Mulch and Termites

Saint James, MO(Zone 6b)

Hi all. We are mulching for the cold weather and worried about getting the mulch too close to our foundation. Any ideas of how to keep the termites away, or any other ways of protection without the fear of termites? I have read that it is not necessarily the wood, but the moisture that draws the termites. We have somewhere around 300 bulbs, also several Canna seeds, that we have planted and would really be sick if they don't make the winter! I am so new at this, just started gardening last year, and decided on using mainly perennials this year, but not knowing a lot about gardening still, I need ALL the help I can get! So many people here know soooooooooo much and are so kind to share! Thanks for any assistance! Misty

Here are some past threads on the subject--some are in forums you won't have access to, but I think there are a couple in the beginner forums too.

Termites will get into mulch, so it's important not to put it right up against your foundation. I don't know about the moisture part, but given that it's going to be winter and snow has moisture in it, it's sort of a moot point since you'll have both moisture and wood present. I don't think there's much of a way to prevent them from getting into the mulch if there are termites in your area. If the mulch is just there during the winter though I don't know how active they are during that time of year, so you may not have as much to worry about as you would during other times of the year.

Thanks, you all are always so helpful! I have looked at everything I was allowed to view, and I find that Boric Acid is a very good deterrent. Last time I bought it was for roaches that seemed to find me from my lovely neighbors. :( This has been several years ago, but it was fairly cheap back then. I have left at least a foot from my foundation thus far, so I think I will use the one persons idea of ground cover behind. This should look really nice next year growing around all my tulips, daffodils, crocus, etc.... Thank you all so much for being so helpful! Always a pleasure! Misty
