Show us your feeders, vol. 2

Thanks Gary, hope you feel better soon!

Klamath River, CA

lilyfantn...........this should be the finished product, unless a bear or the snow knock it down. Notice the Scrub Jay in the upper right checking things out. All the time I was putting on the finishing touches I had birds in the black berries cussing me out for being so slow,

that looks like a Coopers Hawk to me; what do you think Resin?

Certainly an Accipiter hawk; I was thinking Sharp-shin as it has a fairly square-ended tail, but it could easily be Cooper's, not easy with the distance/size of pic.
Quoting:
pine siskins have always been here but I was lumping them in with finches

They are finches! Same genus Carduelis as American Goldfinch.

Ever seen anything like this? I haven't. When a friend gave it to me some time ago, I quickly stuck it in my trash/treasure stash in the garage.

Since I've been recently bitten by the bird watching bug, yesterday I rummaged around for 20 unpleasant minutes 'til I found it. I washed it, dried it, polished it and filled it with sunflower hearts. As I took it to my back deck, the only positive feeling I had was it was light and portable enough that I could move it anywhere on the deck I wanted.

Guess what? My Red-breasted Nuthatches think that this homely (to me) thing is the greatest thing since sliced bread!

Oh well..my bird newbie lesson #32.

Dave,

Fantastic shot! RBW are one of our favorites! Besides suet cakes (woodpecker treat + peanut treat), peanuts in feeder, occasionally BOSS, they love the Jif extra crunchy pb I spread on an old farm post (that was left here at our property border when we built house)!

I'm old enough to be your Father (maybe Grandfather) and I just brought home my first ever jar of Jif Extra Crunchy PB. Who says this thread doesn't have influence over others?

That is excellant adel! I'm insanely jealous lol! It's like a bird food carnival!

Hi dw! I have something similar to your feeder but mine is a water contraption. I picked it up at Walmart this spring. The birds really like it - especially when the drought here really took hold. My only complaint is that it is a little hard to screw the bottom back on once I have cleaned and refilled it.

Nice going Dave!

Lily, I was thinking of getting that water contraption too; maybe next Spring. :-)

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

I've got that watering thing too, picked it up at Walmart a couple of years ago. I forgot about it this year and just found it when I was cleaning off a corner of the porch :-{ Here's my makeshift watering set up this year.

Cute pic sadie!

Thanks :-) I actually caught a Mockingbird bathing in it this summer, he looks pretty ratty in this pic!

LOL! I look at the water contraption to every time I go to Wal-Mart!!!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

I've had that water contraption for a few months now and have it hanging from my "bird feeding tree"! The birds use it all the time but I agree with Lily that it takes awhile to get the bottom screwed back on..I end up spilling some of the water. it is worth the effort though as the birds love it so much.

Here is the double sided suet feeder that the nuthatch and wp just love.

I love that one dellrose; does it also hang?

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Hi pelle. Yes it is hanging from a nail in the tree. I hung it where the wp spend a lot of time and today I smeared a bunch of crunchy peanut butter on the trunk of the tree. I don't know if they've found it yet. I can watch them from my computer and they sure are entertaining!!

Hello!

That bird waterer can also be found online.

I just took this in dim morning light but I wanted Frank (fchisolm) to get a sneak preview of the pleasure that his log feeder suggestion is bringing me.

Also, it is a wonderful natural looking addition to my yard.

That looks great Dave!

What did you put on the log to attract the Downys?

Anchorage, AK(Zone 4a)

During the winter, the Ravens in my neighborhood make their own feeders. On trash day, they go down the streets ahead of the garbage trucks.

LOL, okay probably not funny for you guys there Gary but they are pretty smart!

Anchorage, AK(Zone 4a)

Their bills are large and powerful enough to open most trash containers. They seem to delight in spreading the contents down the street.

Pelletory, it almost seems you knew what I was typing as a caption on the above picture.

As soon as the Ravens move down the street, the second string moves in, to check for anything left behind. Once the bags are open, the Magpies are able to add to the mess.

I think the Magpies are such a cool looking bird!

Pelle,

I'm experimenting with Jif Extra Crunchy PB and my old standby woodpecker suet to see which pays off best for me over time. I tried peanut halves but they are too much work getting stuffed in the holes.

Dave,

I've been reading this thread tonight and saw your comments about the Jif extra crunchy peanut butter. Jif is the only pb I grew up on and the only one I'll buy today. I think it's the best (for DH and I, as well as, the birds!). Glad to help in the bird addiction! ;-)

The old advertising slogan of Jif in the 60's, 70's and maybe the 80's was "choosy mothers choose Jif" ;-)

Marilyn,

I'm now a believer! One problem is it's so tasty that it disappears thru the night far quicker than the suet from the one inch holes my cemented tree trunk feeder. I've yet to learn who's the culprit - Raccoons, Skunks, Possums, a stray cat or what all since I have them all them and more I suppose.

Oh well, until we get our heavy snows, it's a brisk and refreshing early morning chore. So far I'm sticking with 50-50 pb and woodpecker suet since certainly the Downys and the Red and White-breasted Nuthatches like the suet while the pb draws Sparrows and an occasional Squirrel during the day.

I've yet to see my RBW at the tree trunk feeder so far sticking to the peanut silo since I started using peanut halves and stopped wasting my money on those pricey peanut flavored suet "nuggets" which is a rip off (IMO) sold because they appeal to birders and not to birds.

The tree trunk is now (by far) the most productive of all my feeders and with Safflower on the small 7 inch diameter top it is a mini platform feeder like you wouldn't believe. I think the birds like the natural look and the fact that they have a clear 360 degree view since I have several active Cooper's Hawk that come around daily.

When the snow does start falling, I'll have time to post some pics (on the then current feeder thread) to show all this but right now I just don't have the time to cull thru all the pics I stowed away without even checking. I'm hoping to get my beautiful Northern Flicker coming to the silo, hopper or tree trunk but so far he's been shy. Switching to BOSS from Safflower might do the trick but I'm waiting for the Raccoons to start their semi hibernation first because they go crazy for BOSS and can easily wipe out 5 pounds in the hopper in one night. At least the chipmunks have hibernated.

Regards to a fellow night owl.
Dave
