We've moved into a new place and have enjoyed raspberries even up to today. When they are finished, do I cut them back? and if so, how far... to the ground or leave 6-12". I have no idea of what to do with them. Thanks for any help.
raspberry canes, now what?
MG, here it is recommended to cut only the canes that produced fruit this year. Those are usually brown-colored (first year canes are usually green and are the ones that will produce fruit next year).
It may be helpful to know what variety you have though. My black raspberries have nearly white canes so it is hard for me to determine first or second year canes by color alone.

thanks Shoe, I have canes that are green, and brown. Most are brown and produced fruit. Thanks for the information. I'll have a good look in the next few days when it stops raining.
MG
Great! And congrats on the rain! (We've been in a serious drought here all summer.) I bet you had some great berries this summer.
Happy Gardening!

when you cut away the old canes, that is the brown ones, you cut them down to about one inch from the ground, this allows all the energy to go into this years new growth and helps the fruiting to take place, it is also a good time to check for any disease, broken canes and you should tie the new canes to a frame so that they dont all get tangled into each other, it also helps with the picking of the fruit, some folks lay a mulch of straw along the rows to help keep the fruiting canes clean but I give mine a winter feed when I cut out the old canes and again early spring. You will need a frame about 6/8 feet high at the top. some seasons, you need to net the fruit to keep the birds off your berries. good luck. you can make wonderful jam or jelly at the end of the season. Good luck. WeeNel.
Wee Nel, I haven't checked this thread for a long time. Thanks for your suggestions. I have the brown canes mostly cut back and the rest are supported by stakes. I don't have to worry about the birds, the canes are under a huge cherry tree so the birds are usually to full to eat the raspberries!
Thanks for your help.
