Show us your feeders, vol. 2

Hebron, KY

Here's the feeder (seen much better days).

DH took this one when we were very blessed to have the Rose Breasted male and female visit (migrating) on the morning of 5/7/07.

My bird feeder is on the outside of my kitchen window, just above the counter. I'm able to watch the birds and work at the same time.

That's wonderful, Grasmussen, to see the birds that close! :-)

Thanks for sharing.

Love the windows too Gary!

Very nice pics marilyn!

I would LOVE to have a window feeder in my kitchen, maybe I'd actually keep the dishes washed!

Nice pics Marilyn! It looks like that Stokes feeder has held up very well. I was so excited earlier this year to see my very first Rose Breasted Grosbeak on May 13th. It stayed around for about a week, they sure are beauties. 1 stopped back by for a couple of days this fall too (9/23) maybe it was the same one. I hope they remember where I am next year!

Thanks Marilyn - for the great pics, and for helping me ID what I now think was a Rose Breasted Grosbeak that flew into my window early this spring. He landed on the ground on his belly, but I did see the white in his wings, and the red of the breast. I tried looking up what it could have been, but now I'm fairly certain.

debilu,

You're welcome! :-)

The following photos were taken by DH of the Rose Breasted Grosbeaks.. I'm always speechless and in complete awe whenever I see them (male and/or female), which is only during the Spring and Fall migrations.

Gary,
I see some sort of wooden things - two of them - there on the fence. What are they?

Marilynbeth,
That is a wonderful idea for a feeder. I'll try and adapt this method -which is very simple!

Our cajun house that DH made was suppose to be for a raccoon that took over one of his cabinets but between the birds and the squirrels, well just call the cabin 'all guests welcome'.

Dinu- I think those are birdhouses on Garys fence. I would like to know what birds use them.

DiamondD, Thanks for posting your pics! Love your cockatiel and the Cajun House your DH made is really sweet!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

DiamondD, that cabin is sooooo cute! One of are hawks has been busy the last couple days so all the birds are jumpy and don't hang around long.

Baton Rouge, LA(Zone 8b)

Isn't it fun to sit outside and watch the wildlife?! They are so amazing. And thank you for the lovely comments about the cabin.

Hi nanny, Having the same situation here. I woke up to lots of Bluejays sreaming their heads off for almost 25 minutes so I knew something bad was going on.

I went out back for a little while but the only bird that would come around was a Chickadee; no other bird in sight.

This should give you a clue. The picture was taken of the inside of the first wooden thing on May 21, 2007. Seven eggs belonging to a pair of Black-capped Chickadees. They are bird houses made out of unfinished rough cut lumber.

Oh beautiful Gary!

So you have alot of Dee's around?

Hebron, KY

sadie mae,

Checked out the Petsmart store after I dropped DH off at the airport today and found the BOSS feeder (like I thought they had there). It was $20.99. It was around noon on a Sunday and closer than dealing with the traffic to go to Tractor Supply. I was afraid that if I didn't get it (and pay the higher price) and went to TS, that I would be outta luck today. I hope to swing over to TS Monday after I drop DH off at the airport (he's an Airline Captain) and see what they have in the wild bird dept.!

I put into the ground a post to hang the BOSS with, filled the feeder and hung it. After awhile, the birds started coming to it! :-)

Marilyn ~ I'm glad you were able to find one. The Chickadees, Titmouse(s) and Goldfinches have been all over mine.

Oh, that's wonderful Gary.

This feeder pic yesterday put a smile on my face. I've never seen a RBW in my backyard before.

Great shot Dave and congratulations on your first Red-bellied Woodpecker. Hope he keeps coming back to your backyard. They most frequently visit my suet feeder and I generally hear them coming in before I actually see them.

Hebron, KY

Dave,

Fantastic shot! RBW are one of our favorites! Besides suet cakes (woodpecker treat + peanut treat), peanuts in feeder, occasionally BOSS, they love the Jif extra crunchy pb I spread on an old farm post (that was left here at our property border when we built house)!

Us too, we usually hear them before we see them.

DH took this shot one early March day of the female RBW.

Congratulations Dave! Aren't they beautiful? I have them here and their one of my favorites!

Nice pics Marilyn!

Thanks all,

With the creation of this Forum, I guess my lifelong addiction to birds has now finally officially set in.

This is fair warning to any 'newbie' type viewers who might currently feel just casual about the matter.

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

Isn't that the truth, bird watching is now as addicting to me as gardening! I would have NEVER sat out in the cold, taking pictures and watching birds, before this forum was started!

Marlton, NJ

LOL, yes I was just outside sitting in a chair w/ winter coat, earmuffs, blanket over my legs but the wind is too strong and cold so I decided to come in. :-)

Central, KY(Zone 6b)

I learned to cheat last winter :-) My feeders are all in the flower beds and grass right next to our drive. I can sit in my Jeep, with the motor & heat running, window down and watch/photograph away, LOL. Of course, with the rising gas prices, I may have to just take my blankie out with me this winter!!

Oh lovely! ;-)

Hee. Kinda funny to watch though… sometimes like a ginormous hummingbird trying to grab the suet while in flight.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

When I first started to come on here I would check the BW forum once a week. Now I am on here several times a day most days checking it out!!

Brainerd, MN

I am so envious of all of you with good cameras! That RBW is breathtaking. I get enough pleasure out of taking pics of the birds to keep me going, but I would love to get some beautiful pics like yours!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Awww, I actually don't have that great of a camera. I DO happen to have a tree and feeders outside my window! Boy, if I had a decent zoom, I could REALLY get some great shots. I'm going to get my old SLR out though and take some actual film shots one of these days.

Wonderful feeder photos everyone! The onset of cold weather has thrown me into high gear bird feeder wise. Last year I had so much fun when I decided to drag my old changing table outside the dining room window and use it as a feeder/picture lure. Being made of wood, by the end of the winter the table had warped so much that it fell apart and I threw it away. But all summer I have been thinking about a plan to do the same thing using other materials. So I found this leaf bagging apparatus at Lowes and took the bag off. That left me with a metal stand. On top of the stand I wired on a screen insert I also found at Lowes. All the material is either metal or plastic so at least I won't have to worry about warping or mold. This is what it looks like from the outside. Not very attractive but the birds don't care lol!

There isn't a lot of sunlight time left today but the birds took to it right away. The silly branch I wired on to the screen looks kind of wimpy so I may try glueing something more substantial. One of the first to try it out was a goldfinch (of course)
