Do corns make sounds as they grow?

Bellevue, United States

"ears" of corns grow so quickly they make sounds as they grow...

I've once heard that corns make sounds as they grow & that this is why corns are counted as "ears" of corns.
The "sound" is supposed to come from tiny squeaky noise which kernel's skin makes as they grind against each other.

The effect is similar to wet finger sliding against bathroom mirror.

My son has heard "corn grow", it was before the ears were forming. I believe it's just the plants themselves. He and a friend sat in the middle of a big field in the wee hours of the morning. It was quiet the dew had settled on the plants, in my mind, that helps with the "noise". Nothing scientific, just a guess. I do know, that after a warm summer rain, it's amazing how fast it grows!

Corn is a jointed grass that grows by slipping its joints. On a hot humid July night after a rain, one can hear it slipping. But it has to be a period of rapid growth. Ears refers to its appearance, it sticks out from the main stalk like ears.

OH my Gosh, 7 Oaks, what an experience your son had, whatever he had to drink, can you get me some, only joking ofcourse, but how good would that be to sit in the still of the night, in a field, and hear things growing, I'd have been out of that field like a bullet, I have also heard folk say they heard that squeaking noise from corn as the husks swelled up and it parted the protective husk around it, but personally I though, Oh yeah, and did you also hear the Angel Gabriel sing, but there you go, others have heard it too, now I have to go grovel back to them and say sorry for being a doubter, best wishes, Weenel.

WeeNel, there's lots of advantages of living in a rural area. We don't farm, just have an acreage, but our kids and us, have gotten to see and experience a lot of things most people don't even think about! Driving to town to work is a bummer tho, with gas prices.

Hi again Sevenoaks, are we just so lucky, I live in the same situation as you, so I know what you mean about all the beauty, natural wonderment of mother nature and the peace and contentment that comes along with all that, our kids sure have a lot to be thankful about and as mine are all grown up now, they really do say how good a childhood they had, like trees to climb, butterflies to try identify, insects to try catch or chase away and home grown food that they found so boring till they left home and had to go to the stores to buy, Oh I think my halo just about got itself twisted, but seriously, I know what you mean about having to visit town, fortunately I only have to do that on selected occasions and believe me, I can drive quickly on the return journey home. Happy gardening to you and enjoy. WeeNel.

Just reading the title of this thread freaked me out. I had to click on it just to see what it was all about. Holy Smokes. I would have left skid marks getting out of that corn field. We're talking sonic boom here. I'm a country girl, and I never heard that one. Sounds like a good Halloween activity for us rural types, but alas, the corn has been harvested. Oh, well. I'll just have to stick to watching grass grow.
