highest part of our great room, wouldn't you know!!!!!!!! It's a joke between me & my family. I've done this for years...glad to know someone else shares the fun...Deb

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Did you ever notice how when the smoke alarm goes off no one seems to notice. What about the car alarms they are a joke.

(Zone 7a)

We had a tornado here in 1999. When the power went out in our mall, we had people who were ANGRY that we wanted them to evacuate!! "Can't you just ring this up for me? I have to be somewhere and I NEED this!"

St. Louis County, MO(Zone 5a)

Kwanjin, I believe it. I was waiting in the emergency room in terrible pain when one man ahead of me had the nerve to say "I need this taken care of by 10, I have a party to attend". If looks could kill, he's be dead now.

(Zone 7a)

I know what you mean, too. I work closely with the police and we see people getting in trouble all the time. The number 1 question they ask us? "Is this going to take long? I'm late for work." And "When we will be done?" Like I can give them a time frame when the police will be there.

(Zone 7a)

Another distinct sound is outside my window right now! Our flicker is back!!! He's staking his territory again. He does this every year. We know he's the same one because he has some markings that identify him for us.

(Zone 3b)

The quiet, but cooing, snuggling sounds of a baby asleep in your arms...so awesome.

Victoria Harbour, ON

sitting quietly listening tothe tic-toc/tic toc of the clock while breathing to the same sounds...feeling calm and nodding off with each tic/toc

Springfield, OH(Zone 6a)

That's a good one Betty!
Farting, that's a pretty disSTINK sound!

Wilton, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh my crash aren't you the clever one!
