Never works for me.....except for Hoya's...other plants I get fuzzy stuff....
October Bingo Calls
See that is what I read... It is so much you read then others say to do it this way... So funny to someone like me who does not know anything and I just say ok this way this week and next week this way...LOL
I am thinking I may be able to use the domes you sent me and use that instead of the bag... Tomorrows job...LOL
Susan
I only use the zip lok bags when I have seeds planted in a container. If I have a potted plant in a zip lok or plastic bag I try to use a stick or something in the middle to keep the plastic from touching the plant.
Here's a pic of a plastic container that I did an experiment with seeds sowed in straight vermiculite and then put the container in a plastic bag:
oooh, ooooh .... I am so excited! I am so glad I decided to post a picture of that container ... just decided to take it out of plastic so I could show Susan the container and ...... I have seedlings! WOO HOO! I am doing a happy dance here! These are seeds that I planted of Episcia 'Strawberry Patch' and I had no idea if they would germinate or not! I also planted at the other end seeds of Chirita 'Stardust' but nothing from them. I don't care .... I got seeds, I got seeds! Yipee! Wish me luck with these little babies!
I hope they are visible ... I cropped the photo to that side of the container.
Love your babies Lin, isn't it just the best thing ever when you see that bit of green poking up?? Whether its a leaf sending up a baby or the seeds sprouting it is just so exciting!!
~Brenda
I can see them Lin.. .I am doing the dance with you... It is just to cool when something grows... I never did allot of planting seeds until last spring... I was thrilled to see I could get some things to grow.... I to was doing the dance then...LOL
I think I planted the cuttings in to big of a pot.. I may take them out tomorrow and put in smaller container... The one is a geraimum(sp)? They had big heads or what ever you call them so I put several in a 8inch pot... Looks big but the cuttings are big... Will take a picture tomorrow as I am off to bed now...
Thanks for the pictures Lin... It made me think and boy when I do that watch out..LOL No I am going to put them into a plastic tray with a cover.. I mean put the dirt in the tray first then put them in there then they would not be to big...
Hugs,
Susan
Raingazer luv your cuttings!
Lin way to go!!! It sure does make you feel you can do anything when you see the little babies!
:) Donna
I have grown seeds from annuals and perrenials for many years, but I am new to Gessie seeds. I sowed some seeds a few months ago of Strep Daniel X Self that I got from Jannich ... I was so thrilled when they sprouted the little babies ... but then :( they died ... I can't remember if it was the time when I was out of town, but may have been. So, I am hoping that these babies grow and don't die on me!
Lin................how exciting is that????????????????? Just makes my day each time it happens.........................that is great.................
Wow! That 'Polo Polo' is amazing!
My 'Light Prince' is in a fish tank. So perhaps high humidity's the secret.
Oh those are all great. BSP and LP I think are so so pretty. I can tell you all the way I start things. It is a bit odd I guess. You know the 32 or 44 oz. cups you get at the service station with soft drinks in them? Well I put my cuttings in them with lot of perlite and a little seed starter on the bottom. I have never lost a cutting yet knock on wood.
Susan, yes technically, you don't want the leaves to touch the sides of the bags because it can cause them to rot. Plastic against the leaves can hold too much moisture on them and cause rot, but I take the tough love approach with most of my plants. They have to adapt and live in the best conditions I can give them. I do lose a few leaves from touching the sides, and I prevent them from touching if I can, but usually any that I lose are quickly replaced by new growth.
I really should buy stock in the ziploc company. Here's a picture of my stand. Ziploc bags sitting everywhere, and hanging from the sides of the shelf. LOL
Lin, those Episcia seedlings are such cuties! :o) I love growing from seeds! LOL
Been away all weekend and I get back and find I never had even one of the calls so far..lol..
Now I need to take time today and read over all the posta I missed .I really admire all of you that that are so good at propagating from seeds.I am still trying..Oh I do finally have some step seeds I sowed awhile back that I can see green showing now..lol..don't want to talk too much about it for fear next time I look they will all be dead : ( I have to agree that ziplock baggies are one of my best friends : )
Brenda I think you can use your red colander.
It should work very well. Well as good as mine did.
Are the calls going to be put at the top or are we going to need to look for them?

B I N G - O for FOUR LOL
Hope you are all having fun. Great pics. Got to run, been crazy for a few days. Will check back later! Have a GREAT DAY!
Brenda... you can use the red collander, only if you take a photo of yourself with it on!
;o)
Oh Rain thank you so much for the info on the zip loc's... I thought the whole plant would die if touching of leaves happened.... I don't care if a leaf or to kick the bucket... They have big tip/cuttings... I am going to take a picture of them to show and maybe one of you can tell me if I should put in a dome or keep in a pot... Thanks everyone for all the help I get.
Susan
I meant to tell you the one on the left doesn't look that bad because of the bag, it is in the bag because it looked that bad. LOL
Thanks that really helped and I am taking a picture of mine now to show you.... Also do you all use heat mats under your plants or just the lights? I also now see I jump the gun to fast and if it looks brown I either cut or pull and disgard... So BRB don't go away as I am taking a picture to send..
Susan
Hubby thinks I do an awful lot of freezing because I am ALWAYS picking up ANOTHER box of Ziplock freezer bags *lol* I have so many of them on my plant stand in the diningrroom *lol*
It was the day I was putting seeds in coffee filters and then in ziplock bags and then taping them to the windows in my bedroom. I wish you could have seen hubby's face. He's like you know Kim, you never cease to amaze me. It's always something new *lol*
The other day I picked up 5 plastic tubs and started burning holes in them. Hubby was like....what are you doing? I said "greenhouses" *lol* He's such a good sport. He even went out and bought me a 5 shelf plastic "plant stand" so that I would have more room for my lab experiments *lol*
I really don't have a plant "budget" yet but I'm working on it *lol*. He doesn't seem to mind me trading or sending postage as long as I "space it out" a little *lol* Isn't it SO MUCH fun?
I think the best part of it all is the friends that I met, the little knowledge I have gained and the continuing learning I get to do :) It's so nice to have people who share the same passion and addiction :)
Greenhouses:
Looking good Kim : ) What do you use to put those perfectly round holes in your lids?
Hubby has a small soldering iron in his "computer bag" and it works perfectly! I just plug it in and burn :) I use it so much he said I could just have it :)
So now my mind starts thinking what?.....you guessed it.....need more greenhouses *lol*
Wow I lost you all for awhile... I just emailed Rain to tell her not to laugh but Help I was lost and I can't get back...LOLOLOL
Ok here are a few pictures of my things... Lin, All your baby AV's are alive... YEAHHHH.... Also a picture of a wonderful Birthday present for a very nice person who did not have to do it but took the time to anyway :-) that would be our Ms. Nancy, they look so pretty I think ....
Ok on with the pictures...
Susan
I never remove or open the bags til I'm ready to start hardening them off to remove them from the bags. The point of the bag is to keep the humidity high and steady. I leave plants in them for weeks (or months, but I hate to admit that) without ever opening them.
Susan, first of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY 2 YOU!! Sorry I missed it if it was recently. Just really started "following" this forum faithfully recently :)
Second, your plants look FABULOUS! Those are SO pretty! GREAT Growing!
Third, what is the little pretty thing in the bottom right hand side of your first picture? The foliage is cute and the stem is a fantastic color :)
Very nice!
Kim,
It is a coleus that someone sent me... It is a scented one I believe... I am trying to grow with soil/soilless as normally I would stick in water.... I have two little ones doing really good so far... If she lives the winter remember as I will forget and I will send you some :-)
Oh my birthday was in July and I was shocked when I got this in the mail... She remembered I said I liked them when someone posted and she sent to me...LOL Silly girl.. .gotta love em...LOL
That was a hard month for me as my brother passed away and Lin and Nancy made it allot easier for me... They were there if I needed to chat...
Hugs,
Susan
Susan I think what you have is a Epiphyllum oxypetalum/Night blooming Cereus
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/20630/
Susan, I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I'm glad that you have wonderful friends.
Hugs, Donna
Susan, I'm SO sorry for the loss of your brother. I'm so glad the ladies were there for you :)
Your Night Blooming is called a Epiphyllum oxypetalum "Night Blooming Cereus". Mine hasn't bloomed yet but pictures of the blooms are FANTASIC! They only bloom one night though so you have to stay up VERY late the night it's going to bloom :)
Hope that helps.
Susan is it a night blooming cereus? I think they are also called orchid cactus.
Well life happens and I am still sad on some days but life must go on... He is in a much better place and out of all the pain he was in... It was a shame he was so young.. 56...
This cactus is going to get that big???? I have to read more about it because if it has to come in for winter I now have something else to trade...LOL
I have some hoyas also... I really think the varigated hindu rope is one of my fav's and also the dark green hindu rope... Next I believe is the sweetheart hoya... Lin/Nancy as I can't remember which one I sent it to. LOL Is it still alive? It liked being outside this year... Did get burnt the first week and I thought well Sue heres another to add to the list of dead... :-( She bounced right back and started growing...
I posted another picture above and I don't see it must have went south? :-) This is what Nancy got me for my birthday bought me for my birthday.... Thanks again girl... :-) It looks so pretty I think.
Rain thank you as I took off yesterday and the hubiscus suffered for it... They look good again today... So on they stay...
Hugs,
Susan
Hi Ya Susan: Glad to see you around the Garden! Looks like you are doing a great job with all your plants! I see you are getting the Gessie Addiction too!
Love that Coleus ... I have a couple that have been growing for the past few years since we haven't had any real cold weather in quite a few years to kill them.
You will love your Oxypetalum: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2443/
Mine has been blooming the past few weeks and I keep missing it cause the plant is sitting out in a corner of the backyard! I gotta take some cuttings to root in a hanging basket for inside the house so I will be able to see the thing in bloom sometime.
Susan I would luv to see a closer picture of the scented coleus:
