A Distinct Sound

Wilton, CA(Zone 9b)

This morning while chatting w/a friend she said that over the wknd she had gone Skeet shooting w/her son; and that she used a shotgun. And as she told me I could "hear" the sound of loading the shotgun. Chink-Chink; a sound that should put the fear in the hearts of anything on the other end of barrel!
It got me thinking of other sounds that can only be.....a.....? (what?)

Victoria Harbour, ON

When hearing emergency sirens I get goosebumps..always worry that it's family on the road that need the service...then I start my calls!

(Zone 7a)

How about the phone a 3am? That always sends a chill!!!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

and then if a wrong number....makes me want to make Sound number one...sorry if cranky, arm in cast.
heard my white throated sparrow back for winter, fun to know a few bird calls.

(Zone 7a)

The sound of walking on fresh snow, rain on the roof, the wind through the eaves...mmm.

How about the sound of one of your kids falling down in another room? That'll send you running!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

the -lack of- sound during falling snow

(Zone 7a)

I can always tell if it's snowing when I wake up because of that lack of sound. VERY distinct.

The sound of a loved-ones car coming down the street during a blizzard? Relief!!!

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Hearing growling coming from behind you. That scares me to death.

(Zone 7a)

Now I'm creeped out! Brrr.... ;-)

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok, this might sound stupid, but........have you ever talked to someone on the phone and you could tell they were smoking a cigarette? I am a smoker, but "that sound" drives me crazy! I know, I'm just crazy, period.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Growling coming behind you and when you turn around you don't see anything but great big eyes.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

I hate that also. I hate cigs. period.

Victoria Harbour, ON

swimming in the ocean, remembering the theme song of "JAWS" ..... now I'm getting a little beside myself.. but have thought it just seconds before I decided that I've had enough swimming!!! lol

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

That one is awful also. Gives me the shivers.

Glenview, IL

Oh my gosh, "Jaws" I seen a a shark swim up to shore while my kids were playing...the very sound my shrieking get out of the water...still sends shivers.

Wilton, CA(Zone 9b)

That Jaws theme and the "notes" of Pysco; anytime you hear them ya know the movie...and the fear. Pysco..that certainly isn't spelled right, but can't come up w/anything that seems right///the movie w Norman Bates..

How about the sound of a rattlesnake...

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Psycho- but I read your Pysco as Psycho until I went and re read three times!!

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

The sound of feet behind you. That psycho music does creep you out. That music they play in Jason movies.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Sally... arm in a cast?? Oh, no! *HUGS*

Hmm, distinctive sounds... cat coughing up a hairball... that's one that just can't be anything else, and it'll wake us in the middle of the night, scrambling to put a piece of newspaper in front of the kitty so it's easier to clean up!

How about something nicer... The unmistakable sound of... bacon sizzling in the pan!

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

The smell of the coffee in the morning.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

or that sputtery hissss the coffee maker makes as the coffee finishes brewing! unmistakable!

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

The smell of puppy breath

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

sounds, makshi, sounds LOL! although puppy breath is certainly distinctive... especially when they've gotten into the fishy garbage!

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

New puppy breath is sweet. Sounds I know. I smell better than I hear. :)

North Augusta, ON

Can I play?

How bout the unmistakable sound of squealing tires...I always cringe...waiting for the unmistakable "thud"

Wilton, CA(Zone 9b)

That thud...heard it just a few days back when a silly driver thought he'd make the turn but nope; hit the barrier; Thud!..backed up and sped away. Wish I would have heard sirens!
Rain on a tin roof. It seems like a comforting sound until it gets Too loud, then it changes into a ominous threat.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

hairball hack!! talk about roflmbo the hairball scene in Shrek

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

oooh ! dentist drill

lewiston, ID(Zone 6a)

To this day the theme song from Jaws makes me pull my feet up. A very distinctive sound I love to hear is the call of a Meadowlark. When we lived in Tomales Bay CA, the sound of the fog horns in the heavy fog 'cause they are just so muted but comforting and of course, the buoy bells....Deb

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

whipped cream from a pressurized can, yummmy
(critter- i tripped and fell, cracked a bone, simple but inconvenient. take calcium, all)

Wilton, CA(Zone 9b)

Ohh the fog horn; a very lonely sound.
I'm not even going to talk about hairball hack..gross out!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

My favorite lovely, lonely, unmistakable sound... the call of a loon, drifting over the lake.

(Zone 7a)

Oooooh!!! I love Loons!

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

a baby's laughter...so contagious!

a crackling fire...cozy and so many memories

a kitten purring

Victoria Harbour, ON

Critter...my girlfriend has a true belief that when the loons cry they mourn the imminent death of someone...how very sad if true...so yes, it does give me the hebee jeebe's

Victoria Harbour, ON

Heathrjoy...those are indeed soothing sounds...

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Soothing sound is the soft breathing of someone you love sleeping.

Silsbee, TX(Zone 9a)

DH's snoring rattles the windows when he's sleeping, but for some reason I still find it comforting

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

My Dad use to snore like that. I always felt protected when I heard it. It was enough to scare the pants off of someone. :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Betty, the loons called so often around the lake where we went fishing in Ontario that the area would've been depopulated of humans in short order if that were true... it's an eerie sound though!

Eliot kitten's purr is unabashed.. like rocks in a pepper grinder. :-)
