I've just spent the day chopping down and digging out the massive cluster of roots. But of course there are hundreds of other roots. How do I stop it from growing??? And will I be able to plant other flowers there??? I was hoping to put in a rose bed. Thank you
Kill Pampas Grass
I've heard two methods for removing pampas grass. The preferred method is to pour some kind of herbicide (a brush killer type) on the area and then tack down a piece of black plastic/heavy duty over top. When sunlight hits the plastic it should heat up the area to essentially cook the roots. The down side is, you have to wait a few weeks for the herbicide to leave the soil, depending on which one you use. The other method involves pouring gasoline on the stump and lighting it on fire! But you no longer have a stump so I guess that's out :)
Hopefully yours didn't bloom before you decided to dig it out. If it did, it will most likely reappear in the form of seedlings...which you should pull up ASAP ! The seeds from those plumes can travel miles and sprout anywhere.
How big was the clump you dug out?
It can be a real pain to eliminate, but you can do it if you're vigilant about digging up any new pieces you see sprout up.
Plantfreak is right about the brush killer and the tarp. That may be the best way for you to get rid of it completely.
How much blood did you lose tearing it out ? LOL
I have pampas grass - seems to not like freezing.
Roundup doesn't work that well on it?
Back in the 70's they planted it along freeways here...bad move...then it started popping up everywhere, and it even invades the wetlands.
Round Up would probably work better if he/she hadn't already removed the top ghrowth. Which reminds me, I know people who mix Roundup with other brush and weed killers and it seems to work very well...it may work on Pampas Grass.
